The Lion of the Senate was a force whose passing leaves a great void Shamrock. His presence will be missed by all in this country whether they realize it or not.

Weeks after I turned 21,I broke my neck in a swimming pool and became paralyzed from the neck down in a instant. The story of the accident was on page 2 of the Boston Herald. The next day Senator Kennedy called my parents asking what he could do. Weeks later he appeared in my rehabilitation hospital room introducing himself.
I know many don't like him, he proved himself to me.
RIP SENATOR

great info, thanks for sharing

Dan, I was hoping you would start a thread on Teddy in the political forum. It was only right that you started it.

Thanks for sharing the story. He will be missed.

Japanese Robot Research Center Unveils ?Wheelchair of the Future?

Robotics and medical experts in Japan on Wednesday unveiled the prototype of a new hi-tech electric wheelchair that resembles a scooter and promises greater mobility.
Users ride astride the four-wheeled Rodem -- rather than sitting in it, as in a conventional wheelchair -- steer it with a joystick and hold onto motorbike-style handles while the knees and chest rest on cushions.

The design allows users to slide more easily on and off the vehicle, lessening reliance on care-givers to lift them, the inventors said.

"I believe this is a whole new idea for a wheelchair," said Makoto Hashizume, head of the Veda International Robot Research and Development Centre and a medical professor of Kyushu University.

"With this vehicle, users can move around more freely and more actively without much help from other people."

It is the first invention unveiled by the Veda centre, which opened in May in southwestern Munakata city and is a joint project of Japanese robot maker Tmsuk Co. and researchers from 10 universities and institutes.

The robotics and medical specialists, including from Germany and Italy, aim to invent robots for use in health and nursing, an area where high-tech Japan, with its fast-greying population, is seen as a world leader.

The inventors said they had no immediate plans to commercialise the new vehicle, which would first have to meet government safety standards, but said they were open to offers from private companies in Japan and overseas.

Tmsuk president Yoichi Takamoto said the Rodem may also be used by people who are not disabled to simply ride and enjoy.

Takamoto said the Rodem was too simple to be called a robot, but added that it may evolve into one.

"We can add more robot-like functions in future," he said. "For example, we could add a new function so it comes to your bedside when you call."

Kennedys could have been republicans, the party of me, but instead put their lives on the line for poorer Americans. Kennedys, a real American family to be proud of.

I can't help but wonder how different the past 46 years would have been
had Jack and Bobby not been assassinated and had Chappaquiddick not occured.

interesting thought. I'd venture to guess much different. People throw stones, and in many cases the brothers brought it on themselves. Marilyn Monroe, the Cape Cod incident, among others, many others.
But at the core these were good people, JFK inaugural speech was amazing, going to the moon, forming the peace core, doing for your country. Bobby and everything he did for civil rights. Eunice who just died 2 weeks ago, forming the special Olympics. These were special people, who generously and continually and tirelessly helped not only the working people, but people for whatever reason needed the help. It's hard for me to explain what these people were and meant to the Commonwealth. Tens and tens of thousands of people are still, at this minute after 10 p.m. at night on a Thursday paying their respects at the JFK library.

Well, we'll never know Shamrock, but it sure would have been interesting, wouldn't it? The mind reels with the different turns history might have taken without those 3 fateful events.

Would Jack have prevented the buildup in Vietnam? What would the space program look like today? What I'd give to see Bobby debate Nixon in 68. Would it have meant no Nixon, no Watergate, no Ford? Could Teddy have won in 76 and then could he have beat Reagan in 80 as the incumbent? Would Reagan then have decided he was too old to run in 84? Would Teddy have been able to push national healthcare through Congress from the oval office? Hmmm... the mind reels.

Why is it that Japan is light years ahead of America in this field ?

Why is Japan light years ahead .... Well let me tell you,King George declared war on the terrorist. The United States and the huge coalition of the willing,"Not so willing, not so huge", went to war and by doing so took the wealth of the nation with it...now tell me anything that Bush did that was a good thing ... He was incompetent... the only thing he was good at was taking vacations !! THE COUNTRY WAS ON VACATION FOR 8 YEARS THAT'S WHY !!
For those 8 years this country was at the mercy of the Bush neo-cons... war and the planning of wars... high-jacking the constitution.... rewriting laws... making new laws as they go... If you where in the white house CABAL or one might say if you where in the inner circle then wealth was spontaneous. All that was in the family got filthy RICH.
Now that the country loves war and we will fight them over there rather than fight them here... That's a bunch of bull shit !!
Obama is stuck... and he is no better than Bush, just another liar that will do anything and say anything to get his friends rich, and maybe he will out do Bush, all his friends may get richer... isn't that what it is all about ??
I know that I got off topic... two of the worst days in this countries history is the day that Woodrow Wilson sold the currency to the bankers and the FED was established and the assination of John F Kennedy, call me names if you like, the assination stinks , i've never trusted our government since !!

We all have skeletons in our closets ..... The Kennedys where a great family... because they cared about people and used there wealth to help the ordinary, the poor and the less fortunate, it really doesn't matter how they obtained their wealth, they did good things.
