HOUSTON - Former Enron Corp. chiefs Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were convicted Thursday of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud in a case born from one of the biggest business scandals in U.S. history.

The verdict put the blame for the demise of what was once the nation's seventh-largest company squarely on its top two executives. It came in the sixth day of deliberations following a trial that lasted nearly four months.

Lay was also convicted of bank fraud and making false statements to banks in a separate trial related to his personal banking.

Lay was convicted on all six counts against him in the trial with Skilling. Skilling was convicted on 19 of the 28 counts against and acquitted on the remaining nine.

The former corporate titans are now convicted felons facing years in prison when the panel found them guilty of running an elaborate fraud that gave the nation's onetime seventh-largest company a glamorous illusion of success.

Jurors declared through their verdict that both men repeatedly lied to cover a vast web of unsustainable accounting tricks and failing ventures that shoved Enron into bankruptcy protection in December 2001.

The conviction was a major win for the government, serving almost as a bookend in an era that has seen prosecutors win convictions against executives from WorldCom Inc. to Adelphia Communications Corp. and homemaking maven Martha Stewart

How true. Just read with the settlements from 3 major banks and some other companies stockholders should get approx 18 per cent on the dollar back.

I hope they gut these two bank accounts and assets. It's idiots like this that give big business and honest CEO's a bad name.

doesn't it strike strange to anyone that Bush & Kenneth Lay are very close personal friends??

shamrock....

lay was found guilty & will go to jail....

the gov't. should take all of lay & skilling's possessions & sell them & give the money to the people who were ripped off by these two dogs....

but are you saying that the president cannot have friends ?

i'm pissed at bush for other reasons than him being friends with lay....

if i was living in mass. i would worry more about your two senators who were among the ones who voted to sell out law abiding americans in favor of people who break our laws......

#I completely agree all of their belongings, and their Family belongings should be confiscated & allocated to the working people that got burned.

#2 I think the president like anyone else should have friends, however I find it somewhat troubling our president is such close friends with the biggest corporate criminal in the history of the country. Yes that is troubling, call it poor judgment, whatever, I don't find it appealing at all. Especially when the company went wild mainly on Bush s watch as governoR, with his law changes.

#3 I don't vote, unfortunately, the senator s do, I like you would have voted NO, I did however call Kerry s office and told his staff my feelings, which is more than most do. And unfortunately lots more than Massachusetts voted YES.
