Little landscaping help....

I am not go in the geometry area, so may be you all can help me.

I am going to construct a pation coming off of my deck, but I would like the patio on in a Octagon shape, how do I figure out the area within the octagon to purchase the bricks... DUmb huh? LMAO!!

From the center of the octagon to the middle of each parallel line is 7 feet, making it 14 feet wide. Bue ow do I figure out how long each parallel line should be?

you need to provide better info about the dimensions my friend:

N = # of sides
and
S = length from center to a corner (not the middle of the side)

Area of the octogan:
(1/2) N sin(360?/N) S^2

(.5)*8 sin (360/8)*S^2

4 sin 45 *(S^2)

3.4 * S^2
= area

my math is shaky, been a while since i had to do this off the cuff... i would double check it with a calculator man.

171 sq. ft. is a rough estimate, maybe someone can double check my math.

most brick masons will order 5-8% overage for cuts particularly where an octagon is being designed. Plan for a square that would just cover the octagon and you should be fine...

you can always use a few extra bricks around the house when your bets fall thru..

Jacks suggestion is the best (not to mention the way a lazy ass such as myself would go about it)..... but if you want to take the simple way about being precise (without needing geometry recolection ) .... cut yourself a piece of paper 7x7 (and double results) or 14x14...... cut off the corners, place them together in a square, measure it, multiply out square footage, and subtract from 196 (or 98 if 7x7)

Wouldn't the area of a circle cover an equal size octagon w/alittle left over...pi r^2?

LMAO!! I was unable to see the replies in time due to T'Wolves game and then falling asleep...so my wife took it to school, and had the math teachers do it! LOL!
