I am completely ignorant when it comes to how these sites work so I need an explanation.

When a site grows, such as this one is doing, what does it take to keep up with the growth and user activity so that performance stays the same? Does it require hardware, software, bandwith (hear this all the time but don't know what it means)?

By the way, congrats on your success.

it requires hardware (the server), software (site and forum) and bandwidth is charged per usage. when we started bandwidth was almost free but now we use in excess of 250 gigs per month and it's quite expensive.

When you say bandwith is "charged per usage", what does that mean?

that image above is 6058 bytes

when somebody opens a page, they add up all the bytes that were downloaded on that page and that's the bandwidth used.

so many bytes = so many megabytes = so many gigabytes = total bandwidth used.

something like that. hard to explain for a computer illerate like me :)

So if we stopped using avatars, it'd be a lot cheaper to run the site? Heck, anything to help out the cause.

Or ad-blocking software for that matter! If we didn't load all those ads we could save you a ton of $$. Oh...wait a second....
