Gov. Bush quietly approached to become next NFL commissioner

By Linda Kleindienst And Sarah Talalay
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

TALLAHASSEE -- Could Gov. Jeb Bush's future be in football instead of politics?

While U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has publicly flirted with the idea of becoming the next commissioner of the National Football League, Bush has been privately approached to gauge his interest in the job.

Bush, who spends his Sundays each fall watching pro football, acknowledged Tuesday that the NFL job was broached during a recent meeting with Patrick Rooney Sr., owner of the Palm Beach Kennel Club.

Rooney is the brother of Dan Rooney, who owns the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and co-chairs the NFL's search committee looking for a replacement for Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

"I met with Mr. Rooney and I said I'm doing my job until I'm finished and then I'm going to consider other things. But I'm not going to do anything until I finish," Bush, who leaves office in January, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Although he has repeatedly said he will not seek the presidency in 2008, Bush has declined to say what he does hope to do other than return to Miami.

Asked of his interest should the League hold the job open until he's ready, Bush replied, "They're not gonna do that. They're not gonna do that."

Patrick Rooney Sr. did not return calls and was out of the country Tuesday.

Tagliabue, who has been commissioner since 1989, announced in March his decision to retire.

Although he originally set a July 31 deadline to be out of the job, he has indicated his willingness to stay on longer.

Names that have surfaced for the position include Rice, league Chief Operating Officer Roger Goodell and Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay.

A fascination with professional sports teams runs in the Bush family. While Jeb Bush had a financial interest in the fledgling Jacksonville Jaguars NFL club, his brother, George W. Bush, assembled a group of partners that purchased Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers in 1989.

NFL owners met in Denver and received an update on the search process Tuesday. No names were mentioned.

Executive search firm Korn/Ferry International is interviewing owners to determine what type of commissioner each is seeking. A Korn/Ferry spokesman declined comment.

Clown Dennis Miller made it to the broadcast booth. Might as well have another clown make it to the commissioners office.

The outcome follows the trend.

Gov. Bush, tired of job suggestions, says no to NFL query

By ANDREA FANTA, Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Jeb Bush is getting tired of people trying to plan his life after he leaves office in January.

First, his brother, the president, hinted Bush should consider his own run for the Oval Office in 2008.

And now comes the National Football League, which had an emissary gauge his interest in replacing commissioner Paul Tagliabue, who is retiring in July.

To both, Bush's response was thanks, but no.

"I'm flattered," Bush said Wednesday of the NFL's interest, "but I'm governor of the state of Florida and I intend to be governor until I leave -- which is January 2007. And I'm not going to consider any other options other than being governor until I finish."'

He doesn't believe NFL officials will hold the position open until then.

No matter the buzz -- including whispers about a run for U.S. Senate and the GOP's vice presidential nomination in 2008 -- Bush says he's focused on simply finishing his second term.

"I swore to uphold the laws of this state and I interpreted that a little broader, perhaps, to mean also that I was going to work 24-7, that I was going to finish strong," Bush said. "And so a day doesn't go by where someone doesn't have a great idea for what my life looks like in 2007 and beyond and I'm not entertaining any discussion about it."

No, I live in Florida, believe me, it is genetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He just finished an investigation yesterday on a Republican councilman here in Orange county (Orlando), and everybody in the county knew he was busted. It was all over the news and they had minutes form the meetings and eye witnesses. But Jeb declared yesterday that he did absolutely nothing wrong, case closed!

And yes, it was Katherine Harris and Jebby who fixed the election down here the first time the dumbass stole the election.

Another ignorant conclusion.

It was the other way around, Florida democrats and the DNC tried to steal the election and didn't get away with it. Do a little reading and find out how the whole chad thing started.

Bunch of left wing morons.

But Bubba got a b j

But Bubba got a b j

Please GOD,

Let him become NFL COMMISIONER. Because some people in this country who are in love with Bush will look for him to be President.

How does it feel when you are fueling up.

Keep carrying your pathetic torch for the Bush's.

Denial is the mutha. :142smilie

Oh my GOD there are still people trying to defend this guy.

How fast we forget this is the same guy :

That wanted to derail Social security........
That wanted to turn our ports over to his Arab butt Buddies........
That wanted to change labor laws and deny people overtime pay.......
That reasoned why we went to war and changed so many times.........
That left people stranded for days in the south without food, water , medicine or even just plain help. How pathetic that was.

Next---you may be paying to see the NFL, not that that matters, that truly pales by comparison to dead soldiers. JEB will do all the dirty work that the owners want. Networks will be mercilessly crushed. Fans will be fleeced big time.

Is it 29 % now ? :142smilie :mj07: :sadwave:

BUT BUBBA GOT A B J

wah wah wah Bubba got a B J ..wah wah wah.. :mj07:

would that group be French left-wingers?

I don't think he is aware of his spelling error...but then again, the president he supports is less literate than Coco the gorilla. When did this become a political board?

Gene Upshaw would be fine...but that's not what the owners want !

The owners want someone who will put the screws to Networks, sponsors, players, fans...that is the only reason they turn to a Bush.

I'm getting a feeling of Pay per view and/or Pay NFL GAMES on the horizon.

this would propbably why they would want a scumbag Bush in there.
