Deal to bring back Gibbs might be finalized Wednesday

Jan. 6, 2004

By Jay Glazer
SportsLine.com Senior Writer

For the second consecutive year it appears something unthinkable will happen in the coaching ranks.

High-level Redskins sources told SportsLine.com that the team has begun negotiations with former Washington great Joe Gibbs to return to the team as its head coach. Gibbs, who owns a small percentage of the Atlanta Falcons, is thought to be seriously leaning toward a return to the team that made him famous and a deal appears imminent barring a late breakdown or change of heart.

A deal could be finalized as early as Wednesday.

Gibbs would have to surrender his shares with the Atlanta Falcons if he became the Redskins' coach.

Last year the Dallas Cowboys signed Bill Parcells, taking him out of retirement. But Gibbs is a different story. He has been out of coaching since 1992 after leading the Redskins to three Super Bowl titles and then left football completely to join NASCAR.

One person close to the situation said that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder offered Gibbs a rather hefty sum to return to the sidelines and wanted to make a big splash with such a shocking development in the next day or two.

A story in a major daily newspaper revealed that drivers in the top three NASCAR series collected roughly 18 percent of the $1.8 billion generated by NASCAR this past season

It is believed that the highest paid driver this past season was Tony Stewart, and that his 2002 base salary was in the neighborhood of $3 million, a far cry from that of a baseball or football star.

This write up IMO has absolutely no validity, sayin he joined NASCAR is an understatement! He put himself in debt for millions of dollars to own # 28 and #18.Who's combined earnings were a little under 10 million dollars last yr. Not including the money he receives from both the homo depot and interstate battery for sponsoring his rides. I seriously doubt even Mr Synder can compete against Nascar.

Can't believe my eyes!!!

Can't believe my eyes!!!

I would never have thought that my 600th post would be to say how UNBELIEVEABLE it was to see this morning that Joe Gibbs was coming back  And had already hired a very good D Coord. in Greg Williams of the Buffalo Bills.
I 'e taken alot of shit for the way the Skins have been and used to say We need Joe Gibbs back! ... I still can't believe he's coming back
Think I'll have a good day today.

Great move for the Skins, really going to generate interest and should give them a winning feel much like Dallas got this season.

I just hope for Skins fans that Synder lets him run the team the way he knows how to.

Looks like the NFC East might be the dominant division in the NFL yet again.

Man,
just when I was starting to dream of my Cowboys starting to dominate in the next few years, The fuk'n hated Redskins pull Joe Gibbs out of nowhere.
It just isn't fair.
even if my team didn't win i could take comfort in Spurrier destroying the franchise.
THIS SUCKS!!

LOL!! I have a plan for our Cowboys against Gibbs. All we need to do is load up our defense to guard against them running LEFT!!

It should take a little time for Gibbs to get back into a football mode, and all he's known lately is Run Hard....and Turn LEFT!!

I can see lots of sponsor stickers on their helmets and check the trunks on the sidelines for Moonshine. LOL!! He must have learned something from Nascar.

All kidding aside, I think it's a great move for Washington, and for football!! We certainly need more old school coaches that teach class, sportsmanship, and football. He might just be trying to get away from Tony Stewart!! LOL!!

Keep it Positive, Topdog!!

The best thing about this for Washington fans is that Gibbs doesn't need football- he's proved to be more than successful at Nascar. So if Danny boy decides to keep messing around with the team (and I think we can all agree that Gibbs has more football in his pinky than Snyder does in his whole body), Gibbs can pretty much tell him, "Hey Danny, I have a better idea- go fuk yourself!" and just go back to Nascar. This should provide some incentive for Snyder to stay out of the day-to-day operations more than he has in the past.
