Day One - Friday 4/23

- Walter "Wolfman" Washington / Russell Batiste Jr / Joe Krown

- Jon Cleary

- Dr John

- caught the end of George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic

- Steel Pulse to close it down

Rained all day which kept the crowds thin and ensured that all that braved the rains knew how to have a good time - Dr John absolutely killed it and Steel Pulse was awesome - finished off the day with a great dinner and a bunch of good wine

On the way back out today in a bit - going to concentrate a little more on Vodka today and a little less on beer :SIB

Well, the Charlotte ML didn't work out on Saturday but most everything else did

Day 2 - Sat 4/24

- Bonerama

- Papa Grows Funk

- The funky Meters

- The Midnite Disturbers Brass Band

Crapped out a bit early today and passed on Simon and Garfunkel who were closing down main stage (heard the show wasn't that great and that AG was sick and could barely sing) - that being said got to hear some great stuff all day long - PGF was incredible as always, guitarist June Yamagishi is very highly regarded both locally and in Japan and some early bad weather led to a great viewing locale - after that had to switch stages to see the Meters, and needless to say the show was worth the walk over to see it - the Midnite Disturbers are a large group of NO's who's who of young brass and percussion performers, and they blew it up - story on them from Offbeat magazine:

______________________________________
The idea for the Midnite Disturbers came at drummer Stanton Moore?s kitchen table. He and fellow drummer Kevin O?Day had been tossing around the idea of forming an all-star brass band, and they had called Troy ?Trombone Shorty? Andrews to see what he thought. When he agreed, they started calling friends and ended up with a lineup including saxophonists Ben Ellman and Skerik, trombonists Big Sam Williams and Mark Mullins, trumpeters Troy Andrews, Jamelle Williams and Shamarr Allen, and sousaphonists Matt Perrine and Kirk Joseph. The band has a hard, funky, in-your face sound with an enthusiastic, throwdown party attitude. Moore explains that this comes from the fact that ?everybody is a leader. Anybody can take over at any point and say, ?I got it.? There?re a lot of big personalities, but we?re all capable so nobody is really sweating.?

The Midnight Disturbers are also known for their distinct uniforms: black T-shirts with red letters that say ?Listen to?? and then the name of a New Orleans musician. ?We came up with that after seeing shirts that say ?Listen to Bob Marley? or ?Listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd,?? Moore says. ?We thought it would be cool if everybody had a shirt that says to listen to a particular New Orleans hero on the instrument that they are playing. We called around and asked everybody who they wanted. Tuba Fats had just died, so Matt Perrine said, ?Tuba Fats.? For me, I love James Black and felt that James Black could use some shouting out. Some guys have some more obscure ones, and some have some more well known ones. I think either Shorty or Shamarr has ?Listen to Louis Armstrong.? It?s traditional for a brass band to have a uniform, but we wanted to do something different.?

The name of the band also comes from a musician who embodied the tradition. ?Grand Marshall Henry Griffn had been spouting the name ?Midnite Disturbers? for a while as a great name for a brass band,? Moore says. ?He got it from a story by Danny Barker. They were some musicians who would go out at night and knock on people?s doors. They?d open the door, and the musicians would be playing, and they?d ask for money. They called them the Midnite Disturbers. That?s coming from Danny Barker, and you can?t get more traditional than that.?

Hung around outside the fest for a bit after the Disturbers show and them finished it all off with some dinner and a few margaritas - after all Sunday was another day, and the ABB was looming......................

Despite being a bit tired Sunday morning I knew the good weather forecast would bring a lot of extra fest-goers so decided to go out early and get a good spot at the main stage (the Acura Stage) as the line-up was good there all day - a lot of people go to the fest and no matter what's playing they set up at the Acura Stage all day so it has a tendency to get a bit crowded - surprisingly though yesterday wasn't too crowded at all

Day 3 - Sunday 4/25

- Tab Benoit and Louisiana Leroux

- Voice of the Wetlands All-stars

- The Levon Helm Band

- The Allman Brothers Band

Tab Benoit is another very highly regarded blues guitarist and musician from Louisiana, and we got a double shot of him on Sunday as he founded the V's of the WAS after hurricane Katrina to help promote awareness of coastal wetlands preservation

Musicians that played the show yesterday included:

Dr John, Tab Benoit, Anders Osborne, Cyril Neville, Waylon Thibideaux, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Vidacovich, Stanton Moore, Allen Toussaint, George Porter Jr, and it's possible/probable that I am missing more

If you are any kind of fan of NO music then that lineup should offer insight into the kind of show we were treated to yesterday

The Levon Helm Band was good too, with sit-ins from Ivan Neville and Dr John for "Such a Night" - nice mix of the LHB's new stuff and old standards from "The Band"

Then it was time for a 2 hour set by the Allman Brothers, and by the time the show was half-over it was clear that the show was going to be the musical highlight of the weekend (of which there were many contenders) - had been through a bunch of beer by that point but was lucid enough to know that the show started off with a couple of songs from "Beginnings" and ended with "One Way Out" for the encore - and in between it was a hit parade and a heavyweight matchup on guitar between Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks - Duane Allman was just about as good as I've ever heard him play/sing, and the band was super-tight and delivered an incredible set - was nice b/c the last time they played the fest it was at a different stage, it was extremely crowded that day and fest organizers did a good job of recognizing and adjusting to the situation

All in all a great day to cap off an incredible weekend of music - now I have to figure out a way to get myself into work for a few days as it all starts up again on Thursday with Kirk Joseph's Backyard Groove (KJ of Dirty Dozen Brass band fame) followed on the same stage by Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Govt Mule and WSP - will be back next week

Until then, I am

no matter what anyone ever tells you, it is not a good idea to mix beer, jack daniels and tequila...........

Day 4 - Thursday 4/29

was a bit late getting out there due to work (not sure why any businesses are open during JF) so missed Kirk Joseph and the Backyard Groove, but the musical bounty was still plentiful

- Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3h_WVg7XGag

- Govt Mule

- Widespread Panic

great day that ended up the wrong way with the 2nd instillation of margaritas - luckily bumped into a friend walking out of Santa Fe Restaurant and got a ride home b/c it was not going to be pretty trying to ride the bike i had taken to the fest

Thursday of JF, known as "locals Thursday", is always a great day as crowds are sparse, and yesterday was no different - now it's time to put it all together and do it again

again you can check out a good bit of live action here:
