Many of you guys will read the article and assume this guy was a low life coke head who was garbage.
There is nothing further from the truth when it came to Johnny as a person or as a friend. If you knew him like i did you would of thought he boxed for free and or to take care of his friends.
I used to play basketball with johnny at the boys club in northeast part of Albuquerque, and down in his turf called the south valley.
He was cocky and fun and man could his boys run you right out of the gym if you ran with them. They had 5 guys built like johnny, 5'7" and about 120 pounds, lol They would be ahead of my team by 15 at halftime, they would head to the van to smoke pot at halftime and we would plan to play a half court game, lol We would win in the end, but Johnny was always cool to us white boys and we would all be invited to his luncheons with george Foreman and go to his post parties.
The most i ever bet on a boxing match was when he fought danny romero in vegas . He had a chin and was so fast.
He beat Romero easily. A while later was said to be selling soap as cocaine on the streets in albuquerque. I just watched a show with him a couple weeks ago and you could tell that without boxing he was lost.
Remember this kid watched drug dealers execute his mom right in front of him. It was said his mom was stabbed 18 times in front of him, tied up and the last he saw her was through the window as the men were dragging her to a old pickup truck.
Then when he was in the hospital a few years back after a cocaine overdose, his brother -in-law and nephew were killed in a auto accident coming to the hospital to see him.
I have great memories of Johnny, he stood for his people, and died for his people.Mike Tyson said Johnny was the best pound per pound boxer ever! He lived fast, played hard, and had a big heart. He will be missed.
