Joker, I asked Jack for your email, but in case you see this first - I am trying to switch a background in two figures for a paper we are about to publish, from black to white. Is there an "easy" way to do this in photoshop? I looked online a little, but it seemed like a process, and there are a lot of small components to these figures.

They are .jpg files

I would really appreciate your help if possible.

Thanks.

Not sure what a "background in two figures" means exactly.

However - to go from color to black and white - go to

Image>
Adjustments>
Black & White>

Not sure what version of Photoshop you have, but that should work.

If you are looking to have to figures in color and the background in black and white - then look for the magnetic lasso tool in the tool bar (should be far left of your screen located 3rd tool down in the tool palette)

(Note: Just send me the photo and I will do it for you.)

If the lasso is selected - click and hold on it and find magnetic lasso.

Cut out figures with lasso.
Cut them and paste them into new layer
Select background and adjust to black and white.

I re-read this - now I am confused.

Sounds like she wants to just change the background on the image from black to white - and I think you told her how with the lasso tool if the image doesn't have to be too specifically clean. She'll probably need to adjust her lasso tolerances to do it effectively (as you know), and she might need an explanation there.

I am not really sure the magnetic lasso will work - I do know how to use that, although in an "amateur" way, I would say. I will email you the files - if you can do it, that would be awesome! And I will send you a complimentary copy of the final paper when it is published...although it might not be all that interesting to you, ha.
