Some truth in this djv. We must spread democracy in the ME, or there is no solution in sight. Democracy, education, capitalism, free and open markets.

We did this in Asia, South/Central America...we must now do this is the ME.

If I may play Devil's Advocate for a second (and no, not the pinball machine ;))

Imagine for one minute you live in Southern San Diego, right down near the border....The Mexican government actually shows a bit of initive and says, "You know what, we're sick of our citizens leaving our country...we're going to build a bloody big wall to keep them all in!....What's that? The plans for the wall go right through where you live?...Yes, that's right. Yuo've got 3 months to get out before we come and bulldoze down your house!...Compensation? hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!"

Not a great situation to be in, I wouldn't have thought!

I think the Northen Ireland comparison was a good one....Surely now the violence has gotten to a point where it's nearly irrelevant?
What I mean is it's all retaliation for retaliation, for retaliation.....
...A Palistinian bombs a bus, Israel sends in the gun ships, Palistine bombs a soldier station, Israel aciidentally shoots a child in a street shoot-out, Palistine bomb something else....etc...etc...etc.....

...I would have thought it has gotten well beyond the point of the leaders playing tit-for-tat...eye for an eye and all that.

Like I said earlier, Arafat's successor has just won a free election, based on a campaign of denouncing violence...This MUST be a good thing......But, just yesterday, some idiot militant group bombed something else, and Israel have officially cut ties and refuse to even recognise the new leader!!
Look, I understand that it has to be annoying seeing your citizens blown to pieces...but it happens both ways, and when you have the majority of people electing a man*** preaching diplomacy over violence, you MUST take advantage and use it to nut something out, surely!!!...Not just say, "fcuk you pal!! We'll do what we want, live with it!"

*** Who got a higher % of the vote than our mate Georgey, who seems to think 52% gives him a clear mandate!

You're always welcome down here in Tassie, smurfy....you might want to bring you're sun screen tho, we're a bit closer than you guys to the hole in the ozone layer that Angry God has thrown at us ;)

"the bunker"
the only problem is that...

1)i doubt that the new palestinian leadership is behind the continued terrorist attacks on israel.....or that they have the wherewithal to control the radicals...

2)if i were living in israel and the only way to stop these bombers from having access was to build a wall to protect my family,i`d say "build the wall and do it quickly"....if the wall stops the terrorists, there will be no need for retribution from israel...therefore slowing down the cycle of violence...

3)if the new palestinian leadership strongly advocates peace and moves to settle the dispute,my guess is that they will soon be with allah .....much like the last arab leader that was a strong advocate for an amicable peace and a settlement of the dispute.... anwar sadat...

and on a side note....as i totally disagree with "i love wr" on almost every issue....and don`t appreciate his "bomb-throwing" style of discourse,i was probably way over the line with some of my comments made earlier in this thread...he has every right to say what he feels...i shouldn`t have gotten my panties in a bunch....

apologies...

I hear what you're saying, gw....But as usual a small % of radical idiots ruin it for the vast majority of the population.

Fine...but what if you were one of the majority of Palistinians who want to live peacefully and get on with their lives, but are forced to go through security check after security check just to get to (and from) work every day?

It just sems weird to me that Israel (as a state) effectively treat the West Bank as a seperate country (ie. passport checks etc. to get into the Jewish quarter....building a wall to seperate them out ffs!), but flat out refuse to even consider the recognision of a 'new' Palistine.

Anyway.....

NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE.

WHEN I START SAYING ISRAEL AMD THE US ARE ANGELS AND DONT DESERVE WHAT THEY'VE RECEIVED IN RETURN THEN I WILL RESPECT INSULTS.

I LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD. I DONT WAKE UP AND THINK THE WORLD IS DISNEYWORLD. I ALSO DONT FORGET HISTORY EITHER. ISRAEL IS GETTING WHAT THEY DESERVE FOR STEALING PAL LAND AND KILLING CIVILIANS. SHAME ON THEM.

AND SHAME ON ANYONE FOR STICKING UP FOR THEM.

Fine...but what if you were one of the majority of Palistinians who want to live peacefully

CHRISTO- ALL PALESTINIANS WANT ISRAEL DESTROYED. DONT BE FOOLED. SOME ARE JUST TOO SCARED TO GET INVOLVED. AND I DONT BLAME THEM. IF THE US WASNT IN ISRAELS CORNER THEY WOULDNT LAST 10 MINUTES.

I don't believe that's true at all.

All Palestinians want the creation and recognition of their own country above anything else...there's a huge difference.

The day Palestine becomes someone practical and equitable will be the day there is hope in that region. Time and time again, they reject very fair proposals that give them a homeland.

Both sides have strong arguments for the territory. They both must be able to live side by side and make compromises. Really - only Israel has shown that capability so far.

Palestine never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Maybe with Arafat gone, things can get better.

The whole middle eastern region wants Israel and the Zionsts destroyed, they are the largest terrorist organization in the history of the region. There hasn't been nor will there be peace. Once a Jew sits on something, it's his and he won't give it up. It's been going before we were born and be going long after we're dead.

come on fellow murphy, you know that doesn't make sense. it's the kind of rhetoric that only fuels the flames of violence.

if you look at the proposals in the last 30 or so years, they always involve jewish compromise, are always rejected by palestine, and then the violent cycle continues.

both sides have historic arguments for living there, neither side should be wiped out. israel is further along in the ability to be diplomatic at this point. hopefully palestine can catch up. they need to be pragmatic. they want it all with the "zionists" destroyed - but that is not fair or realistic.

100% valid SM. Anyone with a British, Canadian, Irish or Australian grandfather probably served or knew someone who did in the early part of the 20th century in Palestine when Great Britain was on a colonial mission. It was futile then as it is now. Hate to admit it but my life won't be affected if the whole region turns to dust. It's just upseting to read well intentioned babble and more that I'm even responding. That being said, "Better bad opinion than none"

But if you go back far enough, the Jews were there first anyway. I guess if you draw the line at 1900, then yeah - the Jews don't belong there.

Where do the Jews go then? Seeing as how many of them have multiple generations there, where do you reckon they should be moved to this time?

Pragamatism, middle ground, realistic ideas have all been proposed and have all been rejected by Palestine. That is not Israel's fault.

Hate to admit it but my life won't be affected if the whole region turns to dust.
Then why do you have an opinion about it at all either way?

Palestinian Group Ready to End Violence

1 hour, 42 minutes ago Top Stories - AP

By LARA SUKHTIAN, Associated Press Writer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A local group of Palestinian militants announced Saturday it is ready to stop violence, a sign that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas appears to be making some progress in persuading armed factions to halt attacks on Israel.

The announcement by gunmen from the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a group with ties to Abbas' ruling Fatah (news - web sites) movement, came a day after some 3,000 Palestinian policemen were deployed in the northern Gaza Strip (news - web sites) to halt rocket fire on Israeli communities

any picaninny comments?.......how about some enlightened commentary on "the spics"....

or is your angst only directed at "the jews"?

dan is reincarnated from some gestapo officer circa 1940`s nazi germany.....

you are a pretty blatantly racist guy,dan....

it`s your kind of mindset that has resulted in mass genocide throughout history....

of course, you have the right to say what you feel....
just that it`s pretty pathetic.....

and it`s scary that nobody calls you on it...

"the jews" are always fair game....

and it`s publicly acceptable....history repeating itself....

"the gathering storm"(in this case radical fundamentalism).....europe hiding their heads in the sand,enabling........"the jews" and/or israel is the boogeyman....

and the u.s. will probably have to step in and do the dirty work...

some things never change..

It's difficult dealing with professional posters so I won't try. I also won't say anything stupid. All Germans during WW2 were not racist. Most of them believed that they were doing the right thing as you do today. They believed that the Jew was the enemy with all their propagandized hearts as you do today in Iraq. The Israeli government ripped off the substantial Holocaust victims of their material wealth. The average German, unlike you did not know their military was committing War crimes but justfied it when it was uncovered, as you. Racist, pathetic, maybe, no more, no less than you. Once you believe that you matter and are are more than fodder for your or any government, oh well

no quarrel with the germans....just the nazis.....no trouble with the iraqi`s...just the sunni power base and saddam that oppressed and basically slaughtered the majority for a few decades...

and i don`t know enough to make a judgement on whether removing saddam was right or wrong....let history be the judge...personally,i `m glad he`s gone...just don`t know if the price of american lives was worth it...or whether removing him may have averted a future catatrophe.....we`ll probably never know...

do know that the hated israelis did the right thing by taking out his nuclear reactor in the early "80`s"...did the world a favor...

they may have to do it again...with the iranian reactor....

i`m not jewish...not even a proponent of israel,actually...just see a scenario coming into shape that is very reminiscent of pre ww2 europe...and it`s disturbing...

im sure you`d love for iran to go hot....just think of the potential for calamity that would represent....

might even provide hope for the annihilation of israel...

see, maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel,dan...

maybe if iran lobs bombs into israel, they might be nukes instead of the poorly guided scuds that saddam hit them with....

of course, then, israel would be forced to respond in kind.....they wouldn`t be able to ignore such an attack..this time...

or maybe iran, with nuclear weapons could just choke off the straits of hormuz....controlling the world`s access to middle eastern oil....

80% of the persian giulf`s oil flows through the straits....

hard to imagine a nuclear armed radical fundamentalist government with a stranglehold on the world`s economy...

ww3?....could happen....

i don`t hate muslims...or middle easterners...they are fine people....every bit as fine as we mongrel americans.....

i see egypt and jordan and other countries co-existing with the west....thriving.....

i absolutely thought the greatest leader in my lifetime was anwar sadat....maybe the bravest man of the 20th century...right up there.....he dared to fight for peace...and died for it...

but i don`t advocate the destruction of an entire country...and entire nationality of people...as it seems yourself and some extremists seem to....

i don`t have the much hate in me...

i just don`t think the prevailing climate in the middle east is conducive to nuclear proliferation.....

but thats me...

we can agree to disagree...`
