let me correct something here: the fan did not reach out for the ball, it was over the wall in his area. Doesn't mean he shouldn't have backed off, but he clearly was not in the field of play.

It's one thing to say what the "proper" thing to do here was, but when you're looking up at the ball, all you see is ball, not other idiots, including Alou, around you.

If cubs fans want to blame anyone, blame Alex S. Gonzalez for his first error in over 2 months. Blame Prior for getting too rattled to make the "right" pitch. Blame the cubs for not taking game 1 when they had the chance.

Yes, it sucks and might even be the curse, but the guy doesn't need the crap that has been brought upon him. To me that's looking for someone to point the finger at. IMHO, cubs choked vs a scrappy fish team. And should the cubs win game 7, or lose for that matter, wrigely and the cubs and FOX should give the fan a % of money made on tonights game. How you like them apples?

the media turned this guy into a billy B. but did he cost them the game? this wasnt the 9th inning with 2 out they still went on to make errors and give up hits. this kid is going to turn into a new curse for chitown called the "curse of the scapegoat!" blame the players for sleeping in the 8th inning! but if cubs dont pull through tonight he should relocate to iowa and room with buckner.

This guy has a little more riding on Game 7 than the typical fan. If they win, no big deal and he will quickly be forgotten, if they lose he will live in infamy. If it was a 12 year old kid I would feel really bad, but its a 26 year old grown man, college educated who has been around baseball seemingly his whole life.

Associated Press
A Chicago Cubs fan who last night reached out and deflected a foul ball that seemed destined for Moises Alou's glove is apologizing for his actions.

Steve Bartman issued a statement today saying he is truly sorry from the bottom of his broken heart. He says he had his eyes glued on the approaching ball the entire time and did not see that Alou had a play.

Bartman says had he known the ball was playable, he would have gotten out of the way.

Bartman angered his fellow Cubs fans when he deflected the ball just as Alou appeared to be about to catch it. The Cubs had a meltdown afterwards, and the Florida Marlins won the Game Six of the National League Championship.

Security guards had to escort him out of Wrigley Field after he was threatened and pelted with debris by other fans.

The Associated Press had been holding off on naming the man for fear of his safety.

However you look at it.....

This guys life is ruined if he stays where he's at. I was hoping the media didnt get ahold of his name....cause there will be very few people in Illinois that ever forget it. I feel terrible for the guy.

Then why the hell did they release his name, wish his email, with where he worked. That is just fukkin rediculous, they just destroyed this guys life and employment. The press should have to pay heavily for destroying a person like that. His life is over in chicago.:nono: :nono: :nono:

Moises alou should donate a trip or some money to help him pay for his shrink he is going to have for the rest of his life becuase that kids life is ruined (unfortunately) and Moises Alou is damn sure not deserving of $9,000,000 a year!!! He hit .279 and only had like 20 home runs this year. Randall Simon hit better than Alou did this year and he only makes 1.4 million. Cubs need to get rid of Alou or get him to take a pay cut. I hope that kid can somehow over time, put this behind and try to live a normal life. Thats criminal that people are putting his phone number and address on the internet!! I bet he hasnt slept a wink since that happened. Good Lord do I feel sorry for him!! I hope I dont hear another word about that kid on tv, in the newspaper or on the internet. The media better just leave that kid alone and let him try and be a normal kid.

After it was posted by other news organizations and was on various web sites, I guess they figured it was already released and known. A discussion on journalistic ethics goes beyond the scope of this board, but I understand the concern. In todays internet age, names of people that find themselves suddenly invovled in news, invariably become known in a matter of minutes...whether it is fair or not. Part of our advancement... in the past it was much easier for people to remain annonymous
