Like all young pitchers, Brian Johnson has been waiting for a long time to make his Major League debut.

And in the last week and a half, the wait has seemed longer for Johnson. He was called up 11 days ago to fill the spot vacated by Clay Buchholz (strained flexor muscle) was placed on the DL. At the time, he was told he might pitch out of the bullpen, but no need arose in those first two games.

Then, when the second-half rotation was put together, Johnson drew the final spot, five games into the current road trip. Johnson will finally get his turn Tuesday night in Houston.

"I didn't know what was going to happen when I got here,'' he said of his promotion on July 11. "(The) layoff has been abnormal. For me, I wanted to get off the mound as much as possible because my last start (scheduled for Pawtucket) was the day I got called up. So this is a little different.''

He's been restless enough during the current series that teammates have begun to mock him.

"I'm starting to get made fun of,'' said Johnson with a smile. "(Guys were asking) 'Can you not sit still, man?' I was throwing bunts to myself off the wall just to stay busy. I don't like not being active. During games, I'm looking for stuff, I'm talking to Torey (Lovullo), talking baseball. I just
love baseball. I'm very, very happy to be here.''

Last weekend, when he was in the bullpen, he mentally prepared himself to be used.

"I didn't know what to expect,'' he said. "I felt like, whenever the (bullpen) phone would ring, my heart would jump down to my stomach. I felt like I was going through to throw my first (warmup) pitch into the visitor's bullpen.''

Johnson noticed some rust when he threw a bullpen session recently, but attributed that to not having pitched since July 6.

"I haven't really been off the mound much in the last 16 days,'' Johnson said. "So some of that was getting comfortable (again) and getting in a rhythm. I've tried to stay on my five-day routine as much as possible.''

He's spoken with teammate Eduardo Rodriguez, who advised him that the nerves he feels Tuesday will go away after he faces his first hitter.

"He said once you get that first hitter out of the waythat's like having a million pounds off your shoulders and then you settle in,'' Johnson relayed. "I think he said in his pre-game warmup, he was all over the place and then once he got that first hitter, he was fine. Wade (Miley) pulled me aside yesterday and he's someone I've looked up to since spring training. He said, 'Go out there and have fun; go up, just attack and do what's gotten you here.' ''

Johnson threw a simulated game last Thursday to Ryan Hangian, who will catch the debut Tuesday.

"We got on the same page,'' said Johnson, noting that he threw to Hangian a few times in spring training, too. "He knows my stuff.''

Nationals Joe Ross will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Tuesday's game against the Mets, MLB.com's William Ladson reports.

Because of off-days and the all-star break, the Nationals had not had to fill that spot until now.

Constantly converted Tanner Roark has made six starts for the Nationals this season, but he threw Friday and Saturday as the long-relief option in the game suspended by power failure. He would not be rested enough to start Tuesday. Other spot-start options like Taylor Jordan and A.J. Cole also threw Saturday for the Nationals and Class AAA Syracuse, respectively. Ross will be on five days? rest, so he was the natural choice.

Since allowing six earned runs in 20 1/3 innings over his first three major league starts, Ross allowed six earned runs combined in five starts with Class AAA Syracuse. He is 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts.

?He pitched well. He stepped in his first start and acted as if he?d been here before. And then of course his other two starts were even better,? Williams said. ?So we have a comfort level that he can come up here to do what he can do to help us win that particular game that he pitches. He?s been pitching very well, and there?s no indication it would be otherwise when he gets back here.?

The Nationals acquired Ross from the Padres this offseason, one of two prospects they received for sending outfielder Steven Souza Jr. to Tampa Bay in a three-way deal. Baseball America rated him 31st on its Midseason Top 50 Prospects list, the second-highest rated player in the organization behind Turner (No. 9).

Because Strasburg has not yet thrown a bullpen session, which will have to be followed by at least one rehab outing and likely two or more, the Nationals will probably need someone to fill his spot the next few times through the rotation. Ross could fill in until he returns. The Nationals will need to clear a spot for him on the 25-man roster.

I read a few interviews with this Johnson character...he sounds like a bit of a "tool bag"...I like the numbers Ross is putting up, looking into this one a bit more.

Taking the mound for the Astros will be Velasquez, another top draft pick and prized prospect.

Selected in the second round of the 2010 draft, Velasquez has shown he belongs in the major leagues through six starts. The right-hander sports an 0-1 record with a 3.94 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched.

Velasquez came up with Lance McCullers earlier this season as part of the Astros? playoff push by way of a potent farm system. Velasquez, unlike Johnson, is known as a power pitcher. He?s armed with a fastball that rides up in the high-90s at times and a breaking ball that has helped limit opponents to a .194 batting average in 36 at-bats.

In order to spell his 23-year-old arm, the Astros optioned Velasquez back to the minors after his July 7 start, a 6 1/3 inning, two-run effort against the Indians. His career-high innings total for a season is just 124 2/3, which he reached in 2013, so Astros manager A.J. Hinch and the front office intend to keep a careful eye on the right-hander throughout the season.

?It?s not pleasant news, but they?re looking out for me,? Velasquez said following the 2-0 loss vs. the Indians. ?I think I?ll be fully refreshed.?

A rested Velasquez might be a worrisome sight for the Red Sox, but fortunately for them, the California native has not pitched well at home this season. At Minute Maid Park he owns a 5.71 ERA in three starts, a stark contrast from his 1.84 ERA on the road.

Anyone have some thought to these random musings in posting:

- 73 percent on Houston
- Boston off a double header
- Boston offense looked abysmal during DH
- Red Sox travelled to Houston
- Rookie pitcher starting at Minute Maid for Red Sox
- Line opened -120...looks to have moved 10 cents to 130.

I usually dont play with heavy pub plays and any and all input is welcomed. Thanks and good luck. :0008

I don't believe you can live on em but if you like a wager there is no reason to get off it just because the public is on it heavy...Public wins a pretty fair % of the time, if they lost 80% of the time placing wagers would be a cinch...I'm on Hou today because I like the situation for many of the reasons you stated above, also I believe this kid going for the Sox sounds a little on edge...when I look at heavy public wagers I also look at who the team is, the Stros are not typically a huge public team...more stats for ya

Debut pitchers making starts after the ASG are 3-11 Last 14 starts, era over 5 per 9 innings, 3.5 runs first 5 allowed on the average.

I've seen BJ several times since his days in HS and Fla St and in the IL for Paw'ket. He's got some funk across his body but hitters like Altuve, Gattis and Correa may enjoy what they see.

Red Sox are reeling and their pen is spent!
