FOUR DOWNS

1ST DOWN

SHORT-YARDAGE SUCCESS

For all the justified talk about the Jaguars? woeful third-down work last week at Philadelphia (2-for-14), the offense?s shoddy performance on early and advantageous down-and-distances should be noted. The Jaguars failed to convert on a second-and-3, first-and-5 (twice) and second-and-2 (twice) in addition to striking out on two third-and-1 chances. And these were all run plays. No offense can establish a rhythm or gain confidence if they?re stopped in these types of situations.

2ND DOWN

LIMITING THE BIG PLAYS

The Redskins have potent playmakers all over the field: QB Robert Griffin III, RB Alfred Morris (right) and WRs DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Andre Roberts. The Redskins had three rushes of 10 or more yards last week and two passes of at least 20 yards. The Jaguars? defense needs to be on their toes to prevent the explosive plays that doomed them against the Eagles (six of at least 25 yards, including three of at least 45). The Redskins posted 161 yards after the catch last week so tackling is crucial.

3RD DOWN

CONTINUE TURNOVER TREND

We said it last week and the theme will carry into Week 2. The Jaguars were plus-4 in the preseason (fourth in the NFL) and had three takeaways (all in the first half) against the Eagles, which was tied for second-most last week. The Redskins had two red zone giveaways in their loss to Houston and 34 turnovers last year (minus-8 ratio). The right side of the Redskins? offensive line (tackle Tyler Polumbus and guard Chris Chester) could provide the Jaguars? pass rushers with some sack-forced fumble chances.

4TH DOWN

CHALLENGE THE SAFETIES

Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne should emphasize the middle of the field against a Redskins defense that has issues at safety. Free safety Ryan Clark doesn?t have the same range he did when playing for Pittsburgh and it?s a guess who will play strong safety, Bacarri Rambo (overmatched last week) or James Ihenacho (claimed off waivers Aug. 31 from Denver). Henne was 10-of-11 in middle throws for 124 yards and two touchdowns last week. Only one of those passes, though, traveled more than 16 yards downfield.
