MARJAYOUN, Lebanon - In escalating violence over capture of two of its soldiers Israeli warplanes attacked a Palestinian guerrilla base 10 miles south of Beirut, their closest raid yet to the Lebanese capital.

Lebanese security officials confirmed the strike. Hezbollah militants crossed into Israel on Wednesday and captured two Israeli soldiers. Israel responded in southern Lebanon with warplanes, tanks and gunboats, and said seven of its soldiers had been killed in the violence.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called the soldiers? capture ?an act of war,? and his Cabinet prepared to approve more military action in Lebanon ? a second front in the fight against Islamic militants by Israel, which already is waging an operation to free a captured soldier in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Israel began calling up reserve troops on Wednesday, signaling a large-scale campaign to retrieve the two soldiers, Israel?s Channel 10 television said. The report added that a reserve infantry division had been mobilized and was expected to be sent to Israel's northern border with Lebanon.

The Israeli army said three soldiers were killed in the initial Lebanon raid, and four others were killed when their tank went over a land mine in southern Lebanon.

Olmert said he held the Lebanese government responsible for the two soldiers? safety, vowing that the Israeli response ?will be restrained, but very, very, very painful.?

Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said he will not release the captives except as part of a prisoner swap. He said the two soldiers were ?in a safe and very far place.?

?No military operation will return them,? he told a news conference in Beirut. ?The prisoners will not be returned except through one way: indirect negotiations and a trade.?

Israeli jets struck deep into southern Lebanon, blasting bridges and Hezbollah positions and killing two civilians, the Lebanese officials said.

The Israeli military planned to call up thousands of reservists, and residents of Israeli towns on the border with Lebanon were ordered to seek cover in underground bomb shelters.

The Israeli stock market plunged on word that two more soldiers were captured and that Israel was getting entangled in a second front against Lebanese guerrillas. The exchange?s TA-25 blue chip index sank as much as 4.9 percent in exceptionally heavy trading. It rose slightly in afternoon trading to close down 4.2 percent.

The United States, U.N., European Union, France and Germany expressed deep concern about the fighting. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for the immediate release of kidnapped Israeli soldiers and condemned Israel?s retaliation in southern Lebanon.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Hezbollah action went against the interest of the Lebanese people, and that Syria has a ?special responsibility? to resolve the crisis.

?All sides must act with restraint to resolve this incident peacefully and to protect innocent life and civilian infrastructure,? she said ahead of meetings in Paris.

The White House, which also condemned the attacks, blamed Syria and Iran for the attacks.

?We call for immediate and unconditional release of the two soldiers,? said Frederick Jones, spokesman with the White House National Security Council. ?We also hold Syria and Iran, which directly support Hizbollah, responsible for this attack and for the ensuing violence.?

The Palestinian group Hamas welcomed on Wednesday the operation in which the Lebanese guerrilla movement Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers, saying it would help a campaign to free 1,000 Palestinians.

"This is a heroic operation carried out against military targets and so it is a legitimate operation, especially as it took place in occupied Lebanese territory," Hamas political bureau member Mohammad Nazzal told Reuters.

Let's see if these punks feel lucky..

I think it's time that they start killing the Leaders of these nations harbouring and fomenting terrorism.

Also the US should put these scumbag Saudi Emirs on notice instaed of playing suck phuck games with them.
A couple of these extorting SAUDI EMIRS gets a bullet in the head and the oil prices will drop.

US troops should temporarily pull out and leave the Saudis naked.

Iran got just what it wanted. Now at the G 8 tomorrow they can talk bout this instead of Iran and it's nukes. N Korea might only come in 3rd. Syria must be happy they got out of Lebanon. Now they can say not us involved. It does sound like Iran has filled that void.

Why do you think that? I've never understood America's undying loyalty to this country. A ton of our problems in the middle east come out of our alignment with Israel. I just don't see how it's worth it (and don't you f*cking dare call me anti-semetic because I think this... it has nothing to do with religion... it just makes no sense to me).

the u.s. allegience goes back to world war 2 & the holocaust.

nobody wanted to take the survivors of the concentration camps into their country so great britain dumped them into the desert.

you should check out the movie "exodus" to get an idea.

israel is the only democracy in the middle east & is surrounded by countries who want to "drive them into the sea" them & if the u.s. weren't involved the situation would be much worse.

of course it's much more involved than that but don't feel like getting into it.

Israel attacks Beirut's airport

Israeli aircraft have fired rockets at the runways of Beirut's international airport, forcing its closure and the diversion of flights.
The attack comes as 27 civilians were killed in overnight Israeli raids on southern Lebanon.

Militant group Hezbollah says it has fired rockets into northern Israel. One person has been reported killed.

The violence follows the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. Israel has said it holds Lebanon responsible.

The Beirut airport is Lebanon's only international airport.

It is located in the Lebanese capital's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs.

'Weapons hub'

The Israeli military confirmed that its aircraft had struck the facility.

"The airport is used as a central hub for the transfer of weapons and supplies to the Hezbollah terrorist organisation," an Israeli army spokesman said.

Shortly after Israeli shells began falling on the runways, a senior airport official announced the facility was closed and asked scheduled flights to divert to Cyprus.

There were no immediate reports of casualties at the airport.

Bridges destroyed

Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said the soldiers' capture was an "act of war", but Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah insisted the two would only be returned via talks.

What is Hezbollah?
Capture marks escalation

Mr Olmert said he held Beirut responsible, but Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora denied any knowledge of the Hezbollah operation and refused to take responsibility for the soldiers' capture.

Before targeting the airport, Israel launched night air strikes on bridges and roads in southern Lebanon. Many bridges were destroyed.

The BBC's Kim Ghattas in Beirut says it is the first time in a decade that Beirut airport had been hit by Israeli fire.

The airport, rebuilt after the civil war, is a symbol of national pride for the people of Lebanon, our correspondent adds.

I understand most of it from that perspective and I know the historical ties, but I've just never understood what the US stands to gain by being such a strong ally of a country that, by being an ally of it, makes the US a favorite target of terrorists.

i guess you have to start with the premise of the thread......which is utterly wrong...as usual....

msnbc?......of course...

tha facts...israel cedes gaza to the palestinians....and it immediately became a launching base for attacks against israel’s civilians and military....and the kidnapping of soldiers...

hezbollah intensifies its attacks from lebanon and israel now has to amass its forces for yet another war....

read up on what started this latest conflagration...

GW,

WTF does MSNBC have to do with anything? As jaberwocky asked, what do you find wrong or biased in the article?

How is the 'premise' of the thread wrong? There is no premise. It's just a cut and paste of an article.

I didn't make any commentary and the thread title is a plain fact. I support the attack.

How about this- 'Israel attacks Lebanon in retaliation for the kidnapping of two soldiers.' Jesus.

thank you ,k.... ;)

it`s very sad.....that after the gaza give back and the lebanon pull out that lebanon has lost control of the south, which is essentiailly a hizbollah state....

hizbollah is really integrated into the government of lebanon....and hizbollah has been integrated into the infrastructure of lebanon.....

like al qaeda was integrated into the infrastructure of taliban-ruled afghanistan....

it`s really heartbreaking to think of the hell lebanon has unleashed upon themselves.....

if there was ever any point to the u.n.,as useless as it is, it would be to fix things like this....

a state beleaguered by terrorists ought to be able to call on the world body to come to its aid...

as it is, israel again will have to deal with it.....

Well...yeah. But what does the US get out of it? I'm not even saying they DON'T get anything... I just don't know how it benefits the US. People mention that Israel is the only democracy in the middle east, but in reality, what difference does that make?

I'm just trying to understand it, that's all.

Well I do wish they had held off bombing Lebanon's airport. Why? We have Americans that want out and cant get out. Sounds like we will have to bring in helicopters from Europe by way of Cyprus. Some more expenses for American people. Everyone shocked rockets from inside Lebanon landing in Israel. Lebanon condemned at once. What the hell do we expect. You shoot at me I shoot back. It's typical of what happens in this region. They f???ing hate each other.
