LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Los Angeles Times has had about 1,000 readers cancel subscriptions and been "flooded" with angry letters, calls and e-mail protesting its coverage of Arnold Schwarzenegger (news)'s alleged sexual harassment of women, it reported on Sunday.

The newspaper has detailed allegations by a total of 15 women in three front-page stories since Thursday against Schwarzenegger, touching off a controversy that has consumed the final days of Tuesday's recall election in which the actor and former Mr. Universe remains the front-runner.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, has apologized in a general way for his behavior toward women, while denying the most recent allegations carried by the newspaper in stories on Saturday and Sunday.

He has also accused the Los Angeles Times of working with embattled incumbent Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites) in a concerted campaign of "puke politics" aimed at derailing his candidacy.

The newspaper has had about 1,000 readers cancel subscriptions and received some 400 phone calls critical of its coverage, "many angry, some profane," as of Saturday, it reported in a story carried inside Sunday's newspaper.

Readers have complained the newspaper singled out Schwarzenegger for critical coverage because of a liberal bias or ran its stories too close to Tuesday's vote, it said.

One reader, Bill Agee, said the newspapers stories were dropped "like stink bombs at the last moment to ruin the momentum (Schwarzenegger's) got."

Los Angeles Times Editor John Carrol was quoted defending the timing of the Schwarzenegger stories, citing the compressed schedule of the recall campaign and the newspaper's critical coverage of both Davis and independent candidate Arianna Huffington, now campaigning against Schwarzenegger.

The newspaper had been working on its initial front-page story for seven weeks and did not receive tips from any of Schwarzenegger's political foes, Carrol said.

Mostly, the newspaper's reporters had just made "cold calls" to people working in the film industry and women listed in the credits of movies starring Schwarzenegger, he said.

On the Schwarzenegger campaign, meanwhile, anger at the state's largest newspaper has become a rallying cry.

Before a Schwarzenegger rally in Modesto, California on Saturday, one speaker, Rob Johnson (news), a radio host, urged the crowd to make the media feel welcome.

"Except for the guy. ... Who's the guy with

But when 15 woman come forward. Well I could say 10 are lieing. So 5 maybe are telling the truth. They have any of these take the big boy on. Well get ready for recall number 2 if he would win. Not sure why a actor such as this should be a govenor. But lateley our politics are full of actors and liers so he will be in good company.

such dirty politics being played now by a desparate Davis.

Who cares that Arnold played a little grab ass. Hell we lived through Billy Clinton getting his knob polished repeatedly in the Oval office. Its nothing really. Sex and politics go hand in hand.

I will say one thing. If Arnold is elected Tuesday and I believe that he will be, he will turn California on its ear and make things much better.

Of course it cant get any worse. Thats why Arnold is in this in the first place. It cant get any worse. Arnold has no where to go but up with the problems out there.

We should remember that little 23 year old wanted to give BJ's. These woman may not like being grabbed in the ass. Im not saying they are all telling the truth. But again if any are. They should come forward now. He's no longer trying to be a actor. Acting/Govenor two differant things. I also believe if true instead of talking about it take him to court. Or shut up.

The irony is so many women and none said squat 20 years ago and they all come forward now,not when he started running, but perfectly timed. I have no doubt, he as most in hollywood would be quilty but at least he did not lie about it to the people, under oath ect. Not sure Slick admitted it after DNA.
Believe there were several that complained about unwanted moves he put on them, but they like in Arnolds case should have come forward at the time not years later.
From this thread and LA times I find it somewhat ironic that liberals go off on hand groping but jabbing the ole cuban is fine, also appears they can respect a liar but not someone that admits its---and as I said before these same womens org that are throwing a fit bout supposed groping 20 years ago support Slick as did Hilliary--and they wonder why the ave american has had their fill of their left wing BS
i Don't think there is a good candidate on the ticket but believe we'll find the californians show they prefer to have their ass groped by Arnold rather than their wallet by Davis. Odds @ sportsbooks indicate that also.

Chanman what the fu?? you talking about you lost me. I cant believe how many times Clinton is brought up to defend someone else frome the right. There are whores for a reason. They like it and some really like the pay. What the hell any of it has to do with a ass grabber I dont know. And DTB the timeing is way off. They estmated over 2 million absentee votes had been in before this story hit. Is the story wrong. I don't know. We shall find out. I do know he apologized for some reason. Maybe his memory is better then he wants us to believe. As for folks like Clinton and Nixon and Bush. There is no excuse for there lies.

So its alright to go w/ a Hooker, just don't grab her azz unless she says its O.K.

I still say...IMHO if Arnold won and turned the Cali deficit/economy around ppl wouldn't care about his personal life. Remind you of anyone?

Hope you see my point djv- no harm intended :thumb:

The Times should be chastized for pretending that this is a new story. Basically the same story appeared in Premiere magazine several years back. The fact that they waited until just before the election to rehash a story that is years old should make people wonder. Another one came out today with her attorney, Gloria Allred, at her side. Believe me, if Arnold groped this woman, I pity the man. This woman was so ugly she would gag a maggot. The national media has picked up on this - there will be a few 60 Minute type shows that will run with it.

However the election goes, don't expect any rapid change. I will bet dollars to donuts that if Arnold wins, some group will run as fast as their feet will carry them and get the 9th Ciruit to overturn the election or some such bs. It is bound to happen - guaranteed. Such is life in California.

It looks like Clinton was a trailblazer. The Right tried to hang him for dodging the draft but when Dubya did it was ok. They tried to hang him for inhaleing or not but when Dubya snorted or not it was ok. Then they tried to get him for treating woman badly and now that Arnold does it it's ok. That tells me that you Rightwingers are just a few drumbeats behind the rest of us!
The only thing that bothers me about Arnold is that no one knows where he stands on anything. Except apologies, he is all for them.

uhhhh....no one is defending Arnie.....especially right-wingers

BUT...Clinton's lies were ongoing....and lots of people feel that loyalty is a virtuous.....and if one can't be loyal to one's wife, how could he be loyal to his country?

Arnie's stuff seems like a last minute ploy (Gray Davis has never done anything like this before has he?).....albeit most people believe at least some of the accusations are true, 20-30 years ago is a lot different than the present as it was in Clinton's case.....a case when the betrayel was ongoing.....

can't just blanketly compare all situations....lots of differences....

i'm no fan of Arnie, and California is a great example of what happens when the socialists/communists get control of a state....no one in their right mind would move a business there...

i could care less what happens....i say let California go down....let Gray continue to let the crooks run the state and make it an example of what will happen if we let the socialists control our country....lets see what happens when policy after policy inhibiting any kind of productivity ruins a state before our nation gets hit with the same bug

"The Right tried to hang him for dodging the draft but when Dubya did it was ok."

do you consider protesting in Europe equal to National guard??

"They tried to hang him for inhaleing or not but when Dubya snorted or not it was ok"

Would someone copy article here on his cocaine ordeal or is it just left wing spin. I scan about 15 papers daily have done search and have yet to find anything?

"Then they tried to get him for treating woman badly and now that Arnold does it it's ok."

How many civil suits have been filed against Arnold.?Evidently you and DJV are the only 2 that think B-J's and cigar escapes in office are same as grab ass 20 years ago--err and to that you can add all the left wing women org as they campaign for Slick and now think grab ass is horrific. Makes one wonder.

The thinking trend of the left is absolutely mindboggeling to me.

Now I might agree on Aronld not being best candidate and frankly I don't care who wins, but I am thouroughly enjoying seeing "The People" boot some corrupt SOB out of office.
Maybe the Gov of Arizona will take notice as "the People" there are on an inti-illegal alien campaign and she is doing everything possible to avoid and for the record there are two republican delegates right in there with her and they deserve the same.
