Kelly with the Eagles was pretty fn bad...
Very few college Head Coaches to NFL Head Coaches excel in the NFL, Holtz never could get it together, Chip was power hungry and narrow minded evidenced by a quick fall and to the booth for ESPN then UCLA bit on his past success at Oregon. Bill O'Brien has a good mentor in Bills' chicks went from Penn St & probation to NFL but he got QBs crushed until Watson showed up and even Watson got hurt. Dick Vermeil did pretty good in the NFL in a few stints and in and out of the broadcast booth, Bill Walsh was a genius and never won a national championship in college but did well in the NFL and has a pretty good lineage trail too. Butch Davis was the last head coach to take the Browns to the playoffs. Barry Switzer didn't last and he and Jimmah Johnson clashed with Jerr but so does everyone else who wants more than Jerr will allow.
My guess is Cliff will be ok in the NFL. I don't buy he developed Mayfield because if Mayfield was that good he wouldn't have let him transfer to Oklahoma although Mahomes came in. Mahomes was a standout baseball prospect as well and not many colleges allow their QB to play college baseball, Mahomes was a rare breed in college and he's a rare breed in the NFL. Cliff will have to get some very good assistants and coordinators on the "D" side for sure and my guess is the team is in more than rebuild mode under Keim and they'll probably be doing some dealing for draft picks to get some linemen on the O-line for Rosen and some top skill guys at WRs, Fitz ain't any younger, Johnson has had a bad injury already and Petey is trade bait on "D". Cardinals usually make some decisions which backfire, and that's one reason they are not consistent and Bruce Arians left.
Bruce Arians is another case of a head coach who didn't do much in college as a head coach (Temple) but he did alright filling in for Pagano (who hasn't gotten a job yet) for the Colts w/a guy named Peyton Manning. Now he's going to try and build Tampon Bay back? HAH! They need some help on the O-Line for sure and a RB to carry the load and if I were them I would trade JW as well, not many teams will take him anyways but get what they can for him. The division his team is in is wide open anyhow.
McDaniels is waiting in the wings to run the Patriots? Ok. I hope he'll like the rebuild and life after Tommy boy.
LaFleur to Green Bay? That's a huge WOW!! Another reason GB is on the downswing in that division and in the NFL power indexes.
The only black coach that received any interviews has been on the down low, Eric Bienemy (Chiefs still playing) so he'll be talked about more after their season is done, along with former coach Jim Caldwell, so why aren't many minority coaches being talked about? Dungy stated he's not interested in coaching anymore in the NFL? I know the loss of his son and his family has weighed heavily on his decision, but man is this the time to get back in or what? That's a whole other discussion!
Good stuff BASON!
