Karl Rove to Resign
At the End of August
By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter
August 13, 2007 7:28 a.m.

Karl Rove, President Bush's longtime political adviser, is resigning as White House deputy chief of staff effective Aug. 31, and returning to Texas, he said in an interview with Paul Gigot, editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page. (See related commentary.)

'THE MARK OF ROVE'

Read the commentary by The Wall Street Journal's editorial page editor, Paul Gigot, on his interview with Karl Rove.
? Discuss: What do you think of Karl Rove's decision to resign?Mr. Rove, who has held a senior post in the White House since President Bush took office in January 2001, told Mr. Gigot he first floated the idea of leaving a year ago. But he delayed his departure as, first, Democrats took Congress, and then as the White House tackled debates on immigration and Iraq, he said. He said he decided to leave after White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten told senior aides that if they stayed past Labor Day they would be obliged to remain through the end of the president's term in January 2009.

"I just think it's time," Mr. Rove said in the interview. "There's always something that can keep you here, and as much as I'd like to be here, I've got to do this for the sake of my family." Mr. Rove and his wife have a home in Ingram, Texas, and a son who attends college in nearby San Antonio.

In the interview, Mr. Rove said he expects Democrats to give the 2008 presidential nomination to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, whom he described as "a tough, tenacious, fatally flawed candidate." He also said Republicans have "a very good chance" to hold onto the White House in next year's elections.

Mr. Rove also said he expects the president's approval rating to rise again, and that conditions in Iraq will improve as the U.S. military surge continues. He said he expects Democrats to be divided this fall in the battle over warrantless wiretapping, while the budget battle -- and a series of presidential vetoes -- should help Republicans gain an edge on spending restraint and taxes.

Mr. Rove has advised Mr. Bush for more than a decade, working with him closely since Mr. Bush first announced he was running for governor of Texas in 1993 and serving as chief strategist in his presidential campaign in 2000. Before joining the White House, he was president of Karl Rove & Company, the Austin, Texas-based public affairs firm he founded. Mr. Rove first became involved in Republican politics in the 1970s.

The Wall Street Journal published the interview Monday.

Mr. Bush was expected to make a statement Monday with Mr. Rove.

"Obviously it's a big loss to us," White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. "He's a great colleague, a good friend, and a brilliant mind. He will be greatly missed, but we know he wouldn't be going if he wasn't sure this was the right time to be giving more to his family, his wife Darby and their son. He will continue to be one of the president's greatest friends."

too little too late.

He has done all the harm he can do. Now they get him out of there just in time for the next presidential election to distance him.

what a joke

More time with the family, huh?

The Wall Street Journal piece quotes Dana Perino as saying, "we know he wouldn't be going if he wasn't sure this was the right time to be giving more to his family, his wife Darby and their son."

What's the real reason he's leaving?

This guy is going to prison in a few years. When there is a Dem President and congress they will be calling Karl Rove up for questions and there will not be any Bush executive privilege. So Karl sweat it out in Texas, you and Gonzo will be back in DC, there's a cell there with your names on it.

Figured you guys to think Rove is the most capable man on the planet.

He did take the bumbling George Bush under his wing all the way to the Oval office......

not once but TWICE!:mj07:

What more does the man need to do?

Without any bias.....

he has beaten the Left to a pulp for some time now

Game Over

No question about it. He's an expert at manipulating the right segments of a gullible public at the right times. He's been as crafty and ruthless as a poltical advisor can possibly be. Bush owes pretty much everything to him.

I know I watched too many "West Wing" episodes, but my question really is, "Whose campaign is he going to orchestrate in 2008?" You know the GOP candidates will be asking his advice, and you know how much he must hate Democrats.

According to a report I saw, the folks calling into Faux News are thinking he will be a part of the remaining Thompson's campaign. Makes sense...take about the only candidate not being dismissed by viewers of the Republican party (mainly because he hasn't officially announced, I figger...) and mold him to do proper Rovian bidding for a few years. Or at least until Hillary beats his arse, that is, thanks to the soccer moms.

I'm not sure anyone currently running for the Republican nomination would want him along for the ride, actually. Plenty of yucchy backwash in that drink for most these days. Dubbya was easy to mold and prop up...not sure the other guys would be as "Play-DOH" like.

Boy i tell ya you and Smurph act like this next election is so cut and dry. I sure wish i had this type of confidence. These guys play dirty and will again. How to get over the hump of Rudy running his lying mouth about 9/11, is gonna be a huge problem. If nobody is gonna take him on and the dems do the same old crap of playing defense first, then its gonna be another long four years.

He is sick of it Six. Just took him a little longer cause he is a nicer guy. Look at Chadman. He use to be so polite and professional and now he has an edge. He is sick of it. Now if we can somehow wake up your part of the country we all will live in a much better peaceful place. All i hear about when people i know go to the South is this Southern hospitality. Maybe your politicians take advantage of this.

Lets see--he's been GW's chief political adviser (campaign manager) since he ran against a supposedly unbeatable candidate for governor--won that--won both pres elections--believe I for one would take any advice he had.

I have an idea he'll still be running things behind the scenes.

I have no doubt that he knows what it takes to get someone elected, Wayne, but his name is synonymous with most everything that Bush takes heat for these days...which would be detrimental at face value for many.

No doubt the republicans who will need every possible advantage come election time this season will be listening to his "advice" if possible. He certainly has some insight on getting elected. If he can do it quietly, as you suggest, say, via White House e-mails or something that nobody can trace/find...then you'll REALLY have something going for ya.

The American people better wake up. Who ever Rove lends his support to will be another Neocon and should not be elected to anything! Rove has out smarted the Dems at every turn. He even outsmarted other Republicans. Remember when McCain ran against him? This guy is bad news.

Stevie did the guy really ever win anything? Bullshit in Florida, Bullshit in Ohio. Ann Richards warning Gore of the snake job they did to her in Texas. These guys are always behind in The exit polls but somehow always win:shrug: This is what Republicans do best. Win aka steal elections. they can't run a country to save their lives but they know how to come out on top when it is election time. Listening to Rudy lie and lie again you know he will resort to anything to win. this piece of shit won't even win in his own State but he will sweep the South.
