Guys -- I'm looking for a new job since I am wrapping up graduation school, does anyone have any suggestions about how to get started? I've been looking at all the main job search sites and sending out my resume wherever I can, but was wondering if anyone had any tips to get a leg up?

This is going to sound cliche, but a lot of it is who you know. If you have some contacts in the industry ask them if they know anyone who is hiring, give them your resume and ask them to put a word in for you. My wife works in Human Resources and gets dozens of resumes of week, when someone she knows reccommends someone else, it goes to the top of the stack. If this fails try working with a headhunter, there are some good ones and can at least get you some good leads....

Thanks, and I agree with this from experience. My strength has always been the interview process, but getting that foot in the door is sometimes a struggle.

The advice I would give is make sure you dont just take a job to take a job.

Especially starting out make sure that you are going to enjoy getting up and going to work everyday. That is half the battle to a full and enriching career.

If you get stuck like many people and settle on a job, then misery can be not far behind. Too many people get stuck making fairly good money and never get out.

Good luck. Sounds like you have the future ahead of you.

Thanks Scott, this rings very true with me. I worked for a few years post college in a job that I just couldn't stand, and it did start to effect me outside of work. This was my main motivation for going back to school while I still could, and hope to not make that mistake again.

Great advice, thanks again.

The man who has the job that he would do for free but gets paid to do it has chosen the correct career.

or simpler put..

do for a living what you would do for free.

I'm finishing up a Masters Degree in Sports Administration, and would like to stay somewhere in the greater New York City area if at all possible. I've been applying to jobs in University athletic departments and the to a few of the major sports league offices.

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

try posting at craigslist and or monster

Try contacting alumni associations of the schools you are interested in. Maybe tell them you like to gamble and give them a few winners, especially games involving their school teams. They will welcome you with open arms.

wow, $25/hr is pretty damn good, I wouldnt want to live there though, and I'm sure you need a lot of training? I'm in the same boat as you Blackman to a lesser extent, about to finish college and have no fn idea what to do, either try and be a bored suit/tie in NYC or move out west or south and look for whatever, I am tired of these crappy winters though 4 months a year it sucks in NY/NJ the rest its good, gluck I wish I could go into sports tough to break into I'm sure but it was always my passion

as a high school coach, i really don't know an AD that wasn't in the school system, coach for a while somewhere or really knows somebody. AD's have to stay late especially in the winter with basketball and have to deal with so many politics. usually you are a teacher and get your masters.

hmm, i know someone from our hometown who works for the Lakeland blue claws in NJ. i can get you an email and maybe he can can tell you if they are looking for something (usually not) or he can point you in right direction. Email me and i will give u his address. i interned for the AAA phillies when i was at college, and i didn't enjoy it at all. To me i might was the same as selling toilets or any other product. There are perks but don't outweigh the salary or benefits of another job. Usually you take a significant paycut bc you are working for a sports team. how about something at a college or something like that?

Will do -- and agree that it's near impossible to break into at the high school level. I'm hoping to break into a college as an associate and work my way up. That's the plan at least, but it's tough to get your foot in the door.
