Why don't teams play small ball more? Cubs had 1st and 2nd with no one out and Rizzo at the plate. I know he's got a bigger bat, but why not move them to 2nd and 3rd? Then a sac fly ties the game and a single gives you the lead. Can't figure out why managers avoid this like the plague.

because they know playing for one run early in a game will not cut it vs the Dodgers. double that with the fact it was one of their best hitters in Rizzo. No need to take his bat away from him this early in the game.

Yes if it was the pitcher batting or going for the lead in the 8th or 9th.

Basically what other people said. Most statistical studies have shown that 'small ball' only works when the average runs per game in the league dips below a certain point (l can't remember the exact amount, but it isn't there right now).

You really only want to do it in late inning games when you are trying to break a tie.
Or maybe against extremely hot star pitchers.

A run is a run.... Every one helps... When you're playing a better opponent you need to scratch out as many as possible and keep pressure on the other team... Who knows... It could lead to a big inning

You only get 27 outs in a game. Handing the opposing team an out tends to lower your expected runs per game over the course of a season.
It's all situational obviously.
