[rant]It's THAT time of year. You know, when every reporter who covers college football is compelled to tell us that so-and-so team "controls their own destiny."

Doesn't the word, by its very definition, mean that it cannot be controlled? Destiny has to do with the fixed, predetermined and unchangable nature of future events. If it exists, it cannot be controlled, even by tough wins on the road against conference opponents.

I also hate it when someone says that something is "very unique." Unique means it is one of a kind. It can't be very one of a kind. It is either one of a kind or it isn't.

I have two new annoying phrases that seem to be all the rage with sports interviewees this year. First, a statement no one can argue with. "It is what it is." Of course it is. This meaningless sentence ranks up there with a coach's assurance that other team is "very well coached."

Second, the sentence that begins with "at the end of the day," has become trite. I haven't heard anyone say "At the end of the day I like a warm shower and a BJ." Instead, the end of the sentence is always something that doesn't have anything to do with nighttime rituals.
