At dinner table earlier, I asked my daughter, who is in 6th grade, if any teachers talked about it in school today and she said no... :nono:

My wife teaches 4th grade and I asked her if she said anything in school today and she said she didn't remember. She said she has a book in school she looks at everyday and it has things that happened this day in history and D-day wasn't listed today.... :scared unphuckingbelievable

mmmmmmm not unthinkable at all. attend a veterans day parade. not many show up. so much for supporting the ones who gave thier lives so we could be free. its all smoking mirrors. not many really care. all i have heard today is that the world may end. if it wasnt for these brave men years ago our world as we know it may have ended. its very sad is all i can say

Between Green Bay and Iowa City
D-Day Order
~ Dwight Eisenhower

Audio

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

This day in history . . . June 6, 1944.

Yes, we should remember today. More than 10,000 casualties on one day of fighting.

Here's a thought, if they would have coverage back then during WWII that they have today, do you think we would have won the war.

Thing's went on in that war that equal or worse than now, but it was a WAR and sometimes it isn't pretty, but you are putting your life on the line to win, not worry about some fu***ing embedded reporter looking over your shoulder at every move and a reporter that more than likely doesn't agree with war anyway or works for people that feel that way. :nono:

my kids know about it because I've taught them myself. Kids are now taught so they can take their standardized tests well so the school and school district can get awards. They don't learn history; they have "social studies". Sad deal!

invasion of Normandy Beach...is one of the single most courageous days in history :Yep:

yep, along with D-Days on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. Not putting any less emphasis on 6/6/44, but there were some terrible D-Days in the Pacific theatre too. My grandaddy told me a little about them before he died. He couldn't talk about it very much. He went through some bad, bad, Japanese suicide charges, and he saw some horrible stuff.

The guys in Vietnam saw some terrible stuff too as I'm sure the guys in the Middle East are too.

?Cadets of the graduating class? ? the students arose and saluted ? and then changed it to ?Boys,? making this statement: ?I?ve been where you are now and I know just how you feel. It?s entirely natural that there should beat in the breast of every one of you a hope and desire that some day you can use the skill you have acquired here.

?Suppress it! You don?t know the horrible aspects of war. I?ve been through two wars and I know. I?ve seen cities and homes in ashes. I?ve seen thousands of men lying on the ground, their dead faces looking up at the skies. I tell you, war is hell!?

General William Tecumseh Sherman November 18, 1933.
