This is pretty damn lame.

http://www.tmz.com/2010/02/14/kevin-smith-southwest-airlines-twitter-safety-risk-fat/

How is it fair to make someone overweight buy two tickets as opposed to everyone else having to buy one.

Does it suck to sit on a plane next to someone who is spilling over into your seat. SURE but it is called coach.
I can't believe a airline has not been sued for discrimination or even the humiliation of pulling someone off a flight for this.
How about the airlines modify a few seats on each plane for the rare overweight flier and charge a slight mark up for those seats instead making someone buy 2 seats.

Two things in this case: First look at the picture and tell me why a guy like that needs to buy 2 tickets. He fits in the seat just fine.LAME.
Second thing is the freaking flight is from Burbank to Oakland. How long is that flight?? Really. Boot a guy for a flight that short.LAME.

I guess we'll be on the opposite sides of this statement, too. :(

I don't know about this particular situation involving Kevin Smith, but every passenger is paying for an allotted amount of space on a plane. If someone is going to encroach on the space that I payed for, then they should be paying for more space.

This is also why you are only allowed so much carry-on (rant on that for another thread :)). Can you imagine what people would self-police as "carry-on size" if there weren't state rules.

I don't know if SWA handled the situation properly, but people who cannot fit in one seat should buy two. Hell, I'll even let them board first to get the pick of the litter.

Well in this case just look at Kevin Smith and tell me he would bother you sitting next to him. HE FITS IN THAT SEAT JUST FINE.
He may annoy you by talking but he fits.

The rule is in place for extreme over weight people and not a guy like this.
Fat people should have rights and I said they should pay a mark up but buying 2 tickets is insane.

They used to have a Smoking and a non smoking section on planes back in the day WITH NO MARK UP so why can't they do something for the 1 or 2 people at most on plane who are over weight????
It was ok to accomodate that bad habit but not a eating one. Just another sign of the change in times.

On one side - I understand Southwest's position on obese ticket holders buying two seats.

On the the other side - if you want to avoid the problem of being squeezed in by other passengers, you should buy a 1st class ticket on another airline......

That's complete bullshit.

I buy a coach on any airline, and I expect to have a seat to myself.

If they want to charge me for half a seat, then I won't bitch. I'll just use your arm-flap as a pillow.

keygray - he does not look too large by any means. I was only commenting on the rule, in general. he may just be bottom heavy :SIB

He normally buys 2 seats according to southwest, so he sure the heck isn't small..........

Well that picture is a different story but he just doesnt look that big in his posted picture in the seat.

Also I am not sure what good buying 2 seats on SWA airlines does on a crowded flight. They will pack as many standbys on a flight as possible and they will use the seat he purchased unless he speaks up. YOU CAN GUARANTEE THAT.

oh great, fat people and planes.

have you read SWA's policy on oversized people and what happens?

Or do you just read a headline and go spouting off?

I'm guessing you haven't been in a USA airport anytime lately huh?

The rare EXTREME over weight flier.

Like Kevin Smith said "more people in america are fat than skinny." so why doesn't the airline adjust?

Actually no I have not been flying much of late and I know it is an issue, but really how hard is it to have a row or two for people that require this(allow 2 people in the row instead of 3.
It solves two problems:
1. They pay a mark up instead of buy 2 tickets.
2. They don't bother any other passenger who is not overweight.

It is too simple I guess. Again they had no problem working with people who smoked so how is this any different?

Maybe we can get another Rosa Parks out of it.
Put the fat people to the back of the plane and someday a chubby will refuse to go back there.

Here is a picture of Smith earlier this month:

Baggy ass clothes make him look wide but I don't think he is so overweight to require 2 seats.
The picture in the original post tells me he is not spilling into another persons seat.

Bad call booting him.

How about charging them a child's fare for the 2nd seat or something. Making them pay full is a RIP OFF.

2+ yrs old on SW is fullprice so really there's no difference.

He maybe wearing baggy clothes but he's a pretty damn wide guy. You can't tell because he's next to the 8ft wide podium but look at pics of him next to other people.

Maybe the airlines should make the seats smaller so anyone over 170 has to buy 2 seats.

I would much rather sit next to a Kevin Smith size guy than a lady with a screaming child. They should have to buy the extra seat so that nobody is subjected to sitting next to them.

Does a buffet charge more for a fat guy to eat at it than a skinny guy?

I TOTALLY agree with you on the screaming child. Unfortunatley I've been on both sides, having a screaming child and on the way home from Vegas after 3 days of no sleep with a screaming child near me. The problem with the child is that even if they have an extra seat it's not going to change how it affects the people next to them. You can be several seats away and it doesn't help.

Kevin, you're a smart gut but comparing a buffet to a plane seat is not even close.
