Northern Illinois +11: The Huskies have been on fire lately winning 7 of their last 8 games. Nowo they must make the 12 hour drive to Kent, Ohio and face Antonio Gates in the MAC Center....not easy :nono:. I was at Damons Bar and Grill tonight making the lines and I had Kent favored by 5. To my surprise, I see them laying 11 points to a team like the Huskies. Kent St seems to be rolling in the good times but in any case and seems to be the early favorite to win the MAC Tourney. But lets breakdown the BG/Kent game....particularly the last 2 minutes. BG was within 1 point and made great defensive stops...but blown chances and lack of experience from teh BG guards killed the Falcons....open lay-ups and open 3 pointers all rimming out and even missing second chance points. My point is this, when Kent plays a team that is known for their defense more then anything...well they seem to struggle - but pull away in the end. The Huskies lead by PJ Smith, is known for a hardnose defense and tough aggressive play. The reason I like NIU so much is because of their perimeter defense. Eric Haut believe it or not is not getting the respect he deserves. If not for him, Kent coulda lost to Toledo and Western Michigan....who is he you ask? He is shooting guard that can hit 3 pointers...like upside down if he wanted to. Teams worry about Gerwig posting up that the double team is slow getting there and slow getting back. Gerwig dishes out to Haut...and swish for 3. NIUs perimeter defense is awesome. They keep opponets in that 60 point range better then anybody in the MAC(besides Miami). PJ Smith and Marcus Smallwood will get their points and rebounds....but the match-up that I like is Eugene Bates against Eric Haut. Bates has shutdown the likes of Chris Williams and Nick Moore. He plays in your face defense and will give you a bad look at a 3....thats the match-up that I think that`ll keep the Huskies close but lose a heartbreaker.
Toledo -1.5: Iam going to this game cuz I dont have anything else better to do at 7 pm on Saturday
. I guess the team had a meeting and basically said, they need to start winning some ball games. Perhaps this meeting will do the trick for the Rockets. I like the match-up here very very much. Markus Austin and Nick Moore is gonna be a hell of a shootout. Both have nice touch on their shot and both are quick as hell. Iam worried about Ryan Prillman though....I dont think anybody on the Rockets can handle him, however, Prillman isnt the type of player that can carry a team like Kaman can or Hunter or even Chris Williams can. Eastern Michigan is a terrible free throw shooting team and the last 2 games that have been on TV, you can see that they play alot of man cuz they get burned playing zone. They are slowwww. Toledo does better against teams who run man because Toledo runs a type of fast tempo drive in the lane type of offense. Look for Boo Jackson to get into foul trouble too. HE has gotten beat on the base line almost everytime I have watched him this year. Toledo by double digits...
Marshall -4.5: Generous line...again. This will be the 3rd time Ive said this now...BG DOES NOT HAVE THE DEPTH OR THE GUARDS TO WIN ANY MORE GAMES. All injuried!! A.W. Hamilton and Ronald Blackshear against....who?? Cole Magner??? Dakich had to get him from the football team cuz he was so thin in depth. Jabari Mattox???? What has he done this season??? NOTHING! Kevin Netter will have his way in the paint though...but I expect that. Marshall will run these guys up and down the court...BG will not be able to control the tempo....nor will BG be able to stay with Marshall here.
