Language guru: Obama speech too 'professorial' for his target audience

By the CNN Wire Staff

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Speech may have gone over heads of audience
  • Plaudits for "oil began spewing"
  • "Not Obama at his best"

(CNN) -- President Obama's speech on the gulf oil disaster may have gone over the heads of many in his audience, according to an analysis of the 18-minute talk released Wednesday.
Tuesday night's speech from the Oval Office of the White House was written to a 9.8 grade level, said Paul J.J. Payack, president of Global Language Monitor. The Austin, Texas-based company analyzes and catalogues trends in word usage and word choice and their impact on culture.

Though the president used slightly less than four sentences per paragraph, his 19.8 words per sentence "added some difficulty for his target audience," Payack said.

He singled out this sentence from Obama as unfortunate: "That is why just after the rig sank, I assembled a team of our nation's best scientists and engineers to tackle this challenge -- a team led by Dr. Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and our nation's secretary of energy."

"A little less professorial, less academic and more ordinary," Payack recommended. "That's the type of phraseology that makes you (appear) aloof and out of touch."

Yeah, it's now easy to see why some people thought Dubbya won debates a few years ago. He certainly dumbed it down enough for his followers...

God forbid we have someone who choses to speak to us at above a 9th grade level...

It always goes back to him doesn't it? I guess it goes to show how stupid Gore and Kerry are?

Can we blame today's weather, the Dodgers poor pitching performance or the fact that Tiger Woods couldn't keep his pud in his pants on W?

it's more that Obama's vague and hopefull-sounding rhetoric--so effective in low doses in Senate or campaigns--isn't the sort of risk-averse assessment and hedging you want to see in a leader's speech.

Matthews, Olbermann and Howard Fineman seemed finally to catch onto this...

Like successfully writing Astrology: "The key is to make it sound specific, while actually being vague."

But now that he's commander in chief, even his strongest supporters want something more than his sweet voice and charisma.

glad to see you thinking Matthews, Olbermann and Howard Fineman reactions are "neocon"!

I didn't say he should do something, I said he should sound like he is! I was critical of his rhetoric.

But you right on the wrong point you made, there isn't much he can do here beside getting his various agencies to coordinate better. But even doing that would provide nice list of decisive actions he coulda rattled off...

I dont think Matthews and them are neocons I think you are.

I dont watch them clowns much either. Same as I dont watch Rush and Hannity and Savage

So if Obama sounded like he was doing something then you would be happy. I doubt it.

All that can be done is being done.

It will get stopped and cleaned up and life will go on. Disasters happen every year. This aint the last one we will deal with.

I thought you actually might have a clue to some suggestions, but guess not.

I would agree, Terry. I think his empty rhetoric really came through in this speech, from what I've read. However, I do think he could not win in many ways - had he come out tougher against BP or taken over the mission immediately, their would have been an outcry against him and the assault on private business.

I wish he would have, as do about half of Americans - nothing unique or different there.

Illum, it doesn't always come back to Bush for me. But in considering the subject of communication and dumbing down the message, I think it certainly could. I loathe Bush and his inability to communicate - the worst ever, IMO. And that's a specific reference, not just an off the wall paintbrush comment. He could not communicate well. I think Obama does - although he is not specific enough in many cases. Which I also understand in many cases.

I liked the speech and I thought he covered for me what needed to be said.

If Obama had stepped in and taken over then the goverment would be paying for all this.

And the neocons would be crying so loud they would scream. Its costing us taxpayers, why did you do that, you should have let BP do it.

fawk that shit

Obama has the responsibility right where it belongs. And that is BP the dirty bastids.

Take money from them until their nose bleeds and then kick BP in the balls and take some more.

This will teach these oil billionaire companies that safety is not something to poo poo about. And if there is a situation, get ready to pay the tab
rat bastids.
