Flyers hoping to kick off 'Beat Tampa Weekend' By EDWARD MORAN

Of course, this is all just a big coincidence, but the fact the Flyers host the Tampa Bay Lightning today, a day before the Eagles face the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game, was not lost on Ken Hitchcock.

"It's funny," the Flyers' coach said. "Someone told me that the Sixers were playing the Bucks, and we play Tampa Bay, and the Buccaneers are here. Holy Bucs. It's kind of interesting."

The Flyers are coming off a win over Montreal on Thursday night that helped the Flyers regain first place in the Atlantic Division after letting it slip to New Jersey by losing to Atlanta. Hitchcock wants to see his team get Philadelphia rolling in the right direction.

No pressure, no superstition or anything like that, Hitchcock just wants to see the teams win, especially for the way the city has embraced the Eagles on their road to the Super Bowl.

"I'm so awestuck with what is going on here," he said, "just with the whole atmosphere. Having spent that time in Dallas, it's not near as emotionally connected as it is here. This is just unbelievable.

"The whole experience of watching a city get so into an athletic event. It's pretty neat to observe, because we're able to stand back and watch. We're fans of the Eagles, too, but we're also able to stand back and see what they're going through.

"Some of us have been in this atmosphere before, and it's really intriguing. And what's more intriguing is watching the city get so connected."

Hitchcock and a few Flyers have experienced a championship run, but far more of them have not, and he hopes the excitement generated by the Eagles will help fuel the Flyers.

"Any time one of the four major sports has success in your city, the residual effect is terrific," he said. "There's an emotional high that I've seen a lot of teams feed off of."

This is a pretty good time for the Flyers to feed on energy. The loss Monday to Atlanta is their only one in the last eight games.

They have nearly 2 more weeks and seven tough games before the All-Star break, beginning today against Tampa, a team that played hot through the first quarter of the season, then trailed off. The Lightning has been up and down lately, but in Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards, it has the players to score, and in Nikolai Khabibulin, it has someone to stop the puck.

The Flyers travel to New York tomorrow to face the Rangers and Eric Lindros, then visit the always-difficult Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

To their credit, some Flyers in the locker room yesterday were focused on their own game, and were surprised when they were reminded of the Tampa connection.

"Tampa Bay is a good team and we have to be ready to play them," Chris Therien said. "We can't be thinking about the Eagles. That's not our focus now.

"We could be playing one of 30 teams in the league, and this [opponent] just happens to be Tampa Bay. It is weird, but you know, we can't be looking at it like some kind of a godsend. That's just the way the schedule fell. But it is kind of neat."

When told about the matchup, Mark Recchi was surprised.

"Oh, yeah," he said. "I didn't even think about that. Hopefully, we'll have two Philly wins."

Jeremy Roenick, who never misses anything going on in the public eye, jumped right on board with the Tampa matchup talk.

"It is kind of ironic, isn't it?" Roenick noted. "There should be a lot of Tampa Bay fans making the trip up, if they're brave enough to test the waters. But, so far so good. Every time we've won, the Eagles have won."

Asked for a football prediction, Roenick replied, "17-10, Eagles."

And in case no one knew, Ther-ien is very good at picking football games. His prediction: "Eagles will win the game, 28-14."

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (18-17-6-4) AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (24-11-8-1), 7 P.M.

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Lightning hope to squash a four-game winless streak tonight when they head to Philadelphia to face off with the Flyers at the First Union Center.

Tampa Bay suffered its latest setback on Friday when it fell 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning got goals from Vincent Lecavalier and Andre Roy, but fell to 0-2-1-1 in their last four. John Grahame stopped 18 shots in the loss.

Things do not seem to be getting any better for Tampa Bay, which is 1-12-6 at Philadelphia in the regular season and is winless in its past 12 trips. The lone Lightning victory came January 9, 1997. Tampa Bay is winless in its past six games against the Flyers.

The Lightning are also 0-4-1-1 in the second half of back-to-back games this season and just 1-8-2-1 in their past 12 road games. For the season the Lightning are 6-11-4-2 on opposition ice.

To make matters worse for Tampa, All-Star goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin is expected back in the crease for the Bolts tonight, but is just 1-8 lifetime against the team from the City of Brotherly Love.

Tampa's loss on Friday also dropped it out of the Eastern Conference's top eight and with another loss today, the Lightning would fall to .500 for the first time all season.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, comes into Saturday's contest on the heels of a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. Michal Handzus had a goal and an assist to lead the Flyers, who are 5-2-1 in their last eight at home.

Joe Sacco scored his first goal in a Philadelphia sweater and Jim Vandermeer posted his initial NHL tally, as the Flyers earned their seventh triumph in eight games. Chris Therien added an empty-netter and Roman Cechmanek made 16 saves in the win.

Cechmanek needs just one win to reach 76 as a Flyer to tie Doug Favell for seventh place on the Flyers all-time win list.

Other players approaching milestones include Michal Handzus, who needs two assists to reach 100 in the NHL and Mark Recchi, who is two goals shy of 200 as a Flyer (12th player in team history to reach mark).

The Flyers, who trail the New Jersey Devils by a point in the Atlantic Division, will start a two-game road trip in New York against the Rangers on Sunday.

Philadelphia is 11-5-5-1 on its ice this season.

Brad Richards, Tampa Bay Lightning - Richards missed Friday's contest against the Penguins as he travelled to Prince Edward Island to be with his sick grandmother.

Dan Boyle, Tampa Bay Lightning - Boyle returned to the lineup on Friday, after missing four games with a dislocated index finger. His finger was heavily taped and Boyle was pretty ineffective for much of the game.

Nikolai Khabibulin, Tampa Bay Lightning - Khabibulin will be the starter for Saturday's game against the Flyers, reports the Tampa Tribune.

January 17, 2003 TIME: Saturday, 5 p.m. EST.
GAME: Tampa Bay Lightning (18-17-6-4) at Philadelphia Flyers (24-11-8-1).

The surging Philadelphia Flyers added a gritty veteran to their lineup in Joe Sacco. He immediately showed his worth.

Sacco looks to continue making offensive contributions as the Flyers take on the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning in the finale of a four-game homestand.

Playing in his first game for Philadelphia on Thursday, Sacco, a 12-year veteran, scored the tiebreaker early in the third period, helping Philadelphia beat Montreal 4-1. The Flyers have won six of seven.

``I'm just trying to fit in any way I can and work hard and be successful in the system that they play here,'' said Sacco, who was signed Wednesday to a free-agent contract. ``I'm here to play good defensive hockey. ... My offensive numbers aren't what kept me in the league this long.''

Sacco, who has 94 goals in 705 career NHL games, didn't notch a goal and had seven assists in 65 games with Washington last season.

He played in just six games with the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL affiliate, before being promoted to the Flyers.

``Sacco is a pro,'' Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said. ``He does little things that at the end of the night add up. Little plays on the wall, positional plays, the game's on the line. He doesn't get caught chasing in.''

Tampa Bay has lost six of eight (1-5-1-1), including Friday's 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Andre Roy and Vincent Lecavalier scored for the Lightning, who were coming off Tuesday's 7-0 loss at Ottawa.

Roy's second-period goal snapped Tampa Bay's goal-scoring drought at 108 minutes, 24 seconds.

John Grahame, acquired from Boston on Jan. 13, made his first start for the Lightning. Tampa Bay rested All-Star goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, who is 1-3-1 with an .880 save percentage over his last five games.
