they still exist. in my heart.

Saw a game in Olympic stadium. Expos vs my reds. ‘81 maybe?
In an era defined by shitty, sterile ballparks with plastic fields, Olympic stadium stood out as one of the shittiest.
oh, the big O was an awful place to watch a ballgame. BUT... i was there to see Tony Gywnn get his 3,000th hit. so that was cool.

long story short, it was august... 1999? must have been '99. friday morning, GF and i had already taken the day off to go to the track at Saratoga. was watching Sportscenter and saw Gywnn got # 2,999 the previous night, and they were opening a series in Montreal that night. as an Expos fan (that's another story), i thought it would be cool to see # 3,000 in Montreal. because nobody went to games there, we were able to get seats in the 10th row, right off first base. top of the first... there it is! an odd detail that i still remember... one of the umps was Gywnn's college teammate. i also remember a young vladimir guerrero warming up before the game. he was just casually tossing the ball, and it was like a missile coming out of his hand.

VERY cool memory, Smitty! I’ve seen a few MLB games over the years, but nothing as memorable as seeing Gwynn get #3000.
I see you’re in upstate New York? How far upstate?
My wife has family in Wells, Vermont— about an hour from Albany.
One trip out there years ago, I met up with Morris at Saratoga for a day of racing and beers. Lots of fun that day—wallet was empty when I left the track, but what else is new when betting the ponies? 🤣

i'm 15 minutes south of saratoga. are you coming out this summer?

the track is like golf... a bad day there is still better than a good day most anywhere else.

Not this summer. Greece in July is our summer vacation, then moving our daughter to college in mid August.
Been a few years since we’ve been out that way— no plans for summer of ‘26 as of yet…
Agree about the track or golf course… shot 87—-anything under 90 is a good score for me—-this morning in 25 MPH+ winds.. game is coming around and it’s only mid-May 👍

Greece should be amazing!

I shot 90 one time. Never came close since.

Gonna be hotter than Hades, but that time is what fits in the family schedule this summer, so off we go. Splitting our 10 days between Athens and Naxos, so the time on the island and it’s beaches and a steady breeze should make for a relaxing time after going hard to see all the historical sites in and around Athens.
Since I’ve backed off to part time work in ‘23, my game has slowly improved as I’ve played more than I have in a long time. Before marriage and kids, I would routinely break 80. Can I get there again? Doubt it— but playing from the old man tees now as a 60 year old sure helps the scores 🤣
