Edwards: Legendary 'capper passes away
September 9, 2004

The handicapping industry lost one of its finest Wednesday night when Mike Lee passed away in Las Vegas. Lee had suffered a massive stroke Sunday, leaving him comatose and on life support.

Legendary handicapper Mike Lee passed away Wednesday night at the age of 55.

Mike's son Steve, who lives in Atlanta, flew to Las Vegas and made the decision to remove his father from life support. Lee, who was 55, is survived by two grandchildren.

Lee was one of the original handicappers at VegasInsider.com before leaving VI in the summer of 2002. His weekly contributions while at VI included his college and pro football gridbits, not to mention daily selections in all the major sports and horse racing picks at his favorite track, Del Mar.

"This is a sad day for everyone in our industry," said Peter Gold, VI's General Manager. "Mike Lee was one of the hardest working and most respected handicappers in the business. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends."

Lee was the author of his weekly publication, "The Moneymaker Newsletter." He also wrote several books on sports wagering, including "Betting the Bases."

Lee won the Las Vegas Hilton SuperContest in 1989, and he was a regular in local contests over the last two decades.

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Lee wished to be cremated and have his ashes spread in the Pacific Ocean outside of San Diego, near the Del Mar racetrack.
