Los Angeles Lakers legend Jerry West will be introduced Tuesday as the man who will construct the basketball fortunes of the Grizzlies.
West, 63, has agreed to a multi-year contract for an estimated $5 million annually and possibly a stake in the team to have autonomy over the on-court product for the Grizzlies.
The Commercial Appeal first reported a deal between Grizzlies majority owner Michael Heisley and West last Tuesday night on gomemphis.com and in Wednesday's editions.
Team president Dick Versace will assume the role of general manager, replacing Billy Knight, whom Versace fired April 18.
West, for 42 years a star player, then coach, then general manager of the Lakers, has been a Lakers consultant since retiring as their director of basketball operation in 2000.
West won one NBA championship as a player and six more as a front-office executive.
