Just found some termites in the bedroom closet up to the attic. Anyone have any suggestion on how to get rid of termites? Should I do the research and do it myself or should I call a professional?

Are you sure they are termites? Could be carpenter ants. I wouldn't hesitate though they can cause a lot of damage. GL

If they are carpenter ants they are going to a lot more damage than the termites can time wise ether way get someone there tomorrow.

Pest control .com

Thermidor

Buddy of mine says that is what you want but you really need someone qualified with the right equipment. He said check around cause there are a lot of snakes in this field. He one time sprayed a strip mall i was in that had tons of carpenter ants. never saw them again for the next three years. Where they get ya is when they come back for the monthly spray. He only sprayed my place once. Good luck trying to get out of the monthly spray.

On a positive note, carpenter ants and termites do not co-exist. Carpenter ants eat termites. So, if you have carpenter ants, at least you wont have termites.

I'd stick with a nationally known company for this. Terminix is good. They're probably termites, being in Texas. If you can actually already see them where you did, you need to act fast. It's not cheap, but it will be even more expensive to do it down the line.

The terminix guy comes, checks the whole premises and lets you know IF you have termites. He actually scraped out a little part on the back lower part of my house, and I saw them running around. The evaluation is free. If there's a problem, then you can discuss treatment options and different costs.

Resident exterminator here
You need a professional
The fact that you have termites upstairs is bad
They come from the ground so that means they are probably in the wood from bottom to top of house
I know nighmare stories about Terminex---dont use them-- ask around and go with a company people trust
All that wood needs to be inspected and treated and your whole perimeter needs a treatment (trenching and pumping Termidor)or they will sell you a baiting system

I brought a few sample of the little critters to a biology teacher today. She varified that they are termites. I have been to Lowe's. They have chemicals that will kill termites on contact, but nothing to treat spots where you don't see them.

I am confused. kellyindallas said that Terminix is a good reputable company, but njsf25g have heard negative feedbacks about this same company.

I've asked a few people who have had their houses exterminated for termites. They've paid up to $2500 for treatment. I'm just wondering if I can buy some sort of kit from Home Depot or Lowe's to do it myself.

Thanks for any advice.

Cry, I know you WANT the Lowe's treatment to work like a professional's application, but it WON'T.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
as others said, DO NOT try it yourself. Because a full treatment requires professional knowledge of how houses built, experience of likely infestation points, expensive professional tools---from masonry drills to pesticide injector pumps (they could use many dozens of gallons) to soil treatment rods and so on...

If you ever plan to sell the house, or it is under mortage, then you have no option but to use a professional (and keep the paperwork). Also, purchance an ongoing service agreement.

contact your local extension service for professional and unbiased advice. Link here to A+M's page. Lotta resources online too, I'm sure. It pays to take your time. Termites work slowly, and taking a week to sort this all out is well worth it.

Did a visual inspection of my attic awhile ago. Found hundreds, possibly thousands, of clear transparent wings on top of the insulation, but no sight of any termites. Well, there were a few dead ones lying on the wooden floor of the attic. I don't know how long ago the termites shed their wings up there. I don't know what this means or what to make of it. Again, I didn't see any termites crawling anywhere.

I will call the professionals tomorrow.

An exterminator came today. He first toured the foundation and found no sign of termites. Then he saw a few shelter (dirt) tubes high up on the side of the garage above the washer and dryer. That was bad news he said. That means that these guys have been here for about 5 years. Anyway, to make the story short, he scraped off the dirt tubes, tapped on the wall, and found nothing. He said that they're not active, which means they're not there. I said how can that be? They flew in my house from the opening in the closet. He said they were seeking light. They fly to establish new colonies. They could very well have flown into the attic from anywhere outside. He said not to worry about it. The swarmers will die if they can't develope a colony. From the look of things, they won't be able to establish a new colony without access to water. There is no leakage anywhere. The dirt tubes we found must have been there from 5 years ago.

He shook my hand and told me to call him next April if I suspect anything.

I will call Terminix or Orkin on Monday to make sure.

Thanks for all the advice here at MadJack.
