Let's Wonder Together

Why has the world turned away from US in terms of our reputation and in joining our efforts against "evil"? Let's review:

1) We constantly berate other nations for human rights violations, how they treat their poor and for their immorality. LET'S ALL THINK ABOUT LIVING CONDITIONS IN DETROIT OR THE MURDER RATE IN CHICAGO.

2) We take the moral high ground in dictating how other nations should raise their children, treat their women and even what to kill to feed their families. WE LOST THE MORAL HIGH GROUND YEARS AGO AND THAT IS NOT A PARTISAN VIEWPOINT.

3) We dictate who can or who cannot have weapons to defend themselves and, based on that, take actions to starve nations. WHO HAS ACTUALLY USED THE ATOMIC WEAPON?

4) We make fun of a private citizen for having a friendship with a foreign dictator and scoff at the possibility that we would open up diplomatic dialogue. WE ARE NOW CONDUCTING WAR GAMES NEAR SOUTH KOREA.

5) We disdain other cultures and countries, are ignorant to their customs and only value their money as we export the overflow of our own cultural crap. SEE HONEY BOO BOO, THE KARDASHIANS AND MORMONS.

There are, of course, mitigating circumstances for these examples but, some day we will have to realize that we are not the police of the world, that we cannot export our own morality and that while we attempt to feed, control, patrol and own the world...our own country is moving toward 3rd or 4th class status (just check healthcare quality, student performance, GNP, etc).

Put yourself in the shoes of someone from the outside looking in.

Right behind you
Bad premise. The world is no more against us than it was in the past. In the not too distant past you may remember Japan, China, Germany, Spain, USSR and Italy among the advanced nations who were against us.

The British have been on our side, mostly, since that incident in 1776. Canada and Australia have been friendly as has France. The north Europeans don't care one way or another. That's about the extent of our long term friends, not counting the 100+ countries which are so insignificant nobody cares what they think.

Although your premise sucks, I do agree that we should mind our own business and let other countries do as they please so long as they are not a direct threat. If they want to be communist, gay and godless, why should we give a shit? Hell, I don't care if my neighbors are gay commie atheists.

We need to live and let live. We've got our own problems we can't seem to solve. It's bad enough we have rampant bigotry against other Americans; we don't need to berate other countries too.

We can start by shutting down all those military bases around the world. Let the Japanese and Koreans fight their own fights. Maybe they'll lose like SVN. So what? Doesn't make any difference to us. None at all.

The murder rate in Chicago has significantly decreased in recent years. If you were to look at the average rate over four year periods, it is reflected as such:

90-93: 894
94-97: 829
98-01: 662
02-05: 540
06-09: 473
10-12: 459 (3 year period)

That is just about a 50% decrease in pure #. The population of the city increased from ?90 to ?00 by 3.9% and decreased by 3.2% when looking from ?90 to ?10. The highest one year isn't even contained in any of the above periods as that mark was reached in 1974.

Is it still an issue, yes, but there are other cities which have a worst rate. And the recent trend likely isn?t changing anyone?s opinion view of the city or the US unless those people have a misguided view since there has been a significant improvement.

Chicago has always been my favorite city. I appreciate your grouping of the data but, the takeaway figure is murders increased by 16% in 2012 versus the previous year.

That certainly has been in the news (January 2013 was even worse, Feb better) and as someone who grew up in Illinois, I am hoping for great improvement.

I'm not sure the city has the leadership or motivation in place to get it done.

I understand there was an increase in 2012 and January wasn't great as you stated but February was quite low. Is there any one thing that changed it in Feb? No, and that is from the police chief himself, see the article below.

Your original post alluded to trends and a change in perception. That is why I grouped the figures to show the trend. Even a one year increase or decrease is hard to attribute to anything. It is the procedures and strategy put in place over time that helps.

Before last year, 2008 was a big year in terms of analyzing the #'s and what it meant. The early part of the decade the rate was 600+ and then from '04 - '07 it was in the mid 400's. Then in '08 it spiked back up over 500. For awhile they couldn't really figure out why besides that gang activity/violence was really rampant. What was later theorized was that too many of the old guard gang leaders had been locked up. This lead to younger hot heads calling the shots (pun intended I guess), trying to make a name for themselves by pulling a trigger and starting rivalries.

Just trying to illustrate that it is hard to pinpoint any one reason.
