RedHawks
With the No. 4 total offense and the No. 2 total defense in the MAC, the secret to the RedHawks? success in the 2004 campaign has been their balance, but its been quarterback Josh Betts that has left the biggest impression on opposing teams.
The Junior pivot has amassed 2966 yards this year with a 62.3 completion percentage, has an impressive 19-11 touchdown-to-interception ratio and has made Miami the No. 3 passing team in the MAC. The Vandalia native has really stepped up his game as the season?s winded down averaging 284 yards through his last three contests.
With a victory over Akron last Sunday, Miami secured its second-straight MAC East Division Championship. The Redhawks have a 7-1 conference record, won their last six contests and have a 3-1-1 record against the number in their last five.
Rockets
The No. 2 passing attack and the No. 3 three rushing game in the MAC have made the Toledo?s offense one of the most balanced in the nation.
Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski has been prolific this season totaling 3224 yards through the air, recorded an intimidating 70.5 completion percentage and has thrown 23 touchdowns compared to just 7 interceptions. His lowest single-game passing total this season was 202 in the Rockets opener against Minnesota.
On the ground, UT has had the benefit of three able rushers in running backs Scooter McDougle, Quinton Broussard and Trinity Dawson. McDougle leads the three with 453 while Broussard and Dawson have 369 and 346 respectively.
Toledo also has a decent defense to go with their lethal attack. The Rockets ?D? has given up a moderate 30.7 points per game to date. The unit has faired well against the run allowing under 147 yards on the ground per game, but has struggled against the pass giving up nearly 276 yards though the air per contest, good for second-to-last in the MAC.
The Rockets have beat nationally-ranked teams straight up in their last two contests. Their last win, a dramatic come-from-behind win over Bowling Green, earned them the MAC West Division title and their backers their seventh payday in Toledo?s last nine games
Covers.com?s take:
When these teams last met on November 2 in Oxford, Miami downed Toledo 23-16 as six-point favorites. Gradkowski managed 203 passing yards while McDougle, Trinity and Kenny Higgins accounted for most of the 177 gained on the ground.
However, their efforts were negated by the four turnovers the Rockets offense committed, which the RedHawks converted into 17 points.
Since their meeting in Oxford a month ago, Toledo has beaten two nationally-ranked teams in Northern Illinois and Bowling Green. Miami has also done well in flogging Western Michigan 42-21 and beating Akron 37-27, but when the teams meet in Detroit Tuesday, it?ll be the Rockets that?ll have momentum on their side.
After trailing 27-7 to the Falcons at halftime last Tuesday, the Rockets scored 35 straight points and six second-half touchdowns and held on for a 49-41 win as 5 ? -point dogs to claim the MAC West crown.
After turning over the pigskin four times to the ?Hawks in Week 11, Toledo will be much more wary of Miami?s defense and may not need the two points oddmakers are giving them to get to the pay window.
