very big play for me. grabbing this overnight because im not sure a 2 will be around on wednesday. then again, mac line moves are always weird so who knows.

eastern michigan eagles (-2)

approaching this one from a couple of angles.

im not sold on bowling green this year as a frontrunner in the mac west. gotta give credit where its due -- theyre playing really well right now. and there have been a couple of times where ive kinda forced a play against them whereas in hindsight, i should have just waited for conference play to roll around and find better spots to go against bowling green.

this is one of those times.

this is probably eastern's best team since the earl boykins emu squad that made the tourney. its been awhile since this program has been good. but theyve got a nice team this year. lots of experience and a lot of size.

last time out, they played on the road and went to the line an absolutely obscene 60 times. they were 41-60 from the stripe.

the crazy thing is, that game wasnt an anomaly. i swear eastern michigan goes to the line more than any team i can remember. obviously the officials are liberal with the whistle in their games, but they do pound it inside and draw a lot of fouls the old fashioned way.

im an almost duke blue devil-esque fashion, theyve made more free throws this year than their opposition has even attempted. and theyre also converting them at a 71% clip.

in 13 games:

emu 279-395 from the line (avg of 30 attempts gm)
opponents have attempted 260 (20 attempts gm)

other things that favor emu:

* both teams have a lot of veterans and emu has held serve on their home court, winning the last two in ypsilanti.

* bowling green has played five games away from home this year. only one of those 5 had a winning record (depaul 9-4). the other 4 were youngstown state (3-11), detroit (5-8), oakland (3-10, and bg lost that one), and marshall (3-10). i think thats why when you read dakich's press conference quotes, you can tell hes trying not to get too excited because he knows they are going to be facing a lot stiffer competition in the coming weeks.

more on this one in a bit.

Yep, I love it. I was just going to start a thread on this one when I saw that G beat me to it, and since I regard Gman as the most eloquent of authors here at MJ's I will gladly step aside and just toss a couple of thoughts right here.

EMU is seemingly getting better each and every week. Their nearly impossible comeback at kent last week was amazing. They could have easily folded and jumped on the bus but they came from way back in the 2nd half and fell just a 3 pointer short at one of the toughest venues in the MAC.

I really don't see a quality win On BG's schedule all season. They caught a decent UIC at home just two days after the Flames lost that heart breaker to Ga. Tech, and beat Buffalo as well at home. That is it. As G mentioned on the road they have not played anybody of substance and dropped a 20+ point decision at Oakland. The same Oakland team that Akron pasted by 30 points. My only concern in this one is my respect for Dakich, he usually has his boys ready to play. but just feel that he's over matched here.

My record here has slipped to 19-14 over the past couple of weeks so I need this one pretty bad.

EMU -2 BIG

Playing WMU -3 as well. Bronc's own the second longest home winning streak in NCAA hoops, think they can cover this small number. I also like Akron a bit but need another point or two before I'l bite. the Zips played very well at Western last Saturday, when they came from 13 down at the half to actually take a 5 point lead before falling short. I think it was a game that the Zips can build off of.

hey nice post gman and spang, been following you two for a while, and although I don't always follow, I never go against you. If you haven't already, take a look at my S. Carolina post, let me know what you guys think. I'm thinking of pounding that game. Thanx in advance.

I just wanted to drop you a line and say that I always come here to look for your posts. Keep up the good work although I missed Clev St. i'm not surprised you found another winner. I post my NBA plays at another forum and cap a couple other sports pretty well but i'm unable to post them for one reason or another. I would love to be able to give back a winner or two to you one day. Later Gman2.

hawkeye - perhaps spang and some other mac guys can offer their thoughts on akron/buffalo and kent/wmu. heres what i see in those games.

* akron has played pretty well in two games since wood went down with the acl injury. final scores were toledo by 11 and western michigan by 9, but akron was within striking distance of toledo pretty much the entire 2nd half (down by 1 with 12:00 left before toledo stretched it out) and then were actually in the lead against western by 3 points with 9:00 left. thats encouraging.

* buffalo did take both meetings last year (by 6 in buffalo and by 8 in akron)

* i can assure you that this game is going to skyrocket over the total simply because of some gambling variation of murphys law. after having the over 149 in buffalo's last game vs toledo and having the final end up 56-54 in a game where both teams were godawful for long stretches, theres no doubt that this game will top 150 points and bust the total 'a day late'.

* as for kent/wmu, obviously its a rematch from the mac championship game last year. wmu won that game by 11. kent did, however, take the regular season meeting in kent.

* wmu a damn tough place to play. while i think kent is the most difficult mac venue to win at, wmich actually holds the 2nd longest home winning streak in the nation right now (23 games).

* both teams are playing excellent basketball right now. wmich has won 10 of 11 (dropping one to southern cal out in LA last month, so not a bad loss), whereas kent has won 9 of 11 with road losses to ball state and boston college along the way.

* while kent normally is the team at the end of the season that leads the mac in defense, right now its wmu who is locking teams down (opponents hitting just 40.7% of their shots. kents D allowing 43.3%)

* both teams have guys that can really shoot it. both average 8 three-pt makes per game, which is a pretty high number.

* reed for wmich has really stepped up and taken over the role that williams had for them last year. hes averaging over 18 ppg right now.

* kent is more balanced and dont have one scorer they rely on, although their transfer (warzynski) has really been playing well for them. hes a big guy that can play on the perimeter and if im not mistaken, against emich he had 3 or 4 threes.

* overall just a damn tough game. wmich is damn near unbeatable at home. kent, though, is the one mac team who has made their mark by showing an ability to win on the road over the years. i think this is gonna be an awesome basketball game that will be decided by 5 or less and the cover will flip flop back and forth.

Any thoughts on George Mason tonight vs. Delaware? The hens are terrible---I am thinking GM -2.5.

Thanks

spalding:

i pride myself on having some type of knowledge on every conference in division I.

unfortunately, i know dick about the colonial so my opinion would be useless.

i do, however, know that toledo ripped delaware a new ass in puerto rico in a game that was never close. that was not a particularly good holiday tourney for the hens.

theres a handful of guys here who could offer a more cogent opinion for one side or another im sure.

sorry.

BG is the best team in the nation against the spread...8-0. Does this scare you at all or does that give us even more line value w/ Eastern Michigan???
