"If it's not Tom Brady, it shouldn't be that hard."

That's the assessment of Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel from (over)confident Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter on Wednesday. The winless Dolphins travel to New England this weekend, where they are 13-point underdogs against the five-time defending AFC East champs.

But Porter, mindful of the dropoff in talent New England suffered when reigning MVP Tom Brady was lost for the season to a knee injury in Week 1, dismisses the Cassel-led quarterbacked Patriots as no problem for the Dolphins.

"It'll be good to go out there and get our first victory," he said to ESPN's Tim Graham, who points out that New England puts its NFL record 21-game regular season win streak on the line against a Miami team that is 1-20 during the same span.

More of Porter's remarks (the South Florida Sun-Sentinel has video of some of his comments):

"You treat him like you treat a backup. How do you prepare for a backup? He don't get that many snaps, right? So you throw the kitchen sink at him. That's what we're going to do.

"He's a guy we'll prepare for, but that was his first start since high school. So you can take all the reps you want to. This is a totally different game, a totally different league. He's only had one start in the NFL. Take that for what it's worth. He won it, but if you compare him to Brady, there's no comparison."

Cassel led the Patriots to a 19-10 victory against the Jets in his first career start on Sunday. He was 16-for-23 for 165 and he did not throw an interception.

Porter, since arriving in Miami before last season after being cut by the Steelers has been victorious just once. No word from the Patriots in response to Porter's comments, but he's likely to hear from New England fans on Sunday. (Though perhaps none will be as vicious as the fan in Seattle who once told him he wished Porter had been shot in the back.)

never ceases to amaze me how young men w/great talent from the neck down have so little savy from the adams apple up..

Fish 1-15 a year ago and they acquire a player who can't keep his mouth shut for a contest where their opponent is 66-14 over the last 5 seasons.

nothing new from Mr. Porter ..
AP report from January 12, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS -- Joey Porter can talk all he wants, but the Indianapolis Colts aren't about to get into a shouting match with the Pittsburgh linebacker.

On Wednesday, Porter criticized the Colts for playing "soft" in their first meeting this season and challenged them to play smash-mouth football in Sunday's divisional playoff game. On Thursday, Colts players responded quietly, letting the usually stoic Tony Dungy handle it.

"I'm going to have to go back and watch the tape again after what Joey Porter said because I guess I didn't see it the same way he did," Dungy said Thursday as he held a yellow videotape in his hand. "But I don't think you can beat Pittsburgh without being a tough team."

Porter enjoys jousting with opponents.

In 2004, he was actually ejected before a game against Cleveland when he and Browns running back William Green started throwing punches in warmups. When the Steelers visited Indy in November, Porter apparently taunted Colts players in warmups, too -- something the Colts later cited as motivation in their 26-7 rout.

This time, Porter started sparring even earlier. He criticized the Colts for relying on trickery to win games rather than slugging it out and called Edgerrin James' 124-yard performance in November a "cheap 100." It was the first time the Steelers allowed a runner to top 100 yards in 23 games.

"They don't want to just sit there, line up and play football," Porter told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "They want to try to catch you off guard. They don't want to play smash-mouth football, they want to trick you. ... They want to catch you substituting. Know what I mean? They don't want to just call a play, get up there and run a play. They want to make you think. They want it to be a thinking game instead of a football game."
