He's nothing but a blonde Pete Carroll.
If only, if only...
I'm sure your hate of Kiffen wont allow you to see things rationally. And, I'm not sure this plan is working out and I'm not sure I buy it, but there is a method to the maddness. USC under Carroll never had a ST coach and it was a constant weak point getting fooled on fakes, etc. It wasnt a priority and they didnt want the D coach responsible to lose focus from his primary job.
Kiffen brought in the ST coach from Fresno last year and there was talk of this at the beginning of last year. The ST coach discussed the reason they would be going for so many 2 pt conversions.
Several reasons for it. But, heres the main theory:
With teams having limited practice time every week, they're goal is to force teams to take time out of their regular game planning to focus on the SC 2 point conversion. In order to do so, it needs to be a credible, realistic threat every time. If the other team doesn't have a dedicated ST coach, it distracts the defensive coach responsible for ST D, if they do have a dedicated ST coach, they're going to spend time trying to defend it instead of practicing fakes, kick blocking etc. And with SC now having a ST coach, it doesn't take away time from D or O coaches practice time or game planning. So, they might as well put him to work.
Ultimately I'm sure they'd like to get above 50% conversion rate, but i dont think that happened last year. And, no matter how much sense it makes, the first time they lose by 1 point and they missed a 1st Qtr 2 point conversion, his ass is going to get nailed to the wall by writers and fans alike.
They will do it a lot early in the year and taper off later in the year once its been shown to be something SC will do at anytime.
Does it work? I don't know, but expect to see it alot again vs Syracuse, especially in the first half in a few weeks.
