MAC Strengthens Fighting Policy
Minimum Two-Game Suspension For First Incident
Feb. 14, 2003
CLEVELAND - Mid-American Conference Commissioner Rick Chryst announced today that, following a review of Tuesday night's Toledo vs. Bowling Green men's basketball contest, subsequent fighting ejections of team personnel from any Mid-American Conference institution during the balance of the 2002-03 men's basketball season shall result in a mandatory multiple-game suspension of the involved individual(s).
NCAA basketball playing rules stipulate that the minimum first-time penalty for fighting is a one-game suspension, although conference offices are permitted to make that penalty more severe. Under this policy, a first-time fighting penalty will now result in a minimum two-game suspension. A second fighting ejection suspends the participating individual for the remainder of the season, including tournament games.
"Everyone involved regrets the situation that occurred in the second half of the Toledo-Bowling Green game, but that doesn't excuse the conduct that took place," said Chryst. "I believe a series of events on the play in question, all of them preventable, escalated the situation and directly led to the ultimate ejection of the Toledo student-athlete, which was warranted and justified.
"Both Coach Joplin and Coach Dakich acted quickly to assist our game officials in restoring order, and I appreciate their leadership both that night and subsequently in communicating to their teams the unacceptability of this type of behavior.
"This is a rare incident for this conference, but one we simply cannot ignore. Administrators, game officials, coaches and players are all accountable to manage a highly-competitive environment in a pro-active, sportsmanlike and safe manner. We must make every effort to insure that this occurs on every night."

What this article neglects to mention is that Milo Kirsch (bench player) will be suspended. He`s actually a big key to the team because all of the Toledo "big men" suck and get into foul trouble fast...
