Louisiana officials are trying to decide what to do about a massive shopping spree by families on food stamps when a power outage lifted the caps on their spending cards.

Police were called to Walmart locations in Mansfield, La., and Springhill, La., on Saturday as shoppers cleaned out store shelves.

Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd said some customers were pushing more food than any household could store in a refrigerator and freezer.

"I saw people drag out eight to ten grocery carts," he said.

Lynd said customers were "not unruly." There were no fights or arrests made, but the scene was still chaotic, he said.

"It was definitely worse than Black Friday. It was worse than anything we had ever seen in this town," Lynd said of Springhill, which is near the border with Arkansas. "There was no food left on any of the shelves, and no meat left. The grocery part of Walmart was totally decimated."

He said one customer made about $700 in food purchases.

Lynd said that around 9 p.m. CT on Saturday, a Walmart employee made an announcement on the intercom saying that the computer system had been restored and card limits had returned. At that time, customers left shopping carts full of food in store aisles.

"At that point in time, they knew the jig was up and they couldn't purchase what they wanted to," Lynd said.

every fuck that went over their limit should be sent a bill.

isnt it a crime to keep money if a bank mistakenly puts it into your account?

how isnt this the same thing?

A huge problem I see here is that if Wal-Mart puts a stop to this and refuses to check these people out, all the sudden the headline reads "Wal-Mart refuses food to poverty stricken families. Small Louisiana town goes hungry."

It's like the headline from yesterday about the girl who got kicked off her team because she was at a party to DD (which, if you believe that, I have some oceanfront property in South Dakota I'd like to sell you). America turns everyone into a victim any chance they get because we have to have a front page story.

I don't blame Wal-Mart for deciding it's better to get robbed down to bare shelves than deal with negative publicity for turning down customers trying to feed families.

How did that teenage girl get a cop to vouch for her sobriety then?

How did these people know the caps had been lifted unless someone inside the "system" told them??

Let's say if you are allotted $500 a month- do you go to the store and buy $800 hoping the card lets you? Someone let the cat out of the bag.

It's an embarrassment to journalism and this countries appetite for tripe that these inconsequential stories from every little outpost from sea to shining sea are headlines.
I mean some girl gets kicked off a team... that's news? And these stories come out every damn week, same shit.
We all remember silly policies and unfair punishments from back when we were in school, but can you imagine if every one of these little ?controversies? had the potential to became national news?
And while it seems like these stories spur a discussion of justice and fairness, I worry that they further disillusion kids into thinking every bad thing that ever happens to them is deserving of a ?stop the presses? moment in the American spotlight.
We have way more important issues at hand, that this country and the media marginalize.

I'm not going to pretend like I know everything. Is there a chance she's telling the truth? Absolutely. I just think it's a load of crap. Kids aren't completely stupid. When they get caught, they know what they can say that might sound plausible, and you bet your ass they're going to say it.

If I'm underage and get caught at a party and I just showed up to, if I know I'm sober I would say that name thing. Hey, I'm being a stand up guy, here!! I'm the victim!!

If you knew enough to reference the story I would think you would know that little detail.

But its easier and more amusing to just go ahead and assume. Seems like you have this incident pegged from just reading the headline, so we can all just move on to the next tragedy/story about a victim right? Damn media.

The bigger problem in all of this is the computer failure brought to you by Xerox and the DARPA designed internet.

Arkansas Power has already been under attack

ATLANTA ? The federal authorities are investigating whether three recent attacks against the power grid in Arkansas are linked, and utility officials have asked residents to remain alert to the threat of more trouble.

We saw chaos in the Walmart when the EBT system took a dump. What could possibly go right when the grid goes down in Mid-November?

It's not like turning a light off and on or rebooting your computer

I have done restarts on SATCOMS. It's not that easy. Our stuff was of the utmost secrecy and security. On the Mock Battlefield, an assaulting force were not allowed to get within 100 feet of our equipment. To 'destroy' it, or take it offline, they were only allowed to throw chem lights at the generators to simulate grenades, only when a battlefield controller stipulated ******s is dead, systems offline, were we out of the game

However, being that the system was a Real Mission Critical Asset, we were never offline, and our teams never stopped working

In the average American household, there is no more than 3 days of rations

Same with Americas grocery stores.
What can go wrong with a 48+ hour Blackout ?

Too many things can go wrong

That wasn't the information I was admitting to not knowing, genius. It's obvious she was sober....this wouldn't be a story if she wasn't. Thanks for pointing out that someone claiming to be a DD was sober.

You know, I show up sober to parties I plan on getting wasted at all the time.

You need to go back to not pretending like you know everything.

My gut reaction to this story was good girl, wasnt so good. I like the DD story too. I dont buy it.

The school has a no tolerance for alcohol and drugs. You are at a party where they are at you get disciplined and the discipline goes up whether you were sober or not.

Obviously, good girl knows this and if she wanted to still be the DD she could have called that friend on her phone and had her waiting outside for a ride or called her when she arrived but never went into the party, which is against the rules.

I dont know if she was going to drink, hang out, or simply there to pick up her friend, neither does the school, but what the school does know is she was inside a party when police arrived violating their no tolerance rule.

Also, I agree how is this news, oh yeah I forgot cause they hired a lawyer to show their daughter to stand up for what is right. Against, a clear rule she violated.

On the other side on this one Poon.
