Levi Johnston: Lot of divorce talk in Palin home
He says she neglected parenting and governorship duties in favor of money

Johnston: Palin?s fame ?got to her head?
July 13: TODAY?s Ann Curry talks to Levi Johnston, the father of Bristol Palin?s son, Tripp, about why he thinks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is stepping down.

updated 2:10 p.m. ET, Wed., Sept . 2, 2009
He almost became a member of the Palin family, but Levi Johnston ? who fathered former Gov. Sarah Palin's grandchild with her daughter Bristol ? isn't holding back when it comes to spilling the Alaska clan's secrets.

"There was a lot of talk of divorce in that house ... times when Sarah and Todd would mention it and sound pretty serious," says Johnston, who turns 19 this year. (Last month, the couple denied Internet rumors of a pending divorce.)

But that wasn't all. In a wide-ranging interview with Vanity Fair in its October issue, out nationally Sept. 8, the teen says that the onetime vice-presidential nominee's frequent self-description as a "hockey mom" who put family above career was far from the truth.

"Even before she was nominated, there wasn't much parenting in that house," he says. "Sarah doesn't cook, Todd doesn't cook ? the kids would do it all themselves: cook, clean, do the laundry, and get ready for school. Most of the time Bristol would help her youngest sister with her homework, and I'd barbecue chicken or steak on the grill."

But it was the people of Alaska who might've suffered worse, according to Johnston. Palin often complained that her job as governor was "too hard," and after spending a couple weeks of being gloomy about losing the vice presidency, she focused on making money instead of the needs of Alaskans, he said.

Talk of quitting
"Sarah was sad for a while. She walked around the house pouting," Johnston says. "A week or two after she got back she started talking about how nice it would be to quit and write a book or do a show and make 'triple the money.' She would blatantly say, 'I want to just take this money and quit being governor.' "

Palin resigned from her post as governor of Alaska in July.

Her bid for the White House definitely got to the head of the woman from Wasilla, Johnston adds, saying she'd say things like: "I brought everything to the table" and "The majority of people were out there voting because of me!" when supporters of U.S. Sen. John McCain started to blame her for the loss. "She definitely thought she was running for president," Johnston says.

Palin's ambition for higher office also affected the family's plans for Bristol and Johnston's baby, he says. The governor planned for the baby to be adopted by herself and her husband, Todd, with his real parentage to be kept a secret.

"That way, she said, Bristol and I didn't have to worry about anything," Johnston says. "Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging ? she wouldn't give up. She would say, 'So, are you gonna let me adopt him?' I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn't want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid."

Levi Johnston: Palin wanted to adopt grandchild
The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? Levi Johnston, the father of Sarah Palin's grandchild, said the former Republican vice presidential candidate wanted to adopt his child so that people wouldn't know her 17-year-old daughter was pregnant.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnston said Palin had a plan to deal with Bristol's pregnancy.

"Sarah kept mentioning this plan. She was nagging ? she wouldn't give it up. She would say, 'So, are you gonna let me adopt him?' We both kept telling her we were definitely not going to let her adopt the baby. I think Sarah wanted to make Bristol look good, and she didn't want people to know that her 17-year-old daughter was going to have a kid," Johnston told the magazine for its October edition, which goes on sale Saturday. Excerpts of the interview were posted Wednesday on the magazine's Web site.

Meghan Stapleton, Palin's spokeswoman, did not immediately respond to request for comment, but has previously discounted Johnston's allegations. Palin has been keeping a low profile since she resigned on July 26 with more than a year left in her first term.

A week after Republican presidential candidate John McCain named Palin as his running mate, the campaign issued a statement that her unwed daughter was pregnant. It also said Bristol, now 18, and the young man would marry.

Johnston, 19, lived in the house for two months awaiting the birth of the baby, Tripp, who was born in December. The couple called off the wedding shortlyafter their son's birth.

Since then, Johnston has complained in national interviews that the Palins limited his access to the boy. He's also said he's pursuing a career as an actor or model.

Johnston said the Palin home in Wasilla was not what most people would think.

"The Palin house was much different from what many people expect of a normal family, even before she was nominated for vice president. There wasn't much parenting in that house. Sarah doesn't cook, Todd doesn't cook ? the kids would do it all themselves," Johnson told Vanity Fair.

Palin has four other children. The youngest, Trig, is 1 year old.

Johnston also repeated claims that Palin said she wanted to quit and write a book or host a TV show.

When Palin returned to Alaska following McCain's unsuccessful run for president, she was different, Johnston said.

"Sarah was sad for a while. She walked around the house pouting. I had assumed she was going to go back to her job as governor, but a week or two after she got back she started talking about how nice it would be to quit and write a book or do a show and make 'triple the money.'

"She would blatantly say, "I want to just take this money and quit being governor," Johnston said.

He also claims Palin is not the hockey mom or outdoorswoman she claims to be. He said she rarely attended her oldest son's hockey games, and asked Levi how to shoot a gun.

"She says she goes hunting and lives off animal meat ? I've never seen it," Johnston said.

Chuck Heath, Palin's father, said his daughter has been out of Alaska for the past month writing her memoirs.

Later this month, the former governor is expected to appear at her first commercial speaking engagement during a visit to Hong Kong to address the CLSA Investors Forum, a well-known annual conference of global investment managers. Bill Clinton, Al Gore and Alan Greenspan have spoken at the event, hosted by brokerage and investment group CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets.

Johnston, who is weighing the many "celebrity" career options now coming his way thanks to the meteoric rise of his former mother-out-of-law, is in sharper-than-a serpent?s-tooth mode in the October issue of Vanity Fair, where he -- how to put this delicately? -- rips Palin a new one for what he perceives as her personal failings. The magazine said it paid him an author fee, since the story is in his own words.

In ?Me and Mrs. Palin,? Johnston?s first-person account accuses Palin of being a bad mother, of being a bad wife, of not knowing how to shoot a gun, and even -- get this! -- of not even being a real hockey mom! (She only attended 15% of her son's games, says Johnston, who was his teammate.)

In short, he accuses Palin of being an all-around phony. Paging Holden Caulfield!

As many parents know because they find out the hard way, teenagers are excessively judgmental creatures who are usually operating with a limited amount of information and experience. So 19-year-old Johnston?s perceptions should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, he did live with Alaska?s first family, and was privy to deeply private incidents and attitudes. And the details of what went on inside this apparently dysfunctional American family are juicy.

The Palins frequently fought, says Johnston, and Todd, who sneaked beer in the garage because Sarah didn?t like him drinking, regularly threatened divorce.

Palin, he says, paid more attention to Bristol and Levi's baby, Tripp, than she did to her own baby, Trig, who was born with Down syndrome and became a symbol of hope for parents of special-needs children during the campaign. Says Johnston: "I couldn't believe it when she would come over to us and sometimes say, playing around, 'No, I don't want the retarded baby -- I want the other one' and pick up Tripp. That was just her, even her kids were used to it.":SIB :SIB

Attempts to reach Palin's spokewoman were unsuccessful.

Maybe Johnston's quest for attention should be dismissed as only that, but we did enjoy his portrait of Sarah Palin as a busy governor:

?Throughout the years I spent with them, when Sarah got home from her office -- almost never later than 5 and sometimes as early as noon -- she usually walked in the door, said hello, and then disappeared into her bedroom, where she would hang out. Sometimes, she?d take an hourlong bath. Other times she sat on the living-room couch in her two-piece pajama set from Walmart -- she had all the colors -- with her hair down, watching house shows and wedding shows on TV. She always wanted things and she always wanted other people to get them for her. If she wanted a movie, Bristol and I would go to the video store; if she wanted food, we?d get her something to eat, like a Crunchwrap Supreme from Taco Bell. She?d try to bribe everyone in the house, or give us guilt trips."

The best exchange comes 3:29 minutes in, when Tank asks Levi if he's thought about doing Playgirl. Levi, wearing aviator sunglasses and sitting in the backseat of an SUV, says "I'd do it...if it would get me out of there." Tank then lectures Levi on what it takes to be in the nude magazine: "You've gotta have some johnson. You can can't come in there lacking in the johnson area. You've gotta unfold some things....[A ]dude posed for the magazine and they had to add an extra leaf to fold out for him...[so] I'm saying, do you need extra magazine or do you don't [sic] need that?"

"You're just gonna have to see, Tank," Levi answers.

No. 1 ? Cam
This is a way that Palin proves just what a stupid politician she is. Ok, she had her daughter and this guy pretend to be in a relationship for the cameras. Then as SOON as she didn't win, they start hassling this guy about seeing his kid, she turns on this guy, and starts badmouthing him etc? What an idiot. She wants to come back in 2012 and she should have made sure that this kid had nothing but good things to say about her. But instead, she can only see the next 5 min. She was done using him, cut him loose, and now has had to deal with months and months of her dirty laundry coming out. Man, just how dumb is she?
