Having my right knee cleaned up with a torn meniscus, no huge deal.

But here is the thing. They are offering me a choice of being awake with a nerve block so presumably I would be fully aware of the process with the ability to observe. Sounds kind of cool but I want to know if there is still some pain involved? if so I think being put all the way under sounds like a better choice. I don't know and all of my friend who have had a scope were all the way out during the surgery

.Anybody try this method ?

I would want general anesthesia for that as long as you are healthy. If you have health problems (like bad lungs or a bad heart) or you have had problems with anesthesia in the past, then I would think the block would be advisable.

Knee scopes are relatively easy procedures, but those ortho guys can be aggressive and brutal, and I wouldn't want to be awake for it.

there shouldn't be any pain involved if you do local unless your anasthesiologist went to the same school as Dr. Nick Riviera

As a non-surgeon, non-anesthesiologist physician, I would definitely recommend avoiding GA and getting the block. You should never take the risks associated with general anesthesia unless absolutely necessary. You should not experience any pain with a properly executed nerve block.

Appreciate the responses, will do some research and speak with face to face with the anesthesiologist. I think it would be beyond cool to observe your own surgery and will go that route if he or she is comfortable with the idea.

had torn cartilage surgery being knocked out and then 10 yrs later had the same surgery on the other knee and I was wide awake. You will be sore after the surgery but its not painful just sore.

I would rather be awake than out. I even got to watch the surgery on a monitor. Dr talked to me the whole time.

Thats what I'm wishing for. And besides that, they can't make fun of my dick or something while I'm still awake. :0074

The general anesthesia is a way better buzz though. I have had both, nerve block twice, GA the five times. In truth I don't think I would have been able to have just a nerve block other than those two times due to the extensive nature of the surgery. I prefer the general but I have been cut on a lot so I may not be the best person to ask. Funny story though, when I went in to have my knee scoped I said something similar about dick jokes to my doctor who has cut on me quite a few times, he told me they ran out of them long ago. Now they just reminisce about their favorites.

If its up to me I would stay awake but that's just me. When they put me to sleep they put me in a holding room with like 6 other people who were about to go for surgery. My eyes were closed but couldn't open them. I wasn't all the way out but you could hear people and other patients talking.I couldn't lift my head up or anything it was like I was paralyzed but still half awake with my eyes closed if that makes sense. Just a weird feeling.

This will be my 4th knee since '85 but the first time I've been offered the local or nerve block by a surgeon. He's a younger guy who's really in touch with the methods of modern medicine. I like and trust him a lot. My goal is to be able to golf 5 days post surgery and he says it's not likely but possible if I push it. .:0074
