Macao surpasses Las Vegas as gambling centre

SHANGHAI, Jan. 23 ? Macao surpassed the Las Vegas Strip to become the world?s biggest gambling center in 2006, measured by total gambling revenue, according to industry analysts and government figures released today.

In the eight years since Macao, a former Portuguese colony on the coast near Hong Kong, was returned to Chinese control in 1999, it has experienced a huge boom in casino investment, and millions of mainland Chinese have been flooding into the tiny island territory to gamble.

I invested in LVS back when it was in it's low 40' and sold at mid 60's. Now 100+, should have held.

Was there twice in the early 90's. took hydrofoil from Hong Kong. First time with wife, toured city, highlite was a burned out cathederal from hundreds of years ago.
Power was so expensive, everytime we went into a ma + pa curiosity shop, they would turn the shop and show case lites on, and we left they would quickly pull the plug. Played a few slots (Hungry Tigers) to the locals, local currency was "Pataca." In front of casino, remember 1 or 2 at that time, was a Grand Prix road track.

Went there again a couple years later with a bud who had never been on a hydrofoil, we had shorts on could not enter casino (Dress code). We ended up going to the Jai Lai arena and got sh*tfaced on cold TsingTao beer waiting for the Hydrofoil back....

Never been there, but it sounds very interesting. I've heard it is a GREAT time.

I dated someone for about 10 months in 2005 who was born in Macau.

Depending when you were born there, you have citizenship in China, and Portugal (which of course means freedom to work and travel in basically all of Europe/EU).

It was really weird seeing the most asian person you can imagine carrying a Portuguese passport.
