Could really use your help with something if you can see this. I need to know if/how I can reset the password on a Windows 7 Administrator account.
We've got a bit of a problem here at work with one of the computers and no tech guy around to help.

Anybody here can help me? We're locked out of making edits on an important spreadsheet because it's protected with the Admin password. Deadline tomorrow.

I'm trying to download something called Windows Password Key: http://www.lostwindowspassword.com/

well that was a miserable failure. Program wouldn't even install properly

I got a phone call about this thread

The default admin password is either blank or administrator

Windows locks shit down pretty good - let me do a little research to see if anyone has been successful resetting one

is the admin named administrator or someone else's name?

Do you know how to boot to safe mode?

reboot your computer and after the computer starts to boot up press the F8 key continuously until the Windows Boot Menu pops up

Select Safe mode with Networking

When you get to the login screen - If there is a user called Administrator - Select it - Try a blank password 1st if that doesn't work try administrator

If you are able to get in you can change your account to administrator for the night

Good luck

Thank JOSHNAUDI. I had to get out of there because the maintenance people were coming in to clean the vent ducts. I'm gonna head in early tomorrow and try those steps. I really appreciate it. We've got a deadline at end of business day tomorrow so hopefully one of those solutions will work.

Tried rebooting with safe mode and using the command prompt to reset the pass for the admin account. Some girl who worked at this computer for a week went in and changed her account to the admin so she could download whatever and then forgot the password of course. It's not blank though, that we're sure of.

Gotcha - There is a chance that she had her own username and changed the setting to allow her to be an admin

There should still be a user named - administrator - In fact windows 7 hides this well enough at start up that most people don't change any of the settings.

Just so I 100% understand
When you logged in during safe mode, There was a user named 'administrator' (not Josh the admin, but administrator) that you could select, and you tried blank and it did not work

I'm just trying to make sure that was tried although when I read it I sound like a dick - Not intended

She might have changed the name of the administrator user to her name and added a password and that would then be a tougher cookie to crack.

Its some one else's name. They changed their account to the admin at some point, but it's the only admin account now. Gonna try creating a bootable password reset disk tomorrow using this.
