Professional Athletes a Fans Perspective.
By RobertBIrish (Robert Burgin)
Is it only me or is everyone else in this country getting tired of spoiled Millionaires that have absolutely no pride in themselves anymore? These guys only seem to be showing up putting on their uniform and going through the motions and then expect to be paid, the lowest paid players in professional sports make more than a two income middle class family and they complain! Speaking of the middle class I don't know if you guys know it or not but without us you would not have a job and by the attendance records at some of the major league parks it looks like I am not the only one that is tired of paying inflated prices for tickets to four dollar hotdogs.

You know baseball has gone so far down hill since the last strike and now these guys are complaining and talking about another one if they do it will destroy the game because they have not recovered from the last one and these greedy spoiled millionaires are complaining because they want 5 million instead of 4 million, I am sorry but for four million dollars I would do the Mexican hat dance at times square naked at lunch hour and would never have to work again, but these bums can't live off of it!

Does anyone else remember the good old days when professional athletes had pride and were loyal to a team? I sure do! These days players are lucky to be with a team 3 years because of free agency, players go to the team that is the highest bidder Alex Rodriquez is the biggest example of an overpaid spoiled brat. Look at Seattle since they got rid of those overpriced jerks! I am so very tired of players that make more in one game than almost every fan sitting in those seats make in 6 months that paid out his hard earned money to watch these overpaid losers to go through the motions, look at the Yankees this year they have as much or more talent than any team in Major League baseball but they can't hold a lead to save their lives and Roger Clemens is through in my opinion he couldn't even shut down a pitiful batting Baltimore team twice this year.

Then you have football players that are raping woman, beating their wives and getting busted with drugs, what are these idiots thinking? And they complain because some other player is getting paid more than they are! Give me a break you are getting paid millions of dollars to play a game that at one time I am sure they all loved! But now it is all about the money no more no less that is what all of this crap comes down to the money! They don't care about you or me the people that pay the over inflated prices so they can make millions of dollars and complain about it.

And what is up with these teams blacking out games because they don't have a sellout? In my opinion all that is, is extortion by the owners! I want to watch the Marlins play in Philadelphia but it is blacked out and I am in Florida! What do they want me to do buy a plane ticket and go to Philly? No they want you to have to pay to watch the game another fine example of these jerks telling us that if we want to watch them play mediocre ball we have to pay out our butts! A perfect example of the public being extorted!

And lets not forget the poster child for spoiled millionaires Mike Tyson this guy has been on trial so many times for raping woman, he is a complete basket case biting people and attacking people at press conferences and did anyone else see him completely lose it after he attacked Lennox Lewis he was out of control and is dangerous the only place he should be boxing is in a federal prison this guy has lost his mind and their are still people willing to let him fight! For what? You got it money bottom line and who's money are they after yours and mine the people that bust their butts to pay all that money to watch.

And any player that charges a kid to get an autograph is a sorry low life scumbag in my opinion! Here you are making millions of dollars and you are going to charge some 12 year old kid with stars in his eyes to get an autograph from a player he idolizes! I am just so totally disgusted with the state of professional sports! And if any of these jerks goes on strike I say we go on strike on them! Don't pay for that ticket to go to that baseball or football game I am tired of prices going up because these big rich greedy babies want more, so I say don't buy that ticket next time take your kid to the local amusement park and let him enjoy himself their not at some stadium where a spoiled millionaire is going to show him how to be the biggest whiner and get paid millions for it!

I couldn't agree more Robert. I can't get interested in a game anymore unless I have something on it. As far as being a fan of a team is concerned it is more like being the fan of a logo. Players very rarely stay around to play out their careers.

I remember Sandy Kofax speaking once. He was asked why he pitched a particular World Series game on three days rest, with a bad arm. His answer was that even though he was okay money wise that there were other guys on the team who the difference between a winners share and a losers share of a World Series check meant taking the summer off or getting a job.

Free agency ruined sports.

IMHO

Terrific write up. I whole-heartedly concur with you. And that's why I enjoy college sports over professional sports!

Also, in addition - it's the owners who are to blame as they are the ones who are stupid to pay such astronomical wages. Simply nuts! But then, aren't the fans at fault too? Afterall they are the ones shelling out big bucks for paid entertainment. What a rat race! One day all of this will probably explode.

Sorry just venting as you certainly brought up a sore point about professional sports.

You're exactly right... I agree completely. :(

The sad part is, they manipulate our emotions. They conjure up memories of our youth by exploiting the "game", opening day, going to the park to watch the local team with dad. It's emotional rape in my opinion. The marketing behind it causes alot of fans to get caught up into the hype, and then buy season tickets. About the time JUNE rolls around, they wish they hadn't, but it's too late. The "fan" may dump his seats to a buyer for the rest of the season, but he'll be drooling like a puppy come Spring time next season. It's sad really...

And your comment regarding paying for autographs is right on. I KNOW there are alot of kids up there getting autographs only to sell, or maybe are getting paid by some Memorabilia dealer to get the autograph, but come on. Like you mentioned, how much is enough! You're making over $2 MIL if you're WORTH getting an autograph from, and if that's not enough, well, you got some major problems jack. The world is becoming a wasteland of greed, and it's all about the money. It's sad really, because I love sports. I love competition in playing and watching. BUT, when you watch, especially if you're paying to watch, and you see guys going half-speed or not trying, it makes you sick. MOST fans would sell their soul for an opportunity to be a PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE and make that kind of jack, yet day after day we watch these guys go thru the motions as if they're doing US a favor by even playing... :nono:

Hey Pal, next time you want to do me a favor... don't! Let the eager kid on the bench play his butt off for the ML Minimum. Win or lose, I'd rather see effort than wasted talent.

RBI......So True. I remember the days when major leaguers had to have a job in the off season. As a kid, I kept a list of all of my fave player's off season jobs. Most were salesmen for something or other. And, yes, I wholeheartedly agree, the NBA is the worst.....more laziness per pound of meat than in any other sport, IMHO. THE HITMAN

Robert, great writeup! Would only disagree about Clemens., the guy works harder than any 20 year old kid who hasn't received his first MLB check. Granted, he can't do what he did when he was 25, few can. It isn't however because he is soft. He took the ball on 3 days rest last week, few would. Certainly not many 6 time Cy Young winners. Ricky Henderson can't steal 50 bags anymore either, but he stays in shape and plays as hard as guys half his age. Amen to the few true professionals, because you are correct, they are a dying breed.

I stopped being a fan when the Dodgers and Giants left New York. I swore that I would never pay to see a game again. If we all stayed away from the ballpark free agency and these crazy salaries would be no more.

i too disagree about Clemens......the guy is one of the hardest workers in the offseason and he is just getting up there in age....he also does a lot of community service work around town.......hard to diss a guy who has won that many Cy Youngs and works harder than anyone else to try to win another one....

NBA people are a bunch of thugs......they do nothing for the community -- instead spending all their money on stupid things and hiring their posse's to do stupid things -- some NBA players have their own private DJ's, or hire people to polish their jewelry, etc.etc.....unreal.....wouldn't be shocked if the posse's wiped the NBA players asses.....

the average person is so far distanced from the NBA average person that we are detached from the sport.....baseball still has guys who work their asses off and are down to earth people.....name me a person in the NBA who is "down to earth"?
they are a bunch of thugs and only concerned about their "respect" and who gives them their "respect"

as much as i like to antagonize the astros, i still like to go see players like Berkman, Oswalt, Ausmus, Dotel, and D. Ward play ball...they actually have evident personalities instead of manufactured demeanors and are good guys.......i could give a rats ass about Biggio and Bagwell -- they are a couple greedy, whining, chokers......good grief, Berkman just signed the stupidest contract in history this offseason....think it was like 3 years for 9 million or something like that.....while Biggio gets 8 million a year hitting 280 and 080 in the clutch...

i can go to all the NBA games i want in this town for FREE and only went to two all year & even if we were playing good teams it is unwatchable.....i went to SA and saw the spurs play the Lakers and really only wanted to see the Alamodome....the game itself was horrid, and there is no way i would pay 10$ to see it again!

i do not care to watch a bunch of thugs run up and down, whine and complain, wear their fur coats and pink suits after the game, try to imitate everything Jordan does, and show up to play hard some nights and 80% of the time just go through the motions.....then when the playoffs roll around, the game is so out of hand that the refs have lost all control and it is pretty much their decision on who wins.....
