hilarious...was reading an article on the twins and this thread at the same time....the article didn't even mention jones...apparently i feld offended!

either way, jaque vaughn was overrated...and that Kansas team was 34-1??? and was a DD fav and essentially got run, even though the final was a 3 point game....AZ was in control the whole way.

Virginia also upset one of Pierces'/LaFrentz Kansas teams early in the tourney....which was a much bigger upset than Arizona's talented squad taking them out.

the guy does have some tank jobs....but he did manage to beat UA in 2003 in the regional final in the pond......i'll never forget him taking off his jacket and throwing it on the floor after a bad call......two good teams that year, thought the cats should have won.

Hmm Really ?/// 1998 getting destroyed by 25 as a DD fav in regional final v Utah?

Or lets start in 89 - roy's 1st year (Roy by the way has made more final four's than lute during his choking history)

89 1 seed doesnt even get to regional final
90 2 seed loses in 2nd round
91 2 seed doesnt get to regional final
92 lose to 14 seed in 1st round
93 2 seed 1st round loss
94 2 seed to ff - good performance
95 1st round loss as 4 seed to miami oh
96 sweet 16 as 3 seed - as expected
97 Great title run as a high seed
98 see above
99 1st round loss as a 4 seed
00 1 seed loses in 2nd round to wisconsin
01 great run to final and jobbed by refs v Puke - had a huge future on Az I bet when they had tanked early in year and then lute's wife died - saw the run coming
02 sweet 16 as a 3 seed - as expected
03 1 seed loses in regional final
04 1st round loss in 8-9 game

So that makes in 16 years 3 whole times Az beat expectations and 2 times they were met in the big dance

Roy seems like a nice man but he only knows one way to play (balls to the wall) A well coached team can tempo the ____ out of Mr Williams. Teams that match NC intensity will have a good chance at beating them. Kelvin Sampson's Okla teams (although much less talented) are much the same way: they can be beaten by teams that match the Sooners intensity.

I would say the first 20 minutes of UNC tonight demonstrates my point - plenty of vulnerable teams and to say any team just has to be a favorite is nuts

Didn't matter what the jerseys said tonight when a team shoots like fsu did they will be in any game against any team. That's why the tourny is great, a team can get hot on a given night and take down the best teams.

in 03 kansas got beat by syracuse in the finals....i thought Roy did a great job with that team

that year syracuse beat 3 big 12 teams to win it all...mcnamara was red hot 1st half and Kansas almost pulled off amazing comeback as Anthony had superb game

worst year for me personally was when Rhode Island led by Cuttino Mobley and some other 5 footer beat Kansas in '98

Scott,

Thats hard to say wthout seeing the brackets, but of course I would presume that Illinois would have to be one as they shoud get a good draw. UNC would be another as they have the most talent in the country, but then again your dealing with a coach that has faltered before and a team that has a few head cases. Im not sure about Wake, I like their backcourt but do not like their defense and I feel that you have to be able to play shut down defense to win the title. I guess I may substiute Okie State as the third team over Wake, they have seniors and final four experience, but they lack depth in the front court. As I said until the brackets come out it is next to impossible to determine who has the best path, it's a crapshoot with about 10 teams.

Stanford losing tonight morethan likely eliminated them from an at large barring a deep run in the Pac 10 Tourny and should open a spot for a team from the MVC (NIWA, Wich,) or a Big Ten school (Ind). The Cardinals controlled ther own destiny but have Wash on deck and more than likely will lose to them. The MVC schools are really more deserving to go at this point than a banged up Stanford

Based on what? Find me a true quality non-conf win from that conference? Wichita doesnt have one. Can stretch and say Iowa State at home for Niowa and Ohios State for Creighton, and So Illinois beat Vandy. Then of course we could discuss all the losses. So explain the "deserving" part.

Sun Tzu,

While I am not disputing that SILL, Creight, and NIWA do not have name power in their wins, we both know that these teams have a hard time scheduling teams from the BCS unless they can catch them on a neutral court. Im not sure if your complaint is about Stanford or Iowa St, but if it's Stanford then SILL has a much stronger RPI and and NIWA has a stronger RPI. I retract Creighton, from this list. As far as big wins, SILL has nothing to go wild about but NIWA did beat ISU and nearly knocked off Iowa on the road. If your beef is about Iowa State then whom did they beat out of league this year? They played a very mild OOC schedule and Iowa was perhaps the best team they played and they lost by 10. Bottom line if you told me that NIWA or SILL would be playing Stanford or ISU on a neutral court and it was even up, I would have no problem backing either NIWA or SILL against either team.

I agree, I love the type of ball Northern Iowa and Souther Illinois plays, I would take them + pts and ML vs Stanford/Iowa St/ West Virginia and other teams of that caliber from big conferences

I am not disouting which of those schools are better, or arguing Stanford or Iowa State deserve anything - although for ISU winning at KU and Texas beats all of the aforementioned midmajors combined. BUT, you all are talking about subjective criteria. Objectively, there is nothing to say those teams are worthy. Unless you try and call RPI objective. How can a team like Wichita have an RPI in the mid 30s when they ahvent beaten a top 50 team? It makes zero sense - the RPI is a bigger joke than ever. But maybe you believe Vermont is a Top 15 team.
