I have read a lot of reviews about how it is a scam. I would stay away unless you can confirm some friends that use it and it works great.

I have one and it's worked out OK. One 'problem' is the assigned phone number given you. They only have three or so prefixes for the state of Ohio. I had to use a Toledo (913) prefix as they don't have one for my area. Result = everyone that's local has to dial long distance to call me (which ain't all bad sometimes).

Also, be aware what operating systems will support magic jack (says which ones on their site).

I have one and have the same local phone number problem, but for 1.70 a month, it's hard to pass up.

There was a Bowl game this year early called the MagicJack Bowl, think it was in Florida.

I've had a MJ for almost a year no problems at all. Keep in mind you need a live internet connection to use MJ. MJ plugs into a port on the computer and you can stat calling anywhere in the US for free. Easy to install as the website advertises.

On the flip side if someone calls you from out of the area you set-up then they are charged LD. You can choose your area code in any state when you sign-up or if you one is available from your area you can choose that.

I signed up for the 3 year plan, $2.00 a month for 3 years......... No complaints :toast:

I have a desktop that is downstairs that I never really use. It is the machine I have my wireless router running through. I rarely leave the computer on, but I assume I could just leave it on and connect the MJ there.

Like you said $2/month is hard to pass up, especially when i am paying $30 to go through cable and our home phone rings about 10/month (from people we actually want to talk with).


According to their site, they are hopeful that they will be able to transfer numbers. I may wait and then transfer my home phone. As little as people call it, it is still the main number we put on doctor forms and other places that require a phone #

Its the landline of the future! Why pay for a phone if your paying for the internet?

BTW MJ has all the extra's you pay for on your phone now like Caller Id Call waiting and if your computer is off when you plug MJ in all incoming calls are in your e-mail.......

Only problem I see is if the internet connection becomes a problem.....IP has technical issues or in the case such as cable...if a pole gets knocked down or out due to accident, your screwed until they fix it....but I guess we could also say that about hardwired phones systems as well. The cable service provider in my area is Cumcast and the customer service is terrible as well.

I've had it almost a year now. I use it only for long distance calls ...no problem. A friend of mine got one and used it constantly...after a couple of months he complained about echoing in his transmissions but received ok.

Get OOMA, it is so much better. I had magicjack and the quality varied from call to call and you had to have your computer on for it work.

OOMA sounds as good as a landline and after the initial purchase price is free for all USA calls and no monthly charge. Also, they will port you current phone number, device acts as an answering machine as well. Also, will forward your voice mail to email. Works directly with your internet connection so you don't even need a computer.

I have cancelled my landline after testing for a couple of weeks.

Not sure what you are saying. They have a free version and then if you want even more bells and whistles, second line, forward ring to any number etc....they have a premium package.

I don't need the extra line, etc....so there is no additional charges, ever.
