Wow, another childish blow-up. I have to think UT officials are second-guessing the hire........

Kiffin has 'not fired anybody' but Fulmer gets a secretary
Coach was upset after waiting 25 minutes for ride at airport

Despite what you might read in Sports Illustrated, new Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin hasn't contributed to Knoxville's unemployment rate.

"He has not fired anybody," UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said Thursday afternoon. "If he said he has fired somebody, that's not true. I don't know if he said it from a standpoint of making a point that 'We've got to get this right.' But he didn't fire anybody.

"You can't just fire anybody at Tennessee, particularly when you're talking about non-contract employees. There's a process."

Kiffin said in a Sports Illustrated story this week that one person had been fired and others had been "run off."

After returning to Knoxville following the birth of his son last month, Kiffin had arranged for someone to pick him up at the airport, according to the article. His driver was 25 minutes late.

"I came back and within five minutes I'd fired the guy who was in charge of the guy who'd been sent to pick me up," Kiffin said in the story. "Here's the point: We need to win. That's 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport."

Tiffany Carpenter, UT's director of public relations, said Kiffin had a change of heart about the firing.

"The (Sports Illustrated) interview happened the day of the incident," Carpenter said. "At that time, (Kiffin) wanted to fire that individual but after further thought and discussions decided that was not in the best interest of Tennessee."

Attempts to reach Kiffin were unsuccessful.

Hamilton said he knew Kiffin was upset after he arrived at the airport.

"He was ready to go to work and there wasn't anybody to pick him up," Hamilton said.

"I think that he's trying to set the tone for the kind of program he wants to run. I'm very much OK with him letting folks know that he's going to run a very disciplined program and there will be high expectations in terms of those who work in the football program, and letting the fans know that (Kiffin and his staff) are coming to work every day and giving their all to the job."

Based on the Sports Illustrated article, Kiffin wasn't pleased with the work ethic of the support staff he inherited from Phillip Fulmer.

"You can't count the number of people we've run off because they couldn't keep up, and I'm including secretaries," Kiffin said in the story. "They had to go because they weren't going to make it, and they knew it."

Although no secretaries were fired, two secretaries have left the football office, according to Hamilton. He said one secretary retired, and another was reassigned.

Mary Jo Fox, who was the administrative services assistant to Fulmer, has been reassigned. Hamilton said she will serve as Fulmer's secretary in his office in Stokely Athletic Center.

Fulmer requested the office space a couple of weeks ago after being promised the privilege by Hamilton when Fulmer was forced to resign. Fulmer is not employed by the UT Athletic Department.

Cie Grant,

I read that earlier. I knew who his dad was, but was not real familiar with him until the Raiders thing blew up. I remember the interview he did the day after Davis fired him and remember thinking how some team out there was going to have the good fortune of getting a dynamic, young coach. He is Dynamic alright, LOL...I know that Tennessee has a proud tradition. I think his escapades really shorten the time he has to turn things around. I hope his dad is not 25 minutes late to practice one day or things could get tense in the Kiffin household...

UT reports Lane Kiffin for third violation
By Bryan Mullen ? THE TENNESSEAN ? February 13, 2009

KNOXVILLE ? University of Tennessee officials reported another recruiting violation by football Coach Lane Kiffin on Friday, this time involving the top-rated high school player in the country.

It is the third time in 19 days that UT has reported a secondary violation that Kiffin has committed.

During an interview on Knoxville radio station WNML on Friday, Kiffin violated an NCAA rule by describing a specific recruit?s ability and naming him. The recruit, Bryce Brown, a running back from Wichita, Kansas, is rated as the No. 1 recruit in the nation by Rivals.com. He is scheduled to be in Knoxville for an official visit this weekend.

According to the NCAA, a coach is allowed to confirm to the media that a specific player is being recruited by that school, but the coach is not allowed to comment about the recruit?s ability. During the interview, Kiffin lumped Brown into a group of athletes he called ?great players.?

UT spokesperson Tiffany Carpenter said the violation will be filed with the NCAA and the Southeastern Conference. Kiffin was unavailable for comment.

During the radio interview, Kiffin was asked a general question about being concerned that some highly touted recruits have waited until after Signing Day (Feb. 4) to sign with a school. Kiffin was also reminded by the host, Dave Hooker, that coaches are not allowed to comment on specific players that UT is still recruiting, but Kiffin still named Brown.

?I really don?t like the direction it?s going,? Kiffin said on the show. ?Once very talented players do things, it becomes the cool thing to do, and then the next guy does it. And more and more guys do it. I think what?s going to happen is you?re going to see, you know, great players like Bryce Brown are doing it now.?

The first two violations came late last month. Kiffin and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron used a fog machine that a recruit ran through during an official visit. The other involved recruits participating in a mock press conference inside Neyland Stadium during a recruiting weekend. By NCAA rule, prospects are not allowed to participate in game-like simulations during visits.

The NCAA rarely levies penalties on self-reported secondary violations, according to NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osburn.

he was that pissed about 25 minutes out of his life.

Come on man , pull out a hundred and get the first limo you can find. Instead he pouts like a baby about how other coachs are going to get ahead of him in work.

I take back what I said. This guy is not going to make it very long.

2 yrs tops .

somewhere over the rainbow
hope we can revisit this thread in 3 years...i think you're all wrong. not sure what will happen this year, but he'll be successful at TN in the long run.

he's arrogant, no doubt about it, but i think he's a smart, great coach and he'll back it up.

just my opinion...probably worth fading if you can find a bet...

I doubt hes there in 3 years

He is a moron and may not be able to coach (time will tell), but the #1 player in the country committed a few hours ago in Bryce Brown who is following David Oku committing a week ago. They are two good looking running backs. It will be interesting to see what he does with them...

Yea, I heard the same thing for several months until they signed and seen many people say they did not want them to sign at their school because of it. The truth is though that neither has been in any trouble. All things considered, I would rather have them than not after watching both on video and I am not a Tennessee fan...I'd take my chances with either/both of them...

Ole ballcoach calls out Kiff

Ole ballcoach calls out Kiff

Spurrier confronts Kiffin at SEC meetings

May 26, 2009 7:50 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Chris Low

DESTIN, Fla. -- Leave it to the Head Ball Coach to steal the show.

The fireworks that some were anticipating Tuesday when the football coaches all gathered at the SEC spring meetings never really materialized, but there was a classic exchange involving South Carolina's Steve Spurrier and Tennessee's Lane Kiffin.

As the coaches were filtering out of their meeting room and waiting for an elevator, a reporter informed Spurrier that Kiffin, albeit jokingly, had said earlier in the day that he never got an apology from Spurrier about questioning whether Kiffin had taken the recruiting test.

Spurrier sighed, slumped his shoulders and then wheeled around toward Kiffin, who was standing about five feet away waiting on the same elevator.

"I didn't accuse you of cheating," said an animated Spurrier, motioning toward Kiffin, who stood there with his face reddening by the second.

"What I said was, 'Was it permissible to call recruits before you were announced head coach and had taken the [recruiting] test?' Now, you took the test online, and I didn't even know you could do that. I thought you had to take the test on campus ... and then start calling [recruits]."

Kiffin never fired back, but Arkansas' Bobby Petrino walked by and quipped, "You're not getting me in the middle of this one."

Kentucky's Rich Brooks and Auburn's Gene Chizik were also standing there waiting on the elevator, and they all -- including Spurrier and Kiffin -- got on together. There were several reporters in the area, all of whom broke out into laughter.

Before the elevator doors closed, Spurrier piped up one more time and said in his familiar tone, "I never said you broke any rules. I just said, 'Was it permissible to make any calls?'"

Something tells me Petrino had it right earlier in the day when he joked that maybe Ultimate Fighting was the best way to settle all the recent sniping among the coaches.

"If you want to quit talking about it, just jump into that ring," Petrino said. "That would be fun That would sell some tickets."

One thing's for sure: SEC commissioner Mike Slive's heart-to-heart chat with the coaches and athletic directors Wednesday about keeping the focus on the field ought to be interesting.

I'm pretty sure "Lane" will find out fairly soon the
difference between the SEC and the PAC 10.
