In eight seasons as head coach, Marvin Lewis has not usually given a timetable on how long his starters will play in preseason games.

It's not about to change now.

When asked on Thursday how long the first unit will play in Sunday's Hall of Fame Game against Dallas, the only thing Lewis would say is that they would play some of the first quarter. When pressed deeper, Lewis uttered a phrase usual for this time of year - "they'll play until I take them out."

Typically starters play two series at most in the annual preseason opener, but if the Bengals were to have two straight three-and-out series, Lewis might decide to let them plan another.

Through eight days and 12 practices Lewis has been happy with his team's progress but noted there is still work to be done.

"I think we've had good consistent work," Lewis said. "I think the weather, with the heat and humidity, has been cooperative, which is a good thing for training camp for us to get ready for the season. I think now that we have everyone here in camp and on board, we're able to move into different offensive and defensive structures, and to put guys into certain positions and certain situations where we want to see them. As we go into this first game, I think we're in pretty good shape."

Lewis has ruled out fullback Fui Vakapuna (shoulder), offensive tackle Andre Smith (foot/conditioning) and wide receiver Antonio Bryant (knee) from playing Sunday. Safety Tom Nelson (knee) and linebacker Rashad Jeanty (leg) are on the active PUP list.

There's a good possibility that linebacker Rey Maualuga (hamstring), kicker Mike Nugent (leg) and cornerback Johnathan Joseph (thigh bruise) will also sit out.

SOME AGGRAVATION: Roy Williams is looking forward to facing his old team and visiting the Hall of Fame.

When it comes to the game itself, that's another matter.

"It's going to be tough to evaluate the first preseason game," he said. "It's going to be more aggravating than everything. You're going to play 4-5 snaps and then you're done. I guess you can get a line out of the first couple plays and how we do."

NERVOUS ENERGY: Adam Jones did play in Dallas for a season, but for his first game in nearly 20 months it doesn't matter who the opponent is.

"The outcome of this is so much better. I'm not nervous of going out and playing but I'm anxious," Jones said. "Whoever it was it would be special. It could be a little league team out there as long as they have the referees."

ROLLER-COASTER RIDE: First-round pick Jermaine Gresham struggled during Wednesday's two practices but started to get into a rhythm on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Gresham had a span where he made a mistake on three or four straight plays, but he bounced back Thursday.

"You can see a little bit today," offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said. "Now he's getting a little worn down because we're getting him a lot of reps."

Marcus Spears to miss 4-6 weeks with knee injury

Marcus Spears' availability for the Sept. 12 season opener at Washington is in question because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Spears suffered a Grade 2 tear of the ligament but he will not require surgery. The injury just requires time to heal and he will likely have to wear a brace when he returns.

Jason Hatcher would appear to be the new starter at defensive end but he has been slowed in training camp because of a hyperextended elbow.

Spears, who is in the last year of his contract, has not missed a game in his first five seasons. He hurt his right knee during camp in 2005 but was able to play in a reserve role before taking over as the starter in the final 10 games.

The Cowboys had mild trade talks with Miami before the draft in April but nothing materialized. Once training camp started, the Cowboys effectively ended any talk regarding Spears. He is a valued voice in the locker room and a leader among the defensive linemen.

Hatcher, a third round pick in 2006, has not started a game in his first four seasons. He has 113 tackles and 6.5 sacks while playing in mostly passing situations.

Before the elbow injury, Hatcher was off to a good start in camp and felt like his work against the run had improved greatly.

Dallas coach Sticking To Fundamentals

Phillips isn't interested in forming a detailed game plan for the Bengals. The Cowboys will prep for Cincinnati during Friday's final workout, but on Thursday they ran two normal camp practices.

Winning is important, but Phillips typically wants his team focused on fundamentals in the preseason opener.

"I like to see them play the game - running, blocking, tackling - and see how you do there," Phillips said. "The coaching part, the scheming part, will come as we go."

Bengals scouting report

Offense

? The timing between Carson Palmer and Terrell Owens has gotten better in recent practices, but it will be interesting to see how they do in game situations.

? Depending on the future status of Antonio Bryant, there will be one or two receiver spots open. Jerome Simpson and Maurice Purify have had nice camps
while Dez Briscoe has been inconsistent. Matt Jones was injured for most of this week, but he has also struggled when healthy.

? With running back Cedric Peerman probably not playing, this could be undrafted rookie Cordera Eason?s chance to get a lot of carries. Earlier in the week, Lewis said he was pleased with what Eason was doing. With Fui Vakapuna?s injury, it will also be a good time to see if Joe Tronzo can have a solid game.

? Can a young second unit offensive line be better in pass protection?

Defense

? It?s the first chance to see how Michael Johnson does in game situations at SAM outside linebacker. If Rey Maualuga cannot play, Johnson should get the start and might see extended playing time.

? How often does defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer use 3-4 sets, or does he wait until later in the preseason to experiment?

? Speaking of undrafted rookies, linebacker Vincent Rey and cornerback Johnny Sears have had a good start to camp and look to have solid games.

Special Teams

? Can Dave Rayner take the lead in the kicking derby with Mike Nugent injured?

? How does UC product Mike Windt do at long snapper in game conditions?

? Adam Jones and Jordan Shipley should get their chances on punt and kick returns. If they do well, Quan Cosby?s odds of making the roster just became a lot longer.

Coaches

? Bengals ? Marvin Lewis (eighth year, 14-14 in preseason)

? Cowboys ? Wade Phillips (ninth season overall, fouth fourth in Dallas).

Injuries

? OUT - OT Andre Smith (foot/conditioning), S Tom Nelson (knee), LB Rashad Jeanty (leg), FB Fui Vakapuna (shoulder), WR Antonio Bryant (knee)

? Questionable - LB Rey Maualuga (hamstring), CB Johnathan Joseph (thigh bruise), DE Carlos Dunlap (concussion), C Jonathan Luigs (hip), K Mike Nugent (groin/leg), RB Cedric Peerman (unspecified).

Not sure what to expect

--Cincinnati.Com Blog Network

As I sit here this morning typing away, I have no idea what to expect when the Cincinnati Bengals kick off the preseason against the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game at Fawcett Stadium in Canton tonight (8 p.m. on NBC).

I seriously don?t care if the Bengals win or lose. I just want them to look good on national TV. In other words: ?Studs, please don?t embarrass yourselves, your franchise and our city in this really big show.?

The past two times they were on the national stage, the Bengals bombed terribly, losing twice to the New York Jets ? 37-0 at the Meadowlands in the 2009 regular-season finale and 24-14 in the Wild Card playoff round at Paul Brown Stadium.

Former Bengals wide receiver and current NBC pro football color analyst Cris Collinsworth visited training camp last week and called the Bengals legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

I?d like to think the same thing. All 11 starters return on the NFL?s No. 4-ranked defense. Bengals fans have nicknamed the unit the ?Z-fense? because defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer works magic as a motivational machine.

But the biggest changes are on offense, thank you very much.

The draft yielded first-round tight end Jermaine Gresham and third-round wide receiver Jordan Shipley. And then, on the eve of training camp, the club signed 15-year veteran and future Hall of Fame wideout Terrell Owens, whose six Pro Bowl appearances matches teammate Chad Ochocinco, his best friend.

More than anything else tonight, I want to see progress in the passing attack.

We know that at least three potential offensive starters will be missing. Right tackle Andre Smith (left foot), fullback Fui Vakapuna (shoulder) and wide receiver Antonio Bryant (left knee) are sidelined with injuries.

We believe the Bengals? starting offensive and defensive units will play a quarter or less. So don?t blink or you?ll miss the stars in stripes.

Smith, who joins linebacker Rashad Jeanty (leg) and free safety Tom Nelson (knee) on the Physically Unable to Perform/active list, is easily the biggest disappointment of training camp.

He was expected to wrestle the starting job away from Dennis Roland, but February surgery that required the insertion of a pin in his fractured left foot served as a setback.

Judging from his protruding stomach ? which resembles a sack of flour bulging out of a cupboard ? it?s clear Smith didn?t work hard enough on his conditioning in the offseason. Smith has a ton of talent, but his work ethic leaves a lot to be desired.

I?d like to see quarterback Carson Palmer light it up tonight. I?d like to see T.O. reach the end zone against his former team. I?d like to see Ochocinco dance. I?m like to see Jerome Simpson go berserk.

That?s asking a lot ? maybe too much. With the Bengals, I?m used to disappointment.

Spotlight will be on Dallas Cowboys' depth players

--star-telegram.com

Fans who are looking forward to seeing the Dallas Cowboys starters will not be excited when they watch the first preseason game in Canton, Ohio.

The Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals will meet in the Hall of Fame game tonight at 7 and Dallas coach Wade Phillips said starters on offense and defense will likely play no more than 10 plays.

Here are five storylines for tonight's game:

McGee on display

This is hardly a make or break game for Stephen McGee, a second-year quarterback from Texas A&M, but it is an important preseason. Backup Jon Kitna did not take one regular-season snap in 2009, so there is nothing more reserve than a reserve quarterback with the Cowboys. But Phillips wants to develop players for the future, and obviously in case of an injury during a game, Phillips needs to know if McGee can compete at the pro level.

Can Hatcher fill in for Spears?

Jason Hatcher, the fifth-year defensive end from Grambling State, gets a chance to move into the starting lineup with Marcus Spears sidelined because of a knee injury. While the rest of the starters will not play past the first quarter, Hatcher could get extended time. The Cowboys seem to have effectively replaced the departed Ken Hamlin with Alan Ball at safety. One of the strengths of the defense was stability, but with Spears sidelined, suddenly there is an issue.

Ogletree trying to find a spot

Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree excited the Cowboys at times with his potential last season, but he has not had a particularly good training camp. With the starters playing little, Ogletree must demonstrate that he can compete during a game. The Cowboys could keep as many as six wide receivers. Miles Austin, Roy Williams, Dez Bryant and Patrick Crayton are locks. Sam Hurd is a solid veteran and special teams player. And a young group that includes Jesse Holley, Manuel Johnson and Titus Ryan also has potential.

T.O. and company

Patrick Crayton calls the Bengals "Cowboys North." The Bengals' roster includes ex-Cowboys Terrell Owens, Roy Williams (the safety), Tank Johnson, Adam Jones, Antonio Bryant, and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Owens signed with the Bengals less than two weeks ago and probably won't see that much playing time. But you can be sure that if he catches a pass, he'll be up to something.

Linebacker shuffle

The Cowboys are excited about their youthful group of backup LBs. Although Sean Lee, who missed 10 days with a quadriceps injury, is unlikely to play, the Cowboys want to get extended looks at Brandon Williams (22), Victor Butler (23) and Jason Williams (24). Leon Williams, 27, who played four years in Cleveland, has also impressed coaches and they want to see how he does in a game. Leon Williams had poor off-season workouts, but has excelled in camp.
