Lakers stir pot, try to chew up Nuggets

It turned out to be true; Kobe Bryant of the Lakers really does have teammates that want to win and are willing to put forth the effort to do so. Because Kobe finally was comforted with company, Los Angeles is within one game of return trip to NBA Finals, though not without a little controversy along the way, which makes for good playoff fodder.

An anonymous member of the Denver Nuggets told the Denver Post, "The Lakers paid $50,000 to win that game," he said. "They got their money's worth." He was referring to 25 grand in fines David Stern?s minions handed out to coach Phil Jackson and the Lakers organization for comments after Game 4.

Denver?s George Karl lamented essentially, the squeaky wheel gets taken care of and the Lakers got the benefit of calls for critical Game 5. Evidently Karl has no sense of history, since this coaching showmanship has gone on since Eddie Gottlieb?s Philadelphia Warriors defeated the Chicago Staggs to win first ever NBA title in 1947.

Having watched the entire game with no sound (don?t ask, just trust it made sense to me), I never got the sense the officiating was one-sided. I did however take note that Denver stopped taking the ball to the rim in the fourth quarter and was 5 for 21 shooting in last 12 minutes. I also noticed the strong interior defense of Denver completely fell apart in the fourth quarter, as the Lakers ran screens to set up isolation plays and scored six baskets that I recall within three feet of basket.

The first 17 minutes of the game was played like any regular season game, as neither team was emotionally involved, until both teams had manufactured exciting dunks, which revved up the crowd and the emotions of players.

Lamar Odom, showed why he can be the difference between L.A. being among the best teams, to NBA champs when he adds 19 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. Derek Fisher tossed in a dozen points and though he saw limited minutes, Andrew Bynum contributed when on the floor. In fact, the Lakers bench outscored the Denver reserves 34-26, which is telling, with final margin of victory nine points.

Denver is 17-7 ATS revenging a road loss and is backed into corner. The Nuggets never matched the same intensity they had the first two games in La-La Land, even as they built seven-point lead midway thru the third quarter. This was proven as they had no answer to blunt Lakers rush that saw them run off 23 of next 28 points to wrestle control of contest. The Lakers finally challenged Karl?s troops with unfamiliar style, playing intense defense.

The Lakers enter Game 6 as five-point underdogs and are 8-3 ATS when Sportsbook.com or another oddsmaker places them in that position. Only one game has exceeded the total in West Finals and Los Angeles is 9-1 UNDER in conference finals. Denver is 7-0 against the number off a straight up loss and is 8-1 ATS as home favorites. Of the last 12 games the Nuggets have played against winning teams, 10 have gone UNDER the number.

It?s do-or-die for Carmelo Anthony and mates, and as the Lakers have shown, they don?t necessarily have the killer instinct to polish off opponent. If should be quite an atmosphere at the Pepsi Center, with Denver trying to avoid falling to 3-11 ATS when trailing in playoff series and head back to downtown Los Angeles for Sunday showdown.

Los Angeles at Denver, Game 6

Los Angeles at Denver, Game 6

Los Angeles at Denver, Game 6

The NBA Western Conference Finals enters the sixth game of this physical series, with Los Angeles holding a 3-2 advantage. The Lakers have never lost a best-of-seven series that was tied at 2-2 after winning a Game 5 since dropping the 1969 NBA Finals against Boston. But Game 6 is another matter entirely.

The Los Angeles-Denver series can almost be broken down into ?A Tale of Two Cities? between the top-two seeded teams in the Western Conference.

Top-seeded Los Angeles (76-23 straight up, 51-48 against the spread) is a star-studded franchise that has the second-most NBA championships (14), and leads in NBA Finals appearances (29). The Lakers advanced to the NBA Finals last season before ultimately falling to the Boston Celtics. Los Angeles hasn?t been able to raise a banner at Staples Center since winning three championships in a row from 2000-2002.

Denver, the second-seeded team, has never advanced to the NBA Finals since joining the league in 1976. The Nuggets advanced to the NBA Playoffs last year as an eighth-seed before getting swept by the Lakers in the first round. Denver?s fortunes for this season improved dramatically when they traded controversial guard Allen Iverson for veteran point guard Chauncey Billups.

The Nuggets (64-33 SU, 58-38 ATS) equaled the most wins in franchise history this season, marking the first time in franchise history that they recorded back-to-back 50-win seasons. This was the first year that Denver enjoyed home-court advantage in a playoff series since 1988, and is now playing in its first Western Conference Finals since 1985.

Caesars Palace installed Denver as a five-point ?chalk? in Friday?s Game 6, with the total listed at 209. ESPN will provide coverage of this contest beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET from Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.

Los Angeles and Denver have alternated SU wins and losses in this series after the Lakers prevailed in Wednesday?s Game 5 as a six-point home favorite, 103-94. The combined 197 points failed to eclipse the 209 ?-point closing total, helping the ?under? improve to 4-1 in this series. Los Angeles has covered two of the past three games in this series, but Denver covered the first two matachups.

The Lakers used a fourth-quarter surge to prevail, improving to 12-3 SU their last 15 games against the Nuggets. The game was tied after each of the first three quarters before Los Angeles went on a 21-3 surge spanning the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth.

Coach Phil Jackson?s team was outrebounded by Denver, 43-42, but prevailed by shooting a solid 49 percent (37-of-76) from the field. Shooting guard Kobe Bryant paced the offense with 22 points and eight assists, while power forward Lamar Odom added 19 and 14 rebounds.

Denver connected at a 39-percent clip (32-of-83) from the field, and 29 percent (7-of-24) from behind the arc. Small forward Carmelo Anthony led all scorers with 31 points on 9-of-23 shooting, while Billups contributed 12 and five assists.

Los Angeles is 32-16 SU and 26-22 ATS away from home, with the ?under? going 25-22. The Lakers have been winning their road endeavors this season by an average score of 104-100. Los Angeles took Game 3 of this series Saturday as a 3 ?-point road underdog, 103-97, while the combined 200 points failed to eclipse the 212 ?-point closing total.

Denver maintains a stellar 40-9 SU and 31-17 ATS home ledger, with the ?over? going 27-21. The Nuggets have been winning their games at Pepsi Center this season by an average score of 108-100. Denver throttled the Lakers in Game 4 of this series Monday as a 4 ?-point home ?chalk,? 120-101, while the combined 221 points went ?over? the 209-point closing total.

Neither team is reporting any players as ?questionable? or ?doubtful? for this contest.

L.A. Lakers at Denver Nuggets

L.A. Lakers at Denver Nuggets

L.A. Lakers at Denver Nuggets

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-5, 208.5)

The betting line

The Nuggets opened as 6-point favorites, but that line was quickly adjusted to -5. It's the most that Denver has been favored by in this series after laying 4.5 points in Game 4.

The total continues to fluctuate between 208 and 209 points. Four of the first five games in this series have played under and the oddsmakers have adjusted accordingly. Game 1 featured a posted total of 214.

Early money has come in on the Lakers and the over. That's been a constant trend throughout this series.

A little help from his friends

Kobe Bryant didn't have to carry his team to victory in Game 5. His supporting cast finally showed up, with four other players scoring in double figures. Kobe himself scored only 22, his lowest total of the series, but also dished out a series high eight assists.

Kobe said after the game it was all a part of his plan.

?It was a big gamble for me coming in, but I wanted to change my approach this game and be more of a decoy,? Bryant said. ?The past couple games they really were loading to my side and I figured I could be a decoy and try to give chances to my teammates.?
Whether it was his call or not, the gameplan worked. Although to the Nuggets? credit, they were tied entering the fourth quarter.

Bouncing back

The Nuggets have been an excellent bounce-back team in these playoffs, posting a perfect 4-0 record (both straight-up and against the number) after a loss.

Going back to the end of the regular season, they've won and covered in eight consecutive games following a loss.

Carmelo Anthony is confident that his team can keep that streak intact and force a seventh and deciding game.

?We?re excited about this. We?re going home. We got a chance to win at home and see what happens in Game 7.?

Foul trouble

The officials have been major players in the direction of this series - which is nothing new when it comes to the NBA.

Nuggets head coach George Karl wasn't happy with the way Game 5 was called, this one game after Lakers boss Phil Jackson was fined for speaking out about the Game 4 officiating.

?Every player in my locker room is frustrated, from guards to big guys. Gasol goes after at least 20 jump shots, 20 shots to the rim and gets one foul; our big guys have 16. Nene has six fouls, three or four of them don?t exist.?

It remains to be seen whether Karl's comments will have any effect, but the Nuggets certainly can't afford to have Chauncey Billups and Nene in early foul trouble again on Friday.

Facing elimination

The Lakers failed to close out the Rockets on the road in Game 6 last round.

Road teams are just 4-5 straight up in series clinchers prior to Game 7 in the playoffs to date.

Throw in the fact that the Nuggets are 40-9 SU at home this season, including 7-1 in the playoffs, and you have to like their chances of forcing a seventh game.

The question is - can they cover the number?

Karl won't rein in his Nuggets now

Karl won't rein in his Nuggets now

Karl won't rein in his Nuggets now

-To make the NBA Finals for the first time - and bring their tattoos, athleticism and exuberance to the biggest stage of all - the upstart Denver Nuggets must win two games in a 48-hour span against a savvy Los Angeles Lakers team that is shooting for its 30th Finals appearance.

Oh, and L.A. hasn't lost back-to-back games since March.

The Nuggets might very well be the better team in the Western Conference finals, with a deeper bench, more muscle and better health than the tired, injured and often disjointed Lakers. But they also tend to implode at the worst times.

There's the taunting after big shots, the complaining after calls and the botched inbounds passes that cost them Games 1 and 3 and a chance at brooming the Lakers right out of the playoffs.

Now, they're one loss away from summer vacation.

''For most of the series, we outplayed them for most stretches of the game,'' Chauncey Billups said. ''We just couldn't get over the hump in the fourth quarter in a few different situations.''

Nor can they get out of their own way at times.

Denver has committed 11 technical fouls in this series and defensive stud Dahntay Jones is one more flagrant-1 foul away from a suspension.

Coach George Karl said he won't rein in his players for Game 6 in Friday night in Denver, however.

''You guys are almost saying you've got to have savvy and poise to be a championship team,'' Karl told reporters Thursday. ''I mean, you think the Detroit Pistons have the poise that the San Antonio Spurs have? No, I mean there's a different way of handling emotional, passionate, intense players. We have some guys who are emotional. Maybe a little too emotional. But for me, I'm not going to tell them to stop that because I think that stops them from becoming a competitor.

''Right now, we're competing on the best stage on a pretty good level. I think the Lakers know we're there.''

The Lakers have plenty of their own problems, inconsistency among them, but in Game 5, they showed they're not always so soft in the middle and they don't have to be a one-man band, either.

The Lakers finally discovered ways to get more balanced play, especially from their bigs.

''That's what the conversation has been about this entire postseason, our team, our potential and our capabilities,'' Derek Fisher said. ''But how do we, as a group, open that space to be what we can be? ... It's possible something clicked for us as a group last night against this team.

''We may have found some things we can do that allows us to attack them from everywhere. We feel we can't be beat when everybody's getting a chance to play.''

Kobe Bryant lured double coverage then passed to his teammates with Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol doing the damage inside in the fourth quarter as the Lakers capped a 23-5 run and cruised to a 103-94 win Wednesday night.

''We've had stretches where we've played excellent defense,'' Bryant said, ''but the competition we're facing with this Denver Nuggets team is unlike anything we've ever seen. They have so many scorers, they have an inside presence. So ... I'm very proud of how we performed in that stretch.''

Odom's 19 points and 14 rebounds were certainly the biggest reasons the Lakers reversed their disparity in points in the paint and grabs off the glass from Game 4.

Karl thinks Lakers coach Phil Jackson's rant helped, too.

Although it drew $50,000 in fines, Jackson's complaints about the officiating in Denver paid off in the Lakers' 16-7 advantage at the line in the fourth quarter, Karl suggested.

So, Karl took his own crack at the crew, suggesting Nene fouled out thanks to three or four phantom fouls and questioning how Gasol (one foul) could have played such a clean but active game.

On Thursday Karl insisted he wasn't blaming the officials for Denver's demise, but he took another shot at them when saying some of his younger players were letting the officiating get under their collective skin.

''We're hoping and we believe that the officiating won't be a problem,'' Karl said. ''When you're getting hit in the back of the head, knocked on your (backside), you're human beings; you react to people of authority. The referees are the ones that have the authority and control the game the way they want to control it.''

Bryant has been blunt about the Lakers' fatigue factor in this series, and he and Gasol each played 45 minutes in Game 5. But Bryant said he's fine, suggesting he'll ''get plenty of rest when I'm on a beach in Cabo.''

The Nuggets would love nothing more than to help him book that trip by next week.

Bettors siding with over in Lakers-Nuggets Game 6

Los Angeles Lakers (76-23 SU, 50-48 ATS) at Denver Nuggets (64-33 SU, 58-38 ATS)

Line/Total: We opened the Nuggets at -6, but went to 5.5 with the majority of the money on the Lakers. So far about 55 percent of the money is on the Lakers, but only a small portion was at +6 as we moved off 6 pretty quickly. We moved quickly because of our uncertainty of how the public would react to our opening number. We saw a surge when we opened, hence the quick move and since then have booked some great two-way action at 5.5.

As for the total, we opened 208.5 and with 75 percent of the early money on the over, we've gone to 209.

Series Price: The Lakers took firm control of this series with their Game 5 win and will have a chance to close out the series tonight. With the Lakers up 3-2, we've installed them as -400 favorites to win this series. Interesting note, the Lakers are now the favorite to win the NBA Championship at -110.

Key Injuries: No significant injuries to report.

Prop of the Game: Lamar Odom (Lakers) Total Points - 11

Odom is off his best game since the Lakers opening round matchup vs. the Jazz. In that series, against a smaller and weaker front line, Odom averaged nearly 18 points and 11 rebounds a game. Since then, it's been a struggle for him. He's only scored more than 10 points twice (Once vs. Houston and in his last game vs. the Nuggets in which he scored 19 points and grabed 14 rebounds). Odom averaged 11 points during the regular season and 11.5 points in the playoffs.

Comments: The Lakers have failed to cover after a win in their last four games. The Nuggets have been great in the playoffs vs. the spread, going 13-2 ATS. But they are only 1-2 ATS in their last three playoff games vs. the Lakers.

This is the Nuggets first elimination game. It will be interesting to see how they respond in a do-or-die situation. The Lakers have the luxury of a Game 7 at home in case they lose this game in Denver. But they would like nothing more than to end this series and get back to the NBA Finals for the second consecutive year.

Friday's best NBA bet

Friday's best NBA bet

Friday's best NBA bet

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-5.5, 208)

The Lakers return to Denver with a chance to eliminate the Nuggets and move on to the NBA Finals. Los Angeles took Game 5 at the Staples Center Wednesday night in large part because of a wakeup performance from Lamar Odom.

The normally passive player took more shot attempts than any other Laker (including Kobe Bryant) and finished with 19 points along with 14 rebounds and four blocks.

Odom has been criticized for his lack of production in this series even though he?s playing with a badly bruised and swollen back.

?You know, I won?t make no excuse about playing well or not playing well,? Odom told the Los Angeles Times. ?If my back is hurt or isn?t hurt, I?m just going to go out there and give it 100 percent.?

Odom wasn?t the only Laker proving he still had a pulse. Veteran point guard Derek Fisher, who has endured one of the worst shooting stretches of his career, scored 12 points.

Denver?s problem is the same as the Cavs. Late in the fourth quarter when they really need a hoop, the Nuggets don?t stick to their offensive system. Instead, Carmelo Anthony takes it on himself to go 1-on-5 against the Lakers.

For Melo and Co. to finish with a different result in Game 6, they?ll need a better effort from Chauncey Billups. The Nuggets are at their best when the former Finals MVP is controlling the offense and directing traffic ? ensuring that his team gets quality chances with each possession.

Denver?s bench players are night and day with their performances at home and on the road. Chris Andersen is a perfect example. The Birdman feasts on the energy the home fans give him ? kind of like when the Ultimate Warrior used to grab the ropes and shake them to build up his power.

The Lakers won?t repeat the same mistake they made last series against the Houston Rockets. They don?t want to come back home for a Game 7 and restore Denver?s confidence.

Pick: Lakers +5.5

Lakers coach Jackson dismisses allegation of payoff

Lakers coach Jackson dismisses allegation of payoff

Lakers coach Jackson dismisses allegation of payoff

DENVER - An anonymous Denver Nuggets player claimed the Lakers paid $50,000 to win Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Wednesday night at Staples Center.

He did not reveal who received the money or who wrote the check. Or, whether it was in cash.

The implication was clear, however.

The Nugget believed the referees were paid to call the game in the Lakers' favor, a charge the Lakers dismissed Thursday. The Nuggets were whistled for 30 fouls compared to 22 for the Lakers. Denver shot 30 free throws, and the Lakers shot 35.

"The Lakers paid $50,000 to win that game. They got their money's worth," a Nugget told the Denver Post newspaper after Game 5, not wishing to be identified for fear of receiving a fine from the league.

"We don't want to make any issue out of that," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I really didn't try to make an issue out of it Monday night. It came about in conversation with you guys. You know how it went. It's not something we want to focus on."

Jackson was fined $25,000 for criticizing the referees after Game 4.

Denver coach George Karl then criticized Jackson for working the referees.

Kobe Bryant put everything in perspective Thursday.

"It's been going on for years," the Lakers' superstar said when asked about the lobbying for better calls by Jackson and Karl. "It goes back to (Red) Holzman and (Red) Auerbach. It's part of the game. ... We've had games in the past where the officiating has been (poor). We've had games where it's been in our favor"

"In the Sacramento series (in 2002), we felt like we didn't get a fair handshake in some games and Sacramento didn't feel like it got a fair handshake in others. It's just how it is. The team that loses always is going to feel upset at the officiating.

"You just go out there and play. You adjust to the officiating. Last time we were in Denver, they were obviously calling it a lot tighter, so it became harder to guard Carmelo (Anthony) and those guys. You have to adjust."

Number crunching

Bryant averaged 27.4 points in each of the first two rounds of the playoffs, and then raised it to 33.8 points in the conference finals against the Nuggets. Overall, Bryant is averaging 29.3 points in 17 playoff games.

Lakers, Nuggets in Great Officiating Debate

Lakers, Nuggets in Great Officiating Debate

Lakers, Nuggets in Great Officiating Debate
Conspiracy talk is pooh-poohed by the Lakers, who hold a 3-2 edge in the series.
By Lisa Dillman

May 29, 2009

So, what exactly does $50,000 buy these days?

"A Prius," said the green-minded Kobe Bryant, smiling.

One Denver player apparently thought it was enough to secure a playoff game. As in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals between the Lakers and Nuggets.

One quick thought: That's all?

Then again, the economy is hitting everyone hard these days.

Joking aside, one of the Nuggets, who did not want to be named, told Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla after their 103-94 loss in Game 5 to the Lakers: "The Lakers paid $50,000 to win that game. They got their money's worth."

On the eve of tonight's Game 6 in Denver, Bryant had no comment Thursday after practice on the conspiracy theory other than saying, "Is that a question? No, I didn't hear it."

Said Lakers Coach Phil Jackson: "It's unfortunate, but that's the way sometimes these series boil down to who's got home-court advantage and who thinks they're going to get the advantage from that end of the game.

"But we don't want to make any issue out of that. . . . It's not something we want to focus on or get them focused in that direction."

Said the Lakers' Derek Fisher: "Overall, I'm a conspiracy theorist . . . but nah."

Good, then no one had to go looking for a grassy knoll near Staples Center. The NBA had no comment on the Denver Post report when asked about it by The Times.

Funny how the Great Officiating Debate seized hold of an already entertaining showdown between two seemingly equally matched teams -- the Lakers hold a 3-2 advantage in the series -- and has fans of both teams riding a roller-coaster ride of emotion.

"It's not any different than any other time in postseason that I've been here," Fisher said. "It's just the way it is. I remember going into San Antonio over the years and every time we went to San Antonio, Shaq would get two fouls in the first two minutes. That was just a fact.

"When every call and everything is replayed 50 times and talked about 1,000 times, you're going to have those variations in the calls, the fouls. There are too many things that happen in a basketball game that even if you felt as though the game was officiated poorly or not in your favor, there are so many other things you can control."

Like an 11-0 Lakers run to open the fourth quarter in Game 5. Or the Nuggets' bumbling, fumbling and committing turnovers on four consecutive possessions.

Trends are all but impossible to track in the playoffs for the Lakers, let alone this series.

One day Andrew Bynum is back, the next game he disappears. Sasha Vujacic makes an important three to close the first half and then goes into deep freeze on the bench.

Lamar Odom takes center stage in Game 5 with 19 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. And then who knows what implications that will have, if any, for Game 6 in Denver.

"Lamar played good," Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups said Thursday. "You've got to tip your hat to him. But every game is different. Now he'll be a little more in the scouting report. I feel fine about the way we've controlled what he's doing."

The Lakers have been through too much to declare Game 5 the start of a new beginning. Houston, anyone?

"We thought that after Game 5, you know, the 40-point win," Fisher said. "That was it, 'The Lakers are here now. They're going to go to Houston in Game 6.' And that was the win we needed. That wasn't the case. [The Game 5 win over Denver] in a lot of ways has no bearing on what you do tomorrow."

Breaking serve on the road to reach the NBA Finals for the second straight year was never going to be a simple assignment, not even when the Lakers used to be consistent, all those weeks ago.

Denver is also 7-1 at home in the playoffs this spring.

"Home is always good, no matter the case, but especially when you're down 3-2," Billups said. "It's a difficult position to be in no matter what. But home is always just an added bonus, an extra bonus. You know you're facing elimination, so you've got to come out and do all you can."

- The Los Angeles Lakers have been anything but consistent during the postseason but Phil Jackson's club has gotten it done when necessary.

The Lakers now stand on the precipice of a second consecutive NBA Finals appearance as they head back to the Rocky Mountains to face the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.

The Lakers took a 3-2 edge in the series on Wednesday in LA when Kobe Bryant scored 22 points and dished out eight assists, as the Lakers used a big second half run to down Denver, 103-94.

Lamar Odom had a spectacular game with 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks in a reserve role for the Lakers, who were beaten in six games by the Boston Celtics in last year's NBA Finals.

Pau Gasol chipped in 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the win.

"I think our mindset has to be extremely aggressive and tough," said Gasol. "I think we have to make very few mistakes there. We can't afford any mistakes, because they capitalize them well, very well."

Statistically speaking, the Lakers now have the upper hand. When a series has been tied at 2-2 in NBA history, the winner of Game 5 has gone on to take the set 83 percent of the time. Additionally, Jackson is 49-1 as a coach in playoff series when holding a series lead of any kind. Finally, the Lakers have not lost a 2-2 best-of-seven series when winning Game 5 since the 1969 NBA Finals vs. Boston, a string of 13 straight series wins.

Carmelo Anthony poured in 31 points for the Nuggets, who also received 12 points apiece from Kenyon Martin and Chauncey Billups in Game 5. Denver, though, was hurt by poor second half shooting. The Nuggets shot 29.3 percent (12-of-41) over the final two quarters, compared to 51.7 percent (15-of-29) for the Lakers. The Nuggets went just 5-of-21 in the final frame.

"The games that we've lost, they had an advantage on the inside. The games that we've won, we had an advantage," said Anthony. "So it's been going back and forth. I think come Friday we've got to take that advantage back, being a little more physical inside."

Down, 73-66, with just over five minutes left in the third quarter, the Lakers used a 21-3 spurt stretching into the fourth to take control, eventually holding on down the stretch. Shannon Brown started the burst with a slam and finished it by beating the shot clock on a long jumper, giving the hosts an 87-76 cushion with just over eight minutes left.

"We found a special that worked for us that made them double team, rotated the ball," said Jackson. "Kobe was moving the basketball. We found guys open for easier shots tonight and changed the complexity of the game and gave us a bust out."

The last time the Lakers played in Denver, Monday night, they lost, 120-101, as the Nuggets converted 37-of-49 free throws. Jackson was critical of the officiating in that one and drew a $25,000 fine. The tables turned two nights later, as the Lakers connected on 26-of-35 foul shots in Game 5, while Denver was 23-of-30.

"It means we respond to the challenge," said Bryant. "Denver's a tough team. And the way that they beat us in Game 4, I think there were a lot of people having doubts and we did a good job responding to the challenge."

Wednesday's Game 5 also marked the fourth time in league playoff history a game was tied after each of the first three quarters, meaning it all came down to the final 12 minutes.

"For most of the series, we outplayed them for most stretches of the game," Billups said. "We just couldn't get over the hump in the fourth quarter in a few different situations."

Part of the Nuggets' problem has been disciple. Denver has committed 11 technical fouls in this series and defensive specialist Dahntay Jones is just one more flagrant foul away from a mandated suspension but coach George Karl downplayed his team's inability to keep its cool.

"You guys (the media) are almost saying you've got to have savvy and poise to be a championship team," Karl said Thursday. "I mean, you think the Detroit Pistons have the poise that the San Antonio Spurs have? No, there's a different way of handling emotional, passionate, intense players. We have some guys who are emotional. Maybe a little too emotional. But for me, I'm not going to tell them to stop that because I think that stops them from becoming a competitor.

"Right now, we're competing on the best stage on a pretty good level. I think the Lakers know we're there."

Game 7 in the set, if necessary, is scheduled for Sunday back in LA.

LA took three of four games from Denver during the regular season this year with the Nuggets lone win coming in the Rocky Mountains on February 27.

The two teams have met in the playoffs on three different occasions with the Lakers coming out on top each time. LA took a first round series in 1979, won the Western Conference finals in 1985 and swept the Nuggets in a first round set last year.
