So I just brought home the first pet that is all mine, not my parents or roommates or siblings. She is an all white Siberian Husky. She just turned 3 months old. I'm excited but nervous at the same time. I have no idea how to train dogs to not use my carpet as a toilet. Some say crate train her. Others say Puppy Pads. I know a lot on here are dog experts and any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Be patient. And remember positive reinforcement is better than negative. You guys will be friends for life and a dogs temperament is learned in the first 6 months.

Devote more time now and it will pay off with a mentally healthy dog in the long run.

The dog is going to pee and chew stuff up for a while. Go into it knowing it and it's less frustrating.

Congrats on the new life long friend!

Yep....number one rule is be patient.

Also if dog urinates indoors spray the spot with Vinegar.

If dogs smell urine in one spot they will pee there again. Ya want to get the smell of urine out of the house.

It takes awhile to train a dog....be patient:SIB

Thanks guys. I'm appreciate the advice. Im ok with the peeing. Potty training takes time. I live alone so dont have someone to watch after her for the 8 hours I'm at work, so kennel training is pretty much a must from what ive read. The problem with the kennel training is the crying and howling. I live in an apartment so my neighbors can pretty much here me doing anything let alone a dog howling in the wee hours of the night. I'm hoping she will just get used to it and it will stop sooner rather than later.

Crate training is a gradual process. You MUST make it a secure place and not a place a puppy goes when he is in trouble. In other words, dogs are conditionally trained.

Start with a ROUTINE and follow it everyday. If he is in the crate and not barking, let him out and reward him.

If he is barking, DO NOT remove him as he will put the two together and you'll be worse off.

There are several great you tube videos regarding eliminating barking while crate training.

Best of luck!

good advice, crate training is essential in the beginning, if puppy stays indoors, otherwise a doggy door and back yard will suffice.

my husky is 12 years old crate trained thats his safe haven. They have lots of energy so you must find an activity to burn it otherwise thats when they get bored and chew etc. My dog never did took him on 10 mile bike rides to burn his energy than worked on commands exercise discipline, affection that order. When you walk him start with a short leash you are always in front so he follows you that way you become pack leader. They must have at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. When weather does not permit me to walk him I still put him on tradmill 20 minutes minimum. People think he is 3-4 by the way he looks and still runs and play like a puppy. Feed him high quality dog food. I use earth born primitive nature its the highest rated dog food you can get. They are very independant dogs and get bored quickly so challenge them all the time.

Hide treats in the crate from time to time so the dog will find treats in there and associate good thoughts with the crate.

Puppy pads are expensive as hell ! Yikes ! ! :scared

There are at least two medical products warehouses in the LV area near Charleston or Sahara? West side. Use adult diapers, same stuff, larger quantity. McKesson is the brand name, however I cannot remember the name of the businesses that are in LV.

I had a Queensland Pup I habd to pad and crate train when I lived in LV.

Question for you Steve Di?

How is the Husky going to do in the heat in the summer? Do you have a pool ?

sounds like an A/C dog to me..

Huskies are super pets...

but man o man do they require attention..

sure hope you got this animal to go everywhere you go besides work..

I thought my labs were needy but Huskies made them look like self-providers.

:0074 good luck Steve..not a more loving dog on the planet..

Congrats Steve. You will find a great friend in her. Nothing like coming home and being welcomed by a loving dog.

Just on your point on work. Especially for a Husky seems like a long time to be in a crate. If you can make it work financially may not be bad to invest in a dog walker service.

Many will come right into your place get the dog walk them for 20 mins and then back into the crate. I am sure in your area there are a ton of them. Yes it is extra coin, but having an active dog like a Husky exercised a bit will pay off with a great happy dog!!

Enjoy her!

I put my dog in daycare three days a week. If you do that you really need to check those places out. Most of them are complete shit and don't really do anything for your dog. However, if you can find a good one, it can be really great for your dog.

Sounds more like a boot camp for the dog
