Perkins to sit out Game Five for Celtics
(TICKER) ?The Boston Celtics will be without starting center Kendrick Perkins when they look to wrap up their league-best 17th title in Game Five of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.
The Celtics? 6-10 center, Perkins departed Thursday?s Game Four with 9:35 left in the third quarter with a left shoulder strain. He suffered the injury when he fouled Lamar Odom while the Lakers forward was making a hard drive to the basket and immediately grabbed his shoulder before being escorted to the locker room.
The hard-nosed Perkins will be replaced by either second-year forward Leon Powe or veteran P.J. Brown, according to coach Doc Rivers.
?We?ll go with either Leon or P.J. ? we?ll wait and see,? Rivers said. ?But you know, we kind of thought he was going to play after (Saturday), and he called me (Sunday morning) and he said there?s just no chance of it.
?We?re prepared for it. We can go a lot of ways. We can go small, but we?re going to start out big.?
Boston point guard Rajon Rondo has a bone bruise on his left ankle that he suffered in Game Three but will be in the starting lineup on Sunday. He played only 17 minutes on Thursday and spent the final 19 minutes of the game on the bench.
Perkins and Rondo did not finish finish Game Four on Thursday, when the Celtics rallied from a 24-point deficit for a stunning 97-91 victory. Paul Pierce also aggravated his right knee that he strained in Game One and twisted an ankle in the thrilling win.
Pierce, who left Game One in the third period before returning to score 15 points in the quarter, hit the court hard late in the fourth period on Thursday. Rivers said Pierce tweaked his knee and ankle.
If the Celtics do not win Sunday, the series shifts back to Boston for Game Six on Tuesday. Game Seven would be played on Thursday, also in Boston.
