have been spent here in Atmore, Alabama. I have been here since the start of April and outside of the casino (slots only) there is nothing to do here. I spend my day walking through forests with snakes (eastern diamondbacks, coral, copperheads and cottonmouths) everywhere, alligators, black widows and some type of monsterous pig that runs loose throughout the area. I work from five in the morning until seven at night, six days a week in 95 degree heat, as I swear I am working in the Congo. I am managing 180 employees, some are skilled such as CAT Operators, Excavators, and some are non-skilled laborers whom are employed as Flaggers, Oilers or Swampers. Managing these employees has become a 24 hour a day job, as I have been called by the police the last two saturday nights, the first one involved three drunken employees chasing each other at 2 in the morning with chain saws, and the second involved a employee whom was drunk and decided to break out his guitar and amp and serenade the Atmore community with his version of Purple Haze at four in the morning. There is one bar here in Atmore, the "Grey Goose" and I have cleaned out there supply of Jamesons and Guiness, as my lifeline to sanity. The question now becomes, will I be able to last until late September and not have a mental breakdown. I think the odds are 2/1 that I have a complete mental meltdown before. :00hour

I would say head down to Gulf Shores on the Florida panhandle, as I've heard it's a nice fun place for vacationers, but who knows what things are like there with this mess of an oil spill. Hang in there Capper, you'll make it through. I feel your pain. I spent about 8 months in a tiny east Texas town for work and the only think that kept me sane was the riverboat casinos in Shreveport about 40 mins away...

I visit gulf shores on a monthly basis since we have a condominium there. Was there last week, and saw no signs of oil on the beach.

Glad to hear that. I just know some girls I knew there in East Texas used to go to Gulf Shores once a year for vacation. Knowing them, fugered it had to be a good time over there. Is that true Cie? Anything to do down there? If so, it's not too far from Atmore.

Our place is in the Beach Club, which is about a mile down the road from Peninsula Golf Club

The beach is nice, there are two good golf courses and a good number of quality eateries in the Gulf Shores, Orange and Perdido area.

I am not sure about the nightlife, as I generally take it easy in the evenings while there since I am normally with my wife and 2 toddlers......

Just happy to hear the coast isn't all messed up over there. I expect that it will be if a solution
isn't figured out soon, but I hope not. I've been hearing that on the news that Florida is next in all this mess and soon it will be screwing up their tourism on the gulf coast if the spill reaches shore. I do hope for you and your family, Cie, that your neck of the woods stays untouched by all this.

South Louisiana is screwed. I try not to think about because it sucks that our wetlands will be polluted for the next half century, our sport fishing will die, and our commercial fsherman will struggle mightily.

As for out east, tar balls have washed ashore from Ft Morgan, AL, to Perdido, FL. Not too many, but still you have to think more are on the way. As of last week, 27 tarballs had washed up and been discovered on the 15 mile strip of beach that I mentioned. I didn't see any, but they are out there.....

35 days in and jindal`s still waiting for the feds to allow him to dredge up some natural barrier islands to keep the wetlands from being destroyed...and booms....he still hasn`t received them....they won`t give him the o.k...

they have to do "environmental studies"...i`m not kidding...that`s the excuse...he`s trying to save the environment....

something`s wrong here...do they want this to turn into a bigger tragedy than necessary to make a political point?....

i don`t know...i do know that jindahl is threatening to do it anyway...,stop the damage before it`s too late....and take whatever punishment is meted out afterward....

I will not get into it, but I was silly enough to think early on that O was just the man to be in charge for this disaster. Wrong again!

Hard to believe, but things actually got worse here in lovely Atmore, Alabama today. At six this morning, two local laborers that I hired to sit in lawn chairs for twelve hours a day to stop traffic when a machine needed to cross the road decided to have a battle royale in the street! These knuckleheads got into a brawl over stop sign paddles and it got ugly. The bigger guy was kicking the shit out of the little guy, so the little guy went to our service truck and took out a chain saw file and stab the big guy seven times. The big guy was taken to South Alabama Hospital and had six hours of surgery. I called the company lawyer and he is telling me that this is a Workmans Comp case and I need to report this to OSHA tomorrow morning because of the surgery and the arrest of the laborer.
