Here in town they gave official honor to a sportsbettor!
It was the martini-swilling, ex mob-lawyer mayor who got it done. Mayor Oscar will be term-limited out of office in 2011. But Oscar did get a neon installation in his
honor on Fremont Street. See pic below.
from John L Smith's column in the Las Vegas Review-Journal (Nov. 30, 2007):
BANKER'S HOLIDAY: In squarer, less colorful cities, the notion of the mayor and council honoring a lifelong sports bettor and handicapper would be a front-page scandal. But this is Las Vegas, and the Runyonesque character in question is none other than my man Lem Banker.
Lem is a walking encyclopedia of the history of sports betting, and his hyping of Las Vegas is perhaps second only to the efforts of Mayor Oscar Goodman. So on Saturday, it will be Lem Banker Day in Las Vegas.
The honor was made possible through the efforts of radio show host Larry Grossman.
I hear Lem also provided a certain sports-betting mayor with several winners.
